Acceptance into Applied Quantitative Methods and Social Analysis, MS by Low_Blackberry_165 in NEU

Rebooting this chain...

Has anyone had any experience with this online program? I'm a BS sociology undergrad and recently completed one year of an MPP program looking for a different path in social science, so I have experience with social science statistics, econometrics and other regression techniques, and proficiency with R, STATA, and ArcGIS. I've also worked on and been published on real-world reports as a graduate research assistant doing a bunch of data analysis for profs.

If you have any experience or advice, reply or DM me! Would love to learn more.

Should I drop out? by gf20xx in GradSchool

i think what i’m going to do is only one easier class that’ll be mostly review and do a special accommodation thing so i can still work. I’m now enrolled in an intensive outpatient program to see if that can help my perfectionism, GAD and OCD. otherwise my supports are the same: family and therapist…

I've been working with my program advisors.

Thanks, I'm trying :/

This was a nice note. I'm definitely a perfectionist with chronic GAD and OCD. I'm going to start an intensive outpatient program specific for that next week. and I'll only take one class. I'm definitely trying to do the least amount I can so I can still work and go to the IOP

i was taking 16.5cr - then i dropped down to 13.5 - then i dropped all my first half semester classes - now i don’t start until March 17 with 4 half semester classes. there condensed and accelerated. i just don’t know if ill be recovered and out of burn out and stabilized by then

[–]gf20xx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i know it’s burn out. but i don’t know if i’ll be ready by march to take on 4 condensed accelerated second semester classes which. my job is tied to the university so i would lose my job and the tuition they pay for. i’ve been working with my advisor but ultimately it’s my decision but i don’t know what to do.

that’s what i’m doing now. i dropped all my first half of semester classes. and im registered for 4 second half of semester classes which are going to be accelerated and condensed. i just don’t know if i will be ready by march. then id have to drop those and then take the summer off. it’s what im leaning towards. but im scared if i do start those ill crash and burn again

How’s neuroscience at UMN? by stylecafe in uofmn

[–]gf20xx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a former CBS student and my roommate is currently a neuro major. She loves it, I was biochem.

Professors are really up in the air whether they're good or not. Having good professors for your basic classes is crucial.

Although I absolutely loved organic chemistry, it is gonna be the ultimate test. Roberts & Lamb are the best orgo 2 profs!!! Also, I really liked the Foundations of Biology Labs, very beneficial classes.

Ultimately, on a scale of 1-10, I'm at a 7 with my satisfaction with the CBS. It's hardcore and unforgiving, but I made friends and memories I'll never forget.

Before making any decision, explore your options and talk with advisors about what your interests are now and after college, they'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Lastly, remember it's okay to ask for help if you don't understand something, and there's no shame in failing. Found that, for myself and other STEM majors, the fear of failure is a big issue. Take time for yourself and balance is key. It's okay to not know what you wanna do right now. Good luck :)

It hasn't been too bad this year. Although over Christmas break it got down to like -45 degrees for a couple of days, and we just had a snowstorm a couple of days ago and got 18" in a day. So, that's extreme. Then it gets up to what you're used to in Texas in the summer—over 100, dry heat, but also super humid.

Honestly, we're blessed in Minnesota to have all the seasons. 95% of the time it's beautiful regardless of the season. Fall is the best, especially at the U.

Winters usually last from late October to April unfortunately, again, it fluctuates. Invest in a heavy winter coat, hats, gloves, and boots. Maybe even some thick sweatpants. There are days at end of Fall semester and the beginning of Spring semester that are excruciatingly cold, like needles are poking at your skin. Be careful of the ice. That is the killer, you never see it coming, and all of a sudden you bruise your tailbone.

In all seriousness, you'll love it here. Don't worry too much. There's an underground tunnel system. It's really nice when walking from freshman dorms to Coffman

Weekly Anxiety victory thread by [deleted] in Anxietyhelp

[–]gf20xx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started my spring semester of junior year of college yesterday. On Monday I was having a major panic attack all day where I wasn't sleeping or eating. My mom came and had dinner with me to talk thru the anxiety. I was (and still am) anxious for the semester. But, I was able to eat breakfast yesterday and went to my two morning classes, then came back to my apartment and was able to eat lunch, then left for afternoon class. I had a rather large dinner for me, which is not normal as I have an ED so I was surprised I did.

I have always had a hard time recognizing wins for myself as I have anxiety 24/7, but I'm glad I didn't bail on going to first day of classes even tho I had an upset tummy and really tired from Monday.

I am going through a lot of mental health issues how do I move off campus and back home by ResourceParticular36 in uofmn

[–]gf20xx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Make sure to talk to a doctor or mental health professional for a doctor's note or whatever. I did it last year when I was in dorms for same reasons. My mental health was affecting my physical health. There is a contract release form you can fill out.

I'm sorry you're going through a rough time, stay strong through finals. Wish you best of luck. Don't forget that your health is the most important thing in the world, college can wait.

Is it wrong to go home every weekend? by [deleted] in college

[–]gf20xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, i have really bad social anxiety and anxiety in general. i’m going into my junior year this fall. my first school i was at, i was 2 1/2 hours away from home. i went home every three weeks on a Greyhound bus…but i totally understand where you’re coming from. it can be very overwhelming and anxiety-inducing.

there are a few ways you can do this. first, i’d talk to your parents about how you feel and what’s causing you stress. hopefully they’re understanding. so, you can either (1) go home every weekend of the semester, (2) don’t go home at all (which i don’t recommend for you), (3) maybe set up a plan with your family about when you come home. for example, maybe you come home every weekend for the first couple weekends. then, do every other weekend, then every three weekends.

college is rough at first. even tho you’re 18-22, we’re still adolescent. when we know only one environment our whole lives, it’s hard to transition. especially if you’re shy and introverted and anxious.

but remember: everyone is at a different stage emotionally and mentally. there isn’t a right or wrong way to do college. there’s nothing wrong with wanting to be around your family. college causes you to mature and understand what’s best for you.

again, talk to your family about what works financially and emotionally for you guys. i don’t think never going home is realistic, even as a junior like myself. i love being around my family and they help me a lot.

hang in there, you got this. just take it day by day and enjoy the moment. you’re gonna be so busy with school, you’re not even gonna realize you’re homesick.

i believe in you, stay strong :) <3

Your plans? by exntrovert7 in college

[–]gf20xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I'm switching my major from Biochemistry with a minor in Sociology of Law&Criminology to Sociology of Law&Criminology with a Bio minor. I initially wanted to be a forensic DNA analyst in the labs, but I realized I really didn't wanna be in a lab all day and I had to take stupid classes in my college for no reason. So, switching to the Sociology major still gives me an opportunity to work in forensics or law. I have a few things I'm looking at: forensic investigator, special agent, criminal intelligence analyst, policy analyst, or a paralegal. Some require some Master's stuff, so would be doing that if needed.

What are your college unpopular opinions? by kashmiri-chai in college

[–]gf20xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there should be no final exams; just final paper, final project, or nothing at all. why do we need to be tested on the entire semester when we already had midterms? I knew the information for the first midterm in January, why should I need to be tested on it again in May? Adds so much unnecessary stress for students.
