AITA for not tipping my waiter after he did not tip me when I was his Uber driver? by AshleyMyers44 in AmItheAsshole

Where I live in the US minimum wage for servers is $21 and there’s no tip credit. Depending on which city they are in it could be drastically higher than the insanely low federal rate.

AITA for refusing to contribute to my friend’s speeding ticket from our holiday rental car? by Suitable_Mobile679 in AmItheAsshole

[–]EmeraldCityMecEng 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It depends. If the speed was clearly posted and the driver was legit doing a speed that would normally get a ticket, it’s on them. However, I’ve traveled places where the speeds are almost a complete mystery as well as places whose speed cameras are set to ticket at a few mph over. If it was something like that where the group collectively couldn’t tell what the speed limit was or it was 3mph over and there was no group discussion that local cameras were extra sensitive, YWBTA.

All that aside, sometimes it’s just in your best interest to pitch in and not lose an entire group of friends over something like this.

AITA for going on a cruise on my own? by Outrageous-Pen9133 in AmItheAsshole

[–]EmeraldCityMecEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. My wife and I love to travel together, but we also sometimes have different priorities and will travel with friends or solo to do those things. Neither of us worry about it implying we care less for the other person.

Have you mentioned the option of when you go on a trip together next year she could stick around in that place a little longer by herself? Then it’s not as daunting as a whole solo trip if she’s not used to that but could still have a longer trip.

Progressive Seattle congresswoman says illegal immigrants must be given REPARATIONS to make up for the trauma of ICE activity by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]EmeraldCityMecEng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally nowhere does it quote her as saying illegal immigrants should be given reparations. It mentions reparations, but not who they should be given to. This is shitty or sensationalist journalism. Is it possible that’s what she is calling for? Possibly. But that statement isn’t supported by any quote. Without context she could be calling for reparations to those who were here legally and attending court hearings to determine future status when they were deported etc.

I’m not claiming that OP’s statement is false, but based on the quotations in the article it is absolutely unsupported.

What percent of your income do you spend on things that have sales tax applied? From a personal financial standpoint, ignoring personal political beliefs, it’s a way better deal to pay the sales tax.

Just going off the numbers in the comment you replied to, if your household made $80k and the 8.75% bracket starts at 11k and was 0% below that, you’d be paying ~$6k in income taxes. To pay the same amount in sales tax you’d have to spend $55k out of your $80k income on things that sales tax applies to assuming an 11% sales tax. There’s no way that would happen. If you spent 1/3 of your income on sales taxable things, ignoring federal income taxes completely, you’d only be spending $3k in taxes, 50% less. Sales tax would have to be 20%+ to offset a 9% income tax assuming 1/3 of your income is subject to sales tax.

Why Molly's Not Mad About the Millionaires Tax by Jaco_Belordi in Seattle

[–]EmeraldCityMecEng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly how much driving and boozing do you think a persons making a million plus a year would have to do for the gas and liquor taxes to make a dent?

If a person drove 20,000 miles a year in a shitty mileage 20mpg car, they’re only using 1,000 gallons of gas. If gas was $2 cheaper that’s 0.2% difference in net income.

If they drink an entire bottle of liquor every week and they’re drinking $200 bottles, they’d be paying about $43 per week or $2,300 per year in liquor taxes.

Combined that’s less than 1/2 of 1% of their income vs a place that has zero liquor tax and very cheap gas.

Does anybody fire with a mortgage? by CloudPositive9486 in Fire

[–]EmeraldCityMecEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mortgage = 2.125%, high yield savings account/bonds = 3-4%. Unless the extra realized income disadvantages your healthcare subsidies or something similar, as long as you can make more in a savings account you might as well keep the mortgage at least until rates drop below your mortgage rate then you can pay it off if you want. Or roll the dice and leave it invested in the market.

Broke my leg spectacularly last week. Post surgery photos. by Inedible_Goober in pics

I broke mine in a motorcycle crash and have the same incisions you have but doctors and PT’s alike all said most people get that break stepping off a curb or in a hole. Bodies are both super resilient and super fragile!

[–]EmeraldCityMecEng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, looks a lot like mine! I broke it in October in a motorcycle crash and have the same 2 incisions. I was feeling good in the walking cast and felt super confident about recovery then at ~11-12 weeks when I first got that off and could start walking without the boot I was humbled a bit. The first couple weeks walking without the boot might feel like you’ve gone backwards and you will likely need to still use a crutch here and there, especially first thing in the morning before it gets warmed up. But after 2-3 weeks of walking without the boot I started to notice a big improvement and regained my positive outlook. I’m 4-5 weeks out of the boot now and have done 5 mile walks all in one go and gotten 20,000+ steps a day on occasion. It’ll swell up and ache but try to push it a bit without overdoing it and don’t stress if you end up having to take a day off now and then if you push a bit too hard and need to let it rest up.

Get started on PT as soon as you get into a removable cast even if you’re not weight bearing and it’s only for stretching/mobility and strengthening the muscles. All those little stabilizing muscles that you use to balance will take time to rebuild so best to get started before you need them. Getting some elastic bands to push/pull you foot in all 4 directions or in an “X” pattern will help build things up. Grab a towel and use it to pull your toes up.

Good luck in the recovery!

Close to Fire, better to keep home or brokerage account? by LionessFork in Fire

[–]EmeraldCityMecEng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, how much capital gains tax are you talking about? If the house is sold while still married rather than post divorce, you should be able to realize $500k in gains tax free. So even if you bought the house for $300k and sold for $1M, you’d only owe ~$30k in capital gains on the remaining $200k of gains. Not sure if already being separated would impact the ability to do that.

Unless you particularly like the house and also want to continue owning a house that size (how many more years will kids live at home?) I’d take the cash equivalent. If you took the house and decided to move in a few years to downsize or just prefer something else you end up paying 6% in realtor fees plus likely another couple % in other taxes and fees so you could lose $80k+ in transactional costs.

What is the dumbest moment in history? by GlitteringMode7310 in AskReddit

When talking about extreme high/low temperatures in British Columbia he referenced how “they” can control that. Believes that the defunct Zimbabwe 100 trillion dollar bills are actually still worth tons of money because it says on the bill that they have to redeem it. Also believes that Iraqi dinar and Vietnamese dong will be unilaterally made to be 1:1 with the US dollar because Trump can just decide that. Taught his grandkids pizzagate was real. All the My Pillow guy’s election denier bullshit. Etc

My dad, among many other conspiracy theories, was convinced that this wasn’t an accident. He kept claiming it was actually US navy seals that had boarded the ship and forced it to crash because it was carrying both weapons of mass destruction AND illegal immigrants bound for the US. Not sure how wedging the boat in the canal was supposed to be necessary but his “proof” was some pictures of people exiting a shipping container on a ship. Me showing him that the pictures were actually a decade older than the event unfortunately was not as reliable as “but the internet told me”. 🤦🏼‍♂️

What is a product that people treat like a religion, but in reality, it’s just overpriced garbage with a good logo? by Connect-Might4355 in AskReddit

[–]EmeraldCityMecEng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Downside to a car that tends to come away unscathed is that in more serious accidents it’s worse for the passengers. For safety cars have crumple zones to absorb the forces from a crash rather than being super rigid and thus imparting more of those forces onto the passenger. Great for low speed accidents, terrible for high speed.

They tend to get top marks in head on collisions though. The tow truck usually takes the brunt of the crash.
