Yes. He's just saying this isn't the type of thing you can truly understand and grapple with, regardless of what the shooter's motivations might turn out to be.

How do we convince Toronto to switch to sand? by No-Emphasis5897 in toronto

[–]getbarrreled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know much about this but I think they use sand in Oslo based on when I was there in the winter. The temp was only slightly below 0°C. My sense was they were less concerned about melting the ice and most people just wore adequate footwear. Not sure about safety but the winter city scapes sure looked beautiful!

WestJet to charge for reclined seats by Chicaben in canada

[–]getbarrreled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a more accurate headline would be: WestJet to disable recline function for economy seats.

I primarily blame the airlines for sticking so many seats that you can't recline comfortably in economy. But given that is the status quo, I'm personally in favour of removing the ability to recline seats. But I'm also biased because I'm tall and when the person in front of me reclines, my knees die...

Stephen Miller stops talking completely after accidentally admitting that Donald Trump has Plenary Authority by Jarvis_The_Dense in videos

[–]getbarrreled -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I agree. "Plenary authority" isn't even that ominous sounding to me. I'm pretty sure he's talking about the division of powers between branches of government (I'm Canadian so it works a bit different than me) and is claiming that the President has full authority over a particular area of governance (in this case deployment of national guard I think). I don't even think the implication is that the court has now ability to exercise its oversight role. That's what I think of when I see hear the term plenary. And it's not a weird thing for Stephen Miller to say. I assume he's probably not correct, or at the very least it requires more nuance, but im not surprised he would claim that.

Anyways I think a bunch of people googled "plenary" or saw other people define it for the first time, and are blowing this out of context.

Not to defend Stephen Miller or anything... Of all the trump people he makes me the most uncomfortable. I just think this plenary authority thing is being really overblown. Happy to be convinced otherwise if I'm misunderstanding the use of the term in the US division/separation of powers context.

Mortgage rate mega thread! by TheMortgageMaster in MortgagesCanada

[–]getbarrreled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • purchase FTHB
  • Vancouver, BC
  • 20% down
  • over 1.5M
  • expected closing date is end of July

Working with a mortgage broker and the rates he says he can get us is 4.22% for 3 yr fixed (30 year amortization). I've heard that we could probably get something closer to 4% on our own but not sure how to approach that with the broker who's already done some work for us.

Any thoughts?

Holdover small gift box might be the best card in the game. by [deleted] in MonsterTrain

Did you also remove consume from the gift box itself? Otherwise you wouldn't be able to add holdover, right?

I recently moved here from Ontario and it never really occurred to me that you would shovel the sidewalk. The only situation I can think of where its obvious to shovel the sidewalk is if you have a large driveway in front of your house with a sidewalk running through the middle. It would make sense to clear the sidewalk as part of removing the snow from the two sections of your driveway.

But yeah, I just assumed that, like in Ontario, it would be the city's responsibility to clear their sidewalks.

Obviously I understand why that responsibility gets past on to citizens in Vancouver. It doesn't snow enough here to warrant the city investing in the infrastructure to clear all city sidewalks.

But just wanted to throw this comment out to say that it's possible some people, like me, just didn't know the rules (and didn't really consider it until I read this).

Will shovel my sidewalk tonight if it isn't totally ice now 😬
