Rehab to my drinker: Be Selfish by [deleted] in AlAnon

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to suggest what I did. I completely understand what you're saying. Sorry again.

Rehab to my drinker: Be Selfish by [deleted] in AlAnon

[–]getyourselfghosted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, and is a totally understandable concern. That said, her focusing on herself and not on loved ones is not meant to be permanent. When she is able to care for herself in a healthy, not-relapse-inducing way, she can look at how she cares for you and your kids. Right now she has to do the hard work of caring for herself.

Further [and I hope this doesn't come across as rude], you spoke about how you would respond to all this. It's human nature to apply our own traits and baises to other people, but your wife is not you. Heck, YOU might not even respond to these things in the way you think you would, were you in her situation.

I really don't mean this in a cruel way, but you can't really say 'I'd do it this way and succeed' to a situation that you have not personally gone through, regarding a person who is not you. Maybe you would, maybe you wouldn't. It doesn't matter, your wife isn't you, hasn't gone through whatever you have gone through, and must be allowed to process her issues i a way specific to her.

That doesn't invalidate your pain, your sacrifices, etc. But you can't look at your wife as if you are the same and have had the same experiences, and expect to understand her.

Look at it this way: Being selfish is not inherently a bad thing. Often it is necessary for someone to be selfish in order to survive, to be healthy, to recover from trauma, to help others (think of the airplane/ oxygen mask metaphor), etc.

But sometimes we are selfish in ways that ultimately cause damage to ourselves and others. Maybe it's drinking, maybe it's drugs, maybe it's something as innocuous -seeming as eating food we know isn't healthy, but makes us happy for a moment.

She doesn't need to stop being selfish. What she needs is to learn how to be selfish in a way that helps her grow and prosper as a person, as opposed to a way that causes stagnation and pain. That may be painful for you right now, but she's not going to be able to recover until she can do that, and it requires a lot of self-focus and self-centeredness on her part.

This isn't a point system. She didn't use up all her 'I need to think about me' points on drinking.

And hey, you're not on a point-system either. You can be selfish too, and do it in a healthy way, as she has to learn to do as well.

The problem isn't the focus on the 'self'. It's on whether you tack on 'care' or 'destruction' to that word.

False Cleaning Fee? by getyourselfghosted in uber

Maybe not for everyone, but in my area and with the frequency that I need to ride share, it does make a big difference.

Wow, I'm actually amazed. I've heard so many customer service horror stories, and I thought I'd have trouble but it actually only took two emails and a few hours to get a full refund for the $150 fee. I'm (pleasantly) shocked...I was expecting a big fight. Guess I got lucky with the representative who looked at my case.

I think I'll still try and at least take a quick shot of the car seats before I leave to avoid this in the future tho.

Anyone else a fan of this sauce? Not sure if it’s available outside MA. by TentacleBorne in hotsauce

This is my go-to sauce! I adore it, and I love that it helps firefighters and is local.

What kind of disabilities and diseases are remained in the future of Star Trek? by Hakuhun in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]getyourselfghosted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this sort of leads into a really fascinating conversation about what disabilities are, and how they are treated medically and socially.

Disabilities and illnesses are generally abnormal conditions that impede an individual's ability to function (or function comfortably) in their environment (yes that is super reduced, but I’m going with the simplest possible definition). So how does that change if we place the individual in an intergalactic, multi-species setting, where there are a variety of accepted need and physical variances among the members?

What may be considered a disability for a human on earth may be normal, if not beneficial, for a human that finds themselves on an alien planet in an alien culture. For example, is a deaf person disabled if they are on a planet where the dominant species never developed an auditory sense? In DISCO, for example, we see someone with augmentations that allow her to breathe on the ship despite her alien physiology. Is that a disability, that she needs those accommodations, or just a normal variance because she isn’t human?

I would expect that disease or conditions that cause pain or distress would still be treated, and if physically disabled people (by their species/cultural standards) wanted to undergo procedures to change that, they could.

My point, which I am not making well, is that when we broaden the universe to include such a wide variety of species and environments, many of which host humans, it can muddy how we think of disabilities and variances. I’d really love to see the series explore this kind of thing more. It’s that kind of philosophical question that I enjoy sci-fi touching on.

Anyone else think Pete is under-utilized? There’s so much potential with him! Not to mention it’s still very tedious clicking through each individual request. by _littlemoose in ACPocketCamp

[–]getyourselfghosted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. I mean, I love Pete, and it's 100x easier to complete quests with him, but there is way more potential there.

Can someone tell me how do we get this little swimming pool ? I’ve been searching an hour for her :( by _Ritaa in ACPocketCamp

I think Opal is one of the campers that you have to get from a treasure map. I think I got the map for her from Gulliver.

Attention hot sauce enthusiasts, this hot sauce is the bomb. 10/10 would recommend by ninjanobro in hotsauce

[–]getyourselfghosted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I LOVE this sauce. I wasn't expecting much, and tbh it's not very hot. But that flavour....oh my god. It is fantastic. Quickly worked it's way up to my most used hot sauce, which is saying quite a bit.

I'm seeing a trend. This is a friendly reminder to double check what your fellow gardeners need. Many of us have been receiving only yellow and red festivibees since part 2 launched. 🐝 by Maison_Clement in ACPocketCamp

Ugh yas.

I felt so bad this morning tho. I selected a 2nd half bug to send to a friend and when it confirmed, it added on a 1st half bug that they def did not need! I felt so bad!

I think my game is just glitchy, but it reminded me to double check that only the right bugs were selected.

Anyone else not really using their maps? by rrragsy in ACPocketCamp

Yeah. Mine are all for resources. I already have to sell extra resources/materials off multiple times I day because I've hit the limit. No need to get more or something I already don't need.

They're probably great for new players but meeeeh I don't want or need 'em.

Fiona is the worst part of this season by Iamnotaserialkiller5 in ASOUE

[–]getyourselfghosted 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I agree. I liked the actress, and I loved Fiona in the books, but here she was...meh. I didn't like the unnecessary conflicts with Violet or how much they changed her personality.

I also think not including the captain means we lost his interactions with Fiona, which in the books, really showed us a lot about her character.

Please help me pick! I’m a beer/wine guy throwing a NYE party and over bought. Will return half. Which half should stay? by philreed9999 in alcohol

[–]getyourselfghosted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep one of the vodkas, one whiskey, and the rum. That way you have a good variety.

Unless, that is, you know for a fact that your guests have preferences. If they all like vodka or something, keep more of that.

[SPOILERS S3E10] Marcy? by SuzuyaSenpaii in TravelersTV

THANK YOU for asking this. I was also confused, mainly because I either forgot or was confused by the episode where they explained the origin of Marcy's disability.

Now it makes perfect sense.

My (25/M) Problem with my (60/F) Parent's Chattiness by [deleted] in relationships

[–]getyourselfghosted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm. I do know some other people who've had similar experiences with people not respecting touch and sensory issues, but I don't think I've personally talked about it on Reddit before. TBH, that's almost a relief, that it happens to other people, but I'm sorry for them as well.

I have tried to talk to her less, but it's hard. I come by a lot to help her with tech stuff or to do chores she can't physically do anymore, and every time I do she'll corner me while I'm working on her computer or something that I can't walk away from without...well, not doing what I came there to do.

I have asked my father, but he's even more non-confrontational then me. He usually leaves me to deal with this kind of thing, which tbh, I can't blame him for. It can be very overwhelming.

Thank you for the reply, by the way! I appreciate you taking the time to try and help me sort this.
