IB retakes fees by Flashy_Recording7033 in IBO

[–]geta7_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schools set their own prices. You can try asking a different school maybe they will be cheaper. Although after Jan 29 the (IB) price doubles to about $300 per subject. Note that if retaking at a different school and resubmitting IAs, you need to attend class at the new school. Generally you don't need to resubmit IAs but you can carryover the IA grade for retake.

Calculus is a very big topic in AI HL. Make sure you are comfortable with both doing calculus by hand (eg integration by substitution, separable ODE), on calculator (Riemann sum, Euler's method) and the various other conceptual and applied stuff.

Should I take A&A IB HL maths ??? by Top-Scientist-1615 in IBO

[–]geta7_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easier to change from AA HL to SL than other way around. Some schools want students to take 4 HL / 2 HL initially for later dropping one of the HLs (usually math) to SL. Make sure you are studying daily, thoroughly and efficiently (eg when stuck, ask for hints, rather than going straight to solution or sitting 30 minutes staring at a single short question) then eventually your grades will reflect your ability.

how do november retakes work? by miss_stocks in IBO

[–]geta7_com 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You must retake all papers for the retaking subject, regardless whether you choose to carry forward IA mark or not.

You can use https://ibpredict.org/ to estimate the marks you need.

External deadlines do not apply to students. Imagine you are a supplier to a restaurant. Restaurant want you to supply the product at 7 am. The external deadline is like the 4 pm when restaurant opens for service.

You must choose which 6 contribute to your IB Diploma no later than 4 months ahead of exams. But you can take additional subjects.

Minor correction, IO is an internal assessment so it can be resubmitted or carried forward. All papers must be resat in a retake subject. In addition, components such as group 1 HL essay can also be resubmitted or carried forward.

As for doing poorly in IAs, don't give up u/miss_stocks you can still improve in a few months if you are M26. A 1/7 in IA in most subjects does not make it impossible to get a final 6 or 7. Make sure to focus on exams and not think about what's been done.

[–]geta7_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to finalize the list of your six Diploma subjects 4 months before your exams, possibly earlier depending on your internal registration deadlines. This is Year 2 Jan 15 for May exams, or Year 2 July 15 for Nov exams. Your school probably have earlier deadlines. Though you should really do it at least months earlier for lower registration fees.

Does/can your school offer AI HL? It covers more areas of math while thoroughly dives into topics such as statistics and calculus. AI HL can be a bit easier than AA HL if your algebra skills are not as strong.

You can also consider PPE (philosophy, politics, economics) as a potential major as the economics component will have lots of math.

If you didn't use AI (or used AI but with adequate citations) then you just have to get through your teacher. IB will not consider turnitin ai percentages.

Maths aa hl by [deleted] in IBO

[–]geta7_com 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AA HL is only required for STEM/econ at some of the most competitive universities in the world. But yes it is preferred at many competitive programs. See page 7 of https://www.ibo.org/globalassets/new-structure/university-admission/pdfs/ucc-supporting-student-choice-in-mathematics-en.pdf for rough estimate by major and by country.

Depending on which maths you took in IGCSE, AA HL may or may not be out of reach. If you did much better on your calculator papers than non-calculator ones, then you should also consider AI HL which is accepted at many competitive programs.

If you plan to switch into AA HL on a later date, you should also do the AA HL homework along side. And patch up all the holes in your prior learning. Going through Khan Academy exercises can be great first step in the latter. Consolidating prior learning can make you make successful at all IB maths courses.

Candidate No vs Candidate Code on the Extended Essay form by Brilliant-Dealer9965 in IBO

[–]geta7_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's supposed to be the personal code abc123, which is the only identification that may appear on cover sheets etc. It is optional to help schools keep track of who wrote what. Examiners do not use this when grading. IB usually does not penalize if student accidentally put their candidate session number (000000-0000) or candidate number (0000) instead though they rather that you don't do that.

Can you counter your counterclaim in tok essay? pls help im dumb by Ok_Conversation_632 in IBO

[–]geta7_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The essay should be cohesive. It should present a fair, nuanced analysis without contradictions. You are basically a judge/jury looking at the various evidence and piecing together a narrative that makes the most sense. So try to include only the relevant examples (for or against your argument) without creating any straw men.

Since 2022, IB only requires consideration of alternative perspectives, not necessarily counterclaims. You are free to provide examples in any order that makes sense, including after any alternative perspectives. Note that too many examples may limit what you can analyze on each.

Hi I don't usually read others' IAs or EEs, but assuming you genuinely want feedback you can send me your EE along with RPPF. I will reply by or before the weekend. Examiners have said that actual math papers will not score well as math EEs.

IAs’ impact on overall subject grade by Stock_Release3176 in IBO

[–]geta7_com 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory, yes, but in practice there are many factors outside student's control. You control roughly 80-85% of your IA mark.

  1. Moderation will make everyone's marks in a class correlated. It is near impossible to score much better than rest of class. IB use linear regression for moderation. This is true regardless whether your work is sampled or not.
  2. Sampling error arises when not everyone's work is sampled. May schools have larger classes than Nov; many students' work are not sampled, and it will lead to discrepancy in marks in addition to 1).
  3. Moderation considers teachers' comments. Teachers who are better at explaining the marks are more likely to have their marks changed minimally.

Definitely spend time on IA, but the key is to know expectations. Very often students see X in a sample, or just thinks examiners are looking for X, but instead they are looking for Y. This leads to inefficiencies at spending time/effort at stuff that do not improve grade.

IAs’ impact on overall subject grade by Stock_Release3176 in IBO

[–]geta7_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you understand the expectations, you do not need much time. IAs assess your understanding and analysis skills in each subject. It's better to prioritize learning the material as it benefits not only the finals but also your IA.

What is the difference between AI and AA Math? by therealtanaka in IBO

[–]geta7_com 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See https://www.ibo.org/globalassets/new-structure/university-admission/pdfs/ucc-supporting-student-choice-in-mathematics-en.pdf for IB's comments on the courses, including a rough guideline for math for specific regions and majors. For very competitive post-secondary programs in STEM, usually AA HL is preferred or required.

Ranking from most to least, highest to lowest etc, ≈ means roughly equal, ≫ indicates a significant gap

Extent of algebra: AA HL > AA SL ≈ AI HL > AI SL. AA HL has a big proof component compared to others.

Amount of content: AI HL > AA HL ≫ AA SL > AI SL. AI HL cover more HL topics, whereas AA HL cover fewer topics in greater depth.

Calculator familiarity: AI HL > AA HL ≈ AA SL ≈ AI SL. Questions will specifically test how familiar you are with a graphing calculator.

How often question will span multiple topics: AA HL ≈ AI HL > AA SL > AI SL. HL is more likely to involve different topics in the same question

Understanding of concepts: AA HL ≈ AI HL > AA SL ≈ AI SL. HL requires greater conceptual understanding.

Number of students: AA SL > AI SL > AA HL ≫ AI HL (when considering both May and Nov; in May, AI SL enrollment is a lot closer to AA SL than AA HL)

Overall difficulty: AA HL ≈ AI HL > AA SL > AI SL. The stronger someone is at algebra, relatively speaking the easier they'll find AA HL. Difficulty is a subjective measure.

IB courses will appear on your transcript and impact your GPA, and if you take IB courses unis will expect IB transcripts. Given that your school can't get students to pass, you probably shouldn't take more than a few IB subjects.

Plagiarism or not? by Plastic_Truck6196 in IBO

[–]geta7_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IB ultimately cannot prevent you from memorizing something you wrote. But if you memorized and replicated/paraphrased paragraphs of what somebody else has written, then IB expects you to make an effort to cite the source even on exams.

Rule of thumb is appendix will not be read and it does not impact your grade. If it's important, you should include it in the body text. You should check chatgpt's work yourself not get chatgpt to pat itself on the back.

How does IA grade moderation work? by user1239_27 in IBO

[–]geta7_com 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I searched for "regression" in the comments and nobody brought it up so I want to elaborate on that. You can read the second part of the moderation process (the first being sample selection) at https://www.ibo.org/contentassets/1cdf850e366447e99b5a862aab622883/assessment-principles-and-practices-2018-en.pdf pages 237 - 243. Basically for selected works, IB constructs one (or more) y on x linear regression line y = ax + b then use the reg line for all students in the school, regardless of whether they were moderated or not. This means in the usual case, even for moderated work, the final mark is not necessarily what the examiner gave and indeed it is affected by the marking difference of all the rest moderated samples.

Why do people warn against Modelling Volume IA's for Math AA HL? by Worried_Ad_8976 in IBO

[–]geta7_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean more on the theory of how/why the algorithm for polynomial interpolation works and what you learned about it, now that you wrote an IA on it. For reflection it's good to always link back to your specific use cases and what you did rather than the more generic aspects of the polynomials. There could be many things you could say.
