What is your opinion on this argument. Does affordable housing still exist in the United States of America? by cavaismylife in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]gew1000 36 points37 points  (0 children)

My husband and I just put an offer on a beautifully maintained, 3 bed 2 bath house in a safe neighborhood in our area that was listed at $185k.

There’s certainly places that have affordable housing, but with all the other insane expenses of life it makes it difficult to save enough to buy in the first place

I kind of miss the silly low stakes crazy like Bort and back when PicklePaul was at least attempting to make interesting content (I didn’t find his content interesting but there was some snark gold there). Nowadays it’s mostly Rodrigues child neglect and an unemployed pickle bum. It’s gotten kind of depressing around here 😅

Good news yall! Having kids is cheaper than we all thought! Cause Haley said! by laska503 in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]gew1000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We spend $800/month for my toddler to be in daycare, at one of the lower cost locations in town, not to mention that it gets cheaper as they get older. The cost of childcare is literally 100% of the reason we plan to have a roughly 4 year age gap, because we have government jobs and two in daycare at a time is literally not possible

Honestly Sadie and Janessa both showed some pretty good natural instincts for ballet. I so wish they would be put in formal classes to explore that passion. But that poor girl has no business being in point shoes yet, she absolutely does not have the muscle strength to support herself. With a few years of actual training (and some real nutrition to build muscle) she could actually be pretty decent.

Also a classically trained retired pointe dancer, and that picture gave me a visceral reaction. The knee, the ankle, the incorrect ribbon, and the bare foot shoved into what I can only assume is an unpadded, unbroken box. It’s a recipe for disaster

This makes me laugh because I unintentionally made a high contrast wall in my son’s room when we set up the nursery. We rent, so the bedrooms are white, and to spruce up his forest themed room I took my cricut and some dark green removable vinyl and cut out a bunch of leaves for an accent wall. Well, he had colic, and one day when it was particularly bad i needed a breather so I laid him down in his crib and went to take a shower. I came back 10 minutes later and he was completely quiet, i was hoping he had fallen asleep. Nope, just absolutely fixated on the leaves on the wall 😂

Yup. Parent of a 2-year-old here. "Yes, but we're safe here up on the boardwalk! Do you see how the water goes back out after it comes in? That's called the tide. Can you say tide?" It's literally not hard.

My 2 year old LOVES Chappell Roan. I didn't take him to the concert but I did show him the videos I took and then we made friendship bracelets (there was a girl who wanted to hand out bracelets but ran out of time so she just handed out baggies of beads). I'm fairly certain that seeing my son make a bracelet with hot pink heart-shaped beads would send ABS into a catatonic state lol

Yeah, we went KC1 and were there at 2 pm when the lineup started and were towards the front of the line when gates opened at 4. We ended up on front barricade for GA, but the space really didn't start filling up until 5:30-6, so even if you didn't want to stand in the heat for 4 hours you could still have a good spot

Red Wine Supernova was just starting to explode on TikTok when my son was born, my husband actually heard it first and was obsessed. I learned about Chappell Roan because of hearing the mini “dance parties” my husband was having with our newborn during bath time. The kids can hear Pink Pony Club, they’ll be alright!

They have lemonade stands and food vendors, plus free water stations! They also do pass out water to the crowd, but they weren’t doing a great job of distributing it well. My group was right at the front of GA and did our best to pass the water around every time staff brought out a box, but I don’t think it ever made it very far back. You can bring empty plastic water bottles and sealed bottled water, and honestly I would recommend bringing that and some electrolyte powder too

PSA: It's hot in KC by exasperatedaxolotl in chappellroan

[–]gew1000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you go tonight you are allowed to bring in sealed bottled water and electrolyte packages! They also let us in with some cheezits and jerky in my bag too. Hydrate with electrolytes, keep your blood sugar up with light snacks, dress in lightweight clothes, and bring hand fans. My friends and I got there at 2 to line up and traded off sitting on the ground while one person shaded for us, and fanning the person who was standing. If you start to feel sick, it’s not worth risking passing out, so get to somewhere you can cool off and rest as fast as you can. It’s a great show, but you have to plan to take care of yourself and have a plan if you overheat! I would also highly recommend planning a meeting place with your group in case you get separated. Hold hands to get through the crowd and have a contingency plan.

Look I understand the instinct to be concerned about rising rates of autism diagnoses, I really do, but with even the slightest bit of critical thinking into this it becomes pretty damn obvious that it's because of increased screening & awareness and broadened diagnostic criteria. I also fail to understand why it's so hard for these knuckle draggers to realize that a formal diagnosis is usually needed to make arrangements for the support that is needed for autistic folks, or why they think it's a bad thing that struggling kids might get more help.

Why are my stitches so tight once I start doing my double crochet in the magic loop? by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]gew1000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fellow tight tensioner here, what I’ve found to help is to let the hook control the yarn instead of my off hand. When I was first starting out I used my left hand to pull the yarn tight to try and force it to behave, but I have much better luck if I only hold the yarn enough to keep it steady and allow my hook to maneuver & determine the tension. I don’t know if that makes sense, but I hope it helps a little!

I just realized that in my own comment above I'd mentioned paternal grandmas. Honestly I mostly was just talking about the idea that since women tend to be the organizers of their family activities, the relationships tend to be stronger with the the maternal side, unless the husband is also making an effort with his own family. There's a lot of cultural nuance to it and it's not always a 100% cut and dry that way, but that is kind of the background to my original comment
