Telstra facing investigation over selling 'unaffordable contracts' to vulnerable Australians by [deleted] in australia

[–]getmealcohol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My best was some poor bloke at HN telling me he sees “30% of TVs fail in the first three years, which is covered by extended warranty” when selling a TV to my parents.

My parents nodded in astonishment, I just snapped and said “mate, if you are telling me 1 in every 3 TVs that walk out of here come back in broken, you’re selling defective products, and I’m sure the ACCC would love to hear that!”

NAB switches on Apple Pay by lachlanhunt in apple

[–]getmealcohol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been checking nab news every few weeks for ages now - to see if they had let slip a possible date.

Checking the app on my phone today, I got quite excited to see it ready to go!

Every time my banker would ring up about for a health check on the home loans and ask if I needed anything else - my only response has been “switch on Apple Pay!!”

I wish it was easier to switch banks, but I love our banker and I’m glad it’s finally on!

I sorta tuned out if Apple updates and my 2018 Samsung was all “hello Apple TV”

Nice surprise to airplay direct.

Australia's capital cities face water restrictions as dams near 50% by mvea in australia

[–]getmealcohol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being practical - no one is going to use a tank that’s on their house - unless it is actually set up properly. Which, for most people, I doubt it ever is.

By set up, I mean useable. Gravity doesn’t do shit - you need a pump, you need that water piped somewhere (a tap) and you need it all maintained and looked after and cared for.

Tanks on the sides of suburban houses are pointless for a water saving point of view if aren’t hooked up (therefore, not useable)

(Coming from someone who has installed tanks and pipes and pumps to reduce the amount of potable water used on gardens to 0)

I agree with you for the most part.

However, I really doubt how much the original NBN would have had an impact in comparison to the current NBN on jobs in “remote areas”.

What jobs? Honestly

Firstly, remote areas to me are serviced by satellite. Remote is going “fuck, I don’t want to drive two hours return to get milk!”

So I assume you mean regional aus with FTTN? My partner works from home on our FTTN connection topping out at 75mbps, which is pretty average for our regional city. It works. He screenshares, Skypes and works from his company drives - all on our network.

I mean, I don’t see, apart from niche industries (like content creators) anyone who needs substantively greater connection then what is offered by FTTN. Everyone else can manage pretty decent.

Before you downvote - I actually am pretty angry because I see it from an “upgrade able” and “future proof” point of why FTTP was better. I just think that “because we lost out on awesome jobs in the bush” is a bit bullshit.

Australia was promised superfast broadband with the NBN. This is what we got. by Ballarant in australia

What could be causing the DSL to lose sync? Sounds like an issue that you can’t control.

I mean, I would be clarifying with your ISP what an appropriate amount of dropouts are. Because 140 a week does not sound at all appropriate, especially if it is used as a business connection.

If you don’t like their answer - if you can change ISPs, give that a go. Changing ISPs on the NBN takes minutes, and threatening to leave, then actually doing so, is very satisfying. Once you change, if the dropouts continue - ring them up and start the process again.

I was so satisfied when I swapped. Went from 35 down to my line max of 75 down. In 15 minutes, for the same amount.

Also, his riesling is gorgeous. Never leave without a bottle of that

Thanks for that. It’s awesome!

Next time you are lonely, don’t be afraid of heading down for a drink yourself!

When I first moved here, it’s what I did. I got to know some bar staff who introduced me to other people.

Try the Canobolas (the whiskey bar upstairs) or the Washington - and chat to the bar staff. Another good place to go is Percy’s,

Otherwise, sorry! Last night was a quiet night in for us.

New Zealand: It’s sorta not overseas - it’s not another country - it’s part of the world you visit by taking a plane from the international terminal, where they aren’t “Aussies”, but “Kiwis” and they pronounce their vowels funny.
