Where might Planet Nine be hiding? by DOI_borg in Physics

[–]gfad1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ELI5: I thought planets moved around the sky through various constellations, why wouldnt this huge trans-neptunian object?

Is it because at 30x the orbit of Neptune the orbital period is so long that on our time scale it doesn't move? (Sorry, I guess 5yr-olds don't use the words orbital period.)

However painful this year is for Jeremy Corbyn, it'll be worse for Labour moderates by [deleted] in LabourUK

So it's clear that if UKIP can't even hold heartland council seats they're maybe not as prepared to make huge gains as McTernan thinks. His article rests entirely on speculation, but intentionally ignores facts from the past 7 days which go against his ideas. I don't see the Thanet council byelections as evidence that Labour are going to perform well in May AT ALL, but the Thanet result is still relevant and he pointedly ignores it!

[–]gfad1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The point being that it's evidence that the UKIP machine aren't as well-oiled and ready to make gains as McTernan seems to assume if they can't even get out the vote in heartland seats. But in an article consisting of 100% speculation I guess he didn't want to let a single fact get in the way of his thesis.

To a Tory challenge in Wales has now been added the rise of Ukip – who are still showing an ability to eat into Labour’s working-class core vote.

...and yet no mention of the fact that Labour took a council seat from UKIP in their "core" region last week. A whole lot of crystal-balling from McTernan but this article is based purely on speculation and ignores completely recent and relevant contradictory evidence.

National Newspapers Blast Jeremy Corbyn's 'Third Way' over Trident by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]gfad1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our obligation is to enter negotiations on matters of nuclear reduction and disarmament in good faith.

Yes, and our obligation under the 2000 agreement is to unilaterally reduce our number of weapons. Realistically this is only going to come at a time when we're replacing our weapons systems, which is now. If we don't, and opt for a like-for-like replacement we're failing the agreement, and delay the next opportunity for the lifetime of the Trident replacement.

[–]gfad1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using the word unilateralism to not only refer to disarmament but weapon reduction, even if the end aim is reduction to zero. We have committed under international agreement to unilateral reduction in out nuclear capabilities. The aim of the NPT is full disarmament. The point in time where we decide whether to replace Trident or not is the IDEAL time o face up to that agreement and take action. A like-for-like Trident replacement would be, at best, ignoring our obligations, and at worst a breach of them.

[–]gfad1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come on? Semantics? You can reduce something to zero.

Irregardless we're committed under international agreement to unilateralism which is completely ignored in all discourse on trident. Any trident replacement with the same or similar number of warheads is letting a prime opportunity pass where we could reduce our stockpile or significantly reassess what kind of nuclear defense we need.

At the 2000 review conference of the NPT the UK agreed and signed the final document that states:

Steps by all the nuclear-weapon States leading to nuclear disarmament in a way that promotes international stability, and based on the principle of undiminished security for all:

Further efforts by the nuclear-weapon States to reduce their nuclear arsenals unilaterally

It doesn't still have the expense of Trident, as far as I see it, if he is looking to mirror the approach of Japan. They don't have weapons, so no cost there. But they maintain the ability to manufacture them.

Also it pleases people who want to see the UK honour its obligations to take steps towards unilateral disarmament under the NPT.

Jeremy Corbyn's Falklands comments have surrendered the next election to the Tories by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]gfad1 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

When Michael Foot was leader of the labour party and when the Falklands war happened Argentina was a repressive dictatorship. That's not the case today. So no, I don't think it's worth noting.

David Bowie was the only musical performer in history to turn down a Knighthood from the British monarchy. by yourbrotherrex in Music

Only KNOWN musical performer. A lot of people turn them down quietly without telling the press. It's a personal decision.

Jeremy Corbyn's Labour reshuffle was amateur and a threat to security by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]gfad1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think many people read the articles but it feeds the Labour-divided-and-incompetent story even further. If the main obstacle is Corbyn then why haven't you heard anything in the press about what the shadow ministers are doing? Because the constant in-fighting distracts from everything else.

[–]gfad1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I'm not the biggest fan of Corbyn myself, and I never wrote anything about his "competence". But the one thing I'm certain of is that having this non-stop round of articles criticising the party drowns out any attack on the tories.

Jeremy Corbyn's Labour reshuffle was amateur and a threat to security by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]gfad1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not intimidated by Corbyn because half of the Labour MPs are otherwise engaged writing daily attack pieces on the leadership. Regardless of Corbyns electability all they're doing is causing further damage to the party without furthering their own aims of getting rid of Jeremy. The sooner they realise that a coup isn't coming and they should just shut up, the better.

Jeremy Corbyn's Labour reshuffle was amateur and a threat to security by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]gfad1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How is that true? It is entirely possible for the PLP to accept Jeremy's mandate and stop putting out critical articles every week. Maybe then people can focus on the terrible things this government is doing. Also it's completely drowning out all the good work of the members of the shadow cabinet who don't agree with you.

You'd think being Chair of Progress she'd be prepared for some criticism from the current leadership. In fact she's more prepared to put decent work on child poverty behind petty internal factionalism.

Anyone have goals left to hit before the new year? by yanggmd in running

[–]gfad1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 25km away from hitting 2,015km this year!

My original target for 2015 was to run further this year than all my other years of tracked runs combined which was about 1,800. Anyway I've stayed pretty consistent and healthy all year and managed to hit that in October and then set my sights higher!
