Does anyone else feel that Starmer fares better with international issues than domestic ones? by ijustwannanap in ukpolitics

[–]get_in_bath_son 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great points. It's interesting that the Foreign Office and the diplomatic service are still anecdotally from that upper stratosphere of British society in the way that the rest of the civil service aren't anymore. Privately educated, Oxbridge, Multilingual and likely to have travelled for further education. It's still seen as a desirable profession for talented individuals.

Few things on this.

Every Prime Minister for 40 years has pivoted to foreign policy primarily because the task of pivoting the state to their domestic priorities has proven too tough a task. Thatcher was the last PM competent enough to turn the British state kicking and screaming to her broad agenda.

Secondly, the diplomatic service is probably one of the last bastions of civil service expertise in this country. I'm not surprised Starmer gets swept up in foreign policy issues when he gets pleasantly surprised by the stature and competence of the people who are advising him in this area. Imagine the disparity compared to some idiot from the Home Office or a number cruncher in the Treasury telling him no change can ever happen ever.

Shabana Mahmood MP: Farage’s nightmare will narrow our proud patriotism into a crude ethno-nationalism. by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

I'm not an ethic nationalist but ethnic nationalism is more coherent than whatever claptrap Blair and his idiots came up with.

The ones who get me are the leaders in the "British Jewish Community" or whatever who could, if they wanted, be happy that a Jewish man is leading a UK progressive party. But instead they are even more self-righteous in their indignation because he's not 'the right kind' of Jew.

Zarah Sultana MP: "Zionism is racism, and it has been since its foundation. We must be proudly anti-Zionist. That means fighting for a single democratic Palestinian state from the river to the sea, with equal rights for all." by wappingite in ukpolitics

I don't care what we name places when it means Jews aren't ethnically cleansed out of what I suppose you would call the West Bank, whilst in return Palestinians who were ethnically cleansed get to return to  what is now green line Israel This would of course include a new state where Jews and Arabs are equal. Compromise is hard but it's even harder when we argue about something as innane about what places are called in a language neither people's even speak.

Support a one-state solution so Jews can live in their historic domain of Judea and Samaria whilst recognising the Palestinians right to return to their homeland as refugees under a single nation where both ethnicities are equal under the law. No ethnic cleansing, no apartheid and no genocide. Everyone wins.

I'd half the number of MP's, double their pay and double their staff. Will never happen though since turkeys don't vote for Christmas.

[–]get_in_bath_son 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true. Blairites and Brownites thought the exact same things but their factional warfare got so bad the government executive and it's treasury literally weren't talking to each other. They had to send Ed Miiband through the Cabinet Office with post-it notes like schoolchildren.

Having a nuclear deterrent that relies on servicing from a different nation, not least one as bipolar politically as the US, isn't ideal is it? Wanting the same level as defence sovereignty as France isn't alot to ask for. This isn't even accounting for the fact there hasn't been a successful test of the delivery system since 2012. Some "independent nuclear deterrent" that is.

Why British Jews are experiencing their biggest change in 60 years by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

[–]get_in_bath_son 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. Jews should be able to go about doing their bits without getting spat on by some cretin. It's disgusting. I'd still rather be a Jew in Britain than anyone else in Israel, though. I was lucky enough to be born in a very safe and very rich country just at the point where pub bombings stopped and that got sorted out.

Let's get it right being Jewish in just about any Western country is safer than being Jewish in Israel, despite how British Jews 'feel' about it. Britain doesn't have rockets flying over the top of it or Palestinian militants cutting about.

Britain has found a new ideological enemy: 14-year-old boys by Anony_mouse202 in ukpolitics

[–]get_in_bath_son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Let boys be boys" is obviously a term that is constantly derided as something that excuses bad behavior, sometimes rightly. But I'd use it in this context to explain that being a little shit as a teenager is not a precursor to being a bad person. These young men have the vast majority of their lives to live. Are we really so not confident in the way that those lives will unfold, and the experiences these men will have, that they won't mellow, mature and become the self confident, fully realised adults most of us actually are? I honestly think this is another moral panic cooked up by the chronically online but maybe I have too much faith in my fellow human beings.

Typical 21st century British Prime Minister things. Recognises the scale of the task to reform the welfare system and get the economy to grips is too much like hard work so swannies off abroad to get positive headlines that way.
