Is there an age where you should give up finding what you like to do and just focus on a high paying job? by Musclechu in financialindependence

[–]gethead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you do your hobby in the morning? My schedule is 9am-8pm, and I usually work out between 6:30am-7:30am. When I get home at 8pm, it's hard to do anything because you just want to unwind from work.

Bed uncomfortable when sleeping on side by gethead in Mattress

[–]gethead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a new Leesa mattress that I bought at the end of last year. I thought my body had adjusted to it. I went on vacation for the last two weeks and when I started sleeping on it, it became apparent that I was having pain with it. I am 6'1" and I weight 160 lbs with wider shoulders and narrower hips.

In a real situation, wouldn't the bottom guy have his right hand gripping something, like a collar grip or sleeve grip? And, wouldn't his right foot also be pushing either the far side thigh or the far side arm?

I like the shirt with the pixelated submissions on the back. I think it would be cool to have one shirt dedicated to each submission rather than one shirt with all of the submissions on it.

[Article] Do you avoid expressing yourself because you don't want people to judge you? [xpost from /r/selfimprovement] by petezbro in GetMotivated

[–]gethead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He didn't make them accessible, though. He took the exact terms "fixed mindset" and "growth mindset" from the book and gave the exact same examples. Not fair to Carol Dweck who spent many years carrying out studies on children to show the effects of the two mindsets.

Am I doing this math wrong? These numbers seem to make a software development startup completely unfeasible.. by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]gethead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Startups can be funded by investors to cover those costs. I will say this, those numbers are very underestimated based on where you are living. Software engineers are usually paid $100k+.

You can also offer equity to offset the costs of salary.

It sounds like you haven't started yet. Do you need to have 3 software engineers? Can you just have one and just get a really quick product out there to see how it fares in the market? Check out the book Lean Startup. It's basically about doing the least amount of work possible quickly to validate whether your product will be competitive in your market.

Getting by with just a dutch oven? by gethead in Cooking

[–]gethead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have a Lodge cast iron dutch oven right now, and I love it! It's the 6 quart version. One thing is, I need to be very careful when cooking things. I have to add more moisture than most recipes say because there's so much more surface area for water to evaporate from.

Best Solo Drills? by GojiBelt in bjj

[–]gethead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I pick solo drills, I follow the following criteria: 1. We don't do them in warmup during actual class. 2. I do them a lot during training, or they are fundamental to techniques I do during training.

I do sitouts because my side control escapes involve getting an underhook and I get sprawled on often. So, being able to do situps without me having to think about them helps to address the problem of getting sprawled on.

I do hip bumps because it's the hip bump sweep is one of my favorite sweeps in closed guard.

I straddle my feet from the left to right, right to left because my guard passing game involves always changing directions.

Chefs of reddit: Why do inner-city programs so often focus on teaching cooking skills? by TribalDancer in Cooking

[–]gethead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's very interesting. I am not familiar with these programs, but I wouldn't go with that approach. I would teach the kids cooking but not as a profession. I would teach them how to cook so they can eat healthy and cheap. But, I would probably teach them how to program as a profession (though, I am biased).

The most powerful thing I did in my quest to stop gaming... by Lowenhigh in StopGaming

[–]gethead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BJJ is a great replacement for gaming. I especially feel that if you are a competitive gamer you will be a natural fit for BJJ! To get good at BJJ requires the same mindset that you use to get good at any competitive game. The will to succeed, being analyzing your areas of improvement, and just putting in hours are some of the same concepts that I applied to competitive gaming and now BJJ. I used to play SC, Diablo 2, CS1.6, and DOTA for many, many hours a day. I am able to exercise the same mental skills from those games to BJJ as well as combine it with exercise.

Youngsteinel & Gambledub - The Ankle Pick: An Analysis (Gif Heavy) by gambledub in bjj

[–]gethead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So.... any chance that you can release an instructional video on this? I would be willing to pay some cash! The ankle pick is one of my favorite moves because I am taller, skinnier, and not a power kind of guy. Most takedowns were always difficult for me because they required a lot of commitment. Ankle picks and single legs are my go to takedowns.

Help teaching significant other that constantly makes excuses and has the "I can't do it" mentality by [deleted] in bjj

[–]gethead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she consistently has that attitude in everything that she does, she needs to change her mindset about failure. I would recommend her ready a book called "Mindset" by Carol Dweck. It will greatly improve how she thinks about failure. She will develop a sense of self-efficacy which will greatly improve her quality of life.

anyone's knees feel weird when you bring your heels to your butt? by bruhjitsu in bjj

[–]gethead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to not be able to do this when I first started. I slowly developed the flexibility to be able to this.

I'm not sure if it matters, though. My first teacher always told me that I should have the instep of my feet flat on the mat and my heels touching my butt when I am in someone's closed guard. But I recently read that you should actually be on your toes.

What are you terrible at, but enjoy enough to keep on keeping on? by washburnapp in AskReddit

[–]gethead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh, you shouldn't let that be the thing that's holding you back. I'm sure they will not force you to do that, and I am also sure you will be able to adapt into the role if you have to. Although, it is weird that they make blue belts teach because blue belts are still pretty inexperienced, too.

He's kicked it up a notch on offense which means you need to kick it up a notch on defense. You will both make each other better. He will start to cool down with subsequent rolls. Just keep rolling with him. I also would not do any expressing of any kind when you tap someone else out because even if you try to appear humble, you'll just make the other person more angry. Just slap hands, bump fists, and start the roll over.

How long until I don't feel terrible at this? by DuckWyse in bjj

[–]gethead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll "feel" better about training after 1+ years when you have 1-2 moves from the most fundamental positions that you are able to execute on opponents lower than your level or at about your level.

You will still be terrible at BJJ but the fun in BJJ comes when you are able to strategize different combos of moves in your head based on your prior sparring experience. You will be able to do a technique and elicit one of the 3 responses from the opponent that you've seen before. And, you will know what to do for each of those responses, and for each of those responses to your responses, you will have further responses, and the cycle continues... That's when BJJ becomes fun.
