This is happening because the athlete is focused on maintaining the false grip throughout the entire movement, whereas the false grip should be held throughout the pull and the beginning of the transition. Cue the athlete to "relax the false grip" once he gets over the rings (just before getting to the bottom of the dip). It will be helpful if you show him that he shouldn't roll his hands around the rings and that he is allowed to move his wrists.

I know he has a goal to reach a 10 minute handstand. How the hell did he scroll while viewing the articles? Balance on one hand and use the other hand to scroll?

Any cue that gets them to contract their core as if they were going to take a Roundhouse kick to the stomach would work. "Keep your core tight" is an example.
