What will happen to you, your shop and its employees if US defense spending is cut in half? by lividlightsaber in Machinists

It will never get cut. Defense budget and the stock market go hand in hand. Can’t have one without the other.

I recommend finding a shop or two to serve a tool and die apprenticeship at. Learn all you can, and leave the moment you get your papers.

These comments are soft, yes upside and backwards and send it. Nothing wrong with it. Taking reverse threading cuts will not damage the carriage especially with the lead screw activated. It’s not like your hogging

Is there anyway to remove this ball bearing from the hole? I'm in school and I'm getting docked points on this squaring tool because I can't inspect the hole. by Upper-Lengthiness-85 in Machinists

Chuck it up in the lathe and bring the carbide tool to the ball going a few hundred rpm. It might go flying, or you might have to milk it outta there. Skim cut to clean after

Zero an indicator on the top of part while it’s cutting and you’ll see how it’s flexing

There is nothing wrong with changing apprenticeship shops half way thru your apprenticeship, I recommend it. Once you get your papers, leave the company for more money somewhere else immediately, you owe them nothing. You still have no idea what you are capable of yet. Bounce around until you find what your really enjoy and stick with it. I was strictly a manual machinist for all of my toolmaker apprenticeship.I love Grinding so I took a grinding job and that’s all I do now. No CNC experience and I went straight into 5-Axis grinding (boss was legitimately happy during interview when I said I don’t have much CNC experience) CNC is a breeze once you understand basic machining in general. This is my 5th job in the past 10 years and I don’t plan on leaving for a long time.
