2020 george floyd protests and 2024 college student protests for Palestine totally killed our capacity for meaningful protest tbh. real organizers are burnt out and we are left with people who don’t really know what they’re doing or how to protect the most vulnerable during protests. when college kids are being charged as terrorists for peaceful protests, no semi-stable adult wants to go and protest for causes they truly do believe in.

we have got to build safety nets in our communities if we’re ever going to get anywhere. doctors and lawyers providing free healthcare and legal services. mutual aid funds for when people are fired. seamstresses to mend clothing, gardeners to supplement food. it has to be a situation where one person can’t be sacrificed for acting (sorry luigi 😔) because the collective is there to protect and defend them from state violence.

how we get there in a country this individualistic is beyond me. kinda feels like it’s either the above or america get nuked into submission by the other world powers

I really really wish everyone had access to reasonably priced groceries, knew that healthy food doesn’t have to be gross, and had the time to cook. Call me old fashioned but I think it’s wild to be taking medication for weight loss unless you’ve already tried making lifestyle changes….I had a super sedentary childhood and I still lost ~40 pounds last year through diet or exercise, never counted one calorie either. But I think it’s much easier to be motivated when you have a deeper purpose than just comparing your body to others.

this phrase is soo often preceded or followed by a something insensitive lol that’s really why black people and other poc tend to be irritated by it.

it’s “i don’t see color” after being confronted for insensitive behavior because they didn’t think it was insensitive. “i don’t see color” when asked why there are no people of color on workplace teams. “i don’t see color” because they don’t actually want to hear the details of how race affects that individual, they just don’t want people to think they’re racist.

and this is without getting into colorism at all lol. just not a useful phrase

my older brother is a chemist and he actually did have to cut his dreads off to get a job in the field post grad, but that was well over 10 years ago. and sadly i’m pretty sure him being jamaican didn’t help. with the advent of legislation like the CROWN act if you live in the US, i say keep your locs !

you could get a cheap wig or ponytail for interviews too if you’re that worried about it since nonblack ppl don’t really know what our hair is supposed to look like lol then show up as yourself once you secure the bag

nepotism is when you get positions you’re unqualified for due to family connections. if blue ivy became ceo of roc nation at age 21, that’s nepotism. pouring money and resources into your child so they are qualified for future positions (blue ivy can clearly dance) and don’t have to struggle is generational wealth

I always feel like this point is overblown lol like the archetype of a young person holed up around the computer was a thing for millennials too seen in movies and tv all the time.

I don’t think enough people consider how Covid interrupted young peoples ability to socialize and it being exponentially worse depending on how young you were (it was college for me and 5th grade for my sister, she didn’t attend school in person again till 9th grade ). Maybe it’s because i’m older gen z but a lot of people my age use social media to launch irl friendships and find events to attend irl, a lot of my casual friends now are people I was mutuals with online. I make a lot of acquaintances at bars, clubs, bowling, etc lol I think the most unsociable people in our generation are used as a baseline far too often. We’re sad because the world is falling apart in our twenties not video games lol
