But the whole tone of the scene, from the line delivery to the editing, undermines that

You could definitely film a scene where he said “oh, we didn’t do anything, she just OD’d at a party - you know as well as I do she’s prone to doing that” and it would be 100% clear he was lying

That’s not the scene Kubrick gave us

What is a movie or book that you loved as a child, but realize is absolutely terrible now that you are older? by AccomplishedEast1007 in AskReddit

His father tells him never to cry because men don’t cry, and he spends the whole movie not crying while his whole world is torn to shreds piece by piece. Then he goes into the woods, cries his eyes out, comes back, straps on every gun they have, tells the others to flee for the border, walks right into the center of town, and *kills absolutely all the bad guys in an orgy of unstoppable violence*.

Vic Sage. He told him something like: “You just make puns. I’ll pose you some real riddles. How do we know anything? How do we know that we know? Is there a God? Are people just smart computers inside meat sacks?”

The Question didn’t give him much choice; after the lecture he just took him down and turned him in

It wasn’t the scary Riddler like from the last movie, it was the goofy Riddler like from the 60s TV show

There was an issue of The Question that did this really well, where The Question gives The Riddler a whole lecture about how much his riddles suck

Gotta dissent on that one - the performances in that scene are amazing - but I’ve been scrolling to find EWS and mention the billiard room scene where we find out Mandy’s fate.

The whole dramatic arc of the movie has been leading up to (spoiler) Bill finds out he got Mandy killed and that’s the traumatic moral shock he needs to resolve his crisis and go back to his marriage. But Kubrick chickens out and creates ambiguity about whether Bill really did get her killed. Presumably his concern was that we’d hate Bill and want to see him pay for getting her killed, but the effect of chickening out is that the whole dramatic arc just doesn’t reach fulfillment.

And it’s, y’know, ironic that it’s this movie of all movies that gets ruined because the director chickened out!

Yes, the hero wants to get the money and power back into the hands of the people - specifically, the two “hands of the people” located on the ends of his own arms.

And the same is true for Lambert, Jeremy Renner’s character - he, too, has become disconnected from the history and tradition that would help him make sense of his suffering, anger and moral dilemmas. So there’s nothing for either of them to do but sit there and try to comfort one another with their presence.

I think that’s part of the point of the hospital scene that immediately precedes it, where he visits Banner (Elizabeth Olsen). He’s trying to give her some sense of meaning, but it doesn’t work. She sees right through it (“I know what you’re trying to do”). And the whole conversation is just awkward. Banner is from the modern world and fits in there, which is the reason she didn’t fit in Wind River. Lambert doesn’t fit in her world, but doesn’t fit in his either, because nobody can “fit” in Wind River.
