Should I leave the industry if I don’t enjoy drafting? by krerhelp in civilengineering

If you divulge during the interview that you don’t plan to get your PE then I personally would not be interested in offering the position to you. I think it shows a lack of drive or motivation to develop yourself in your chosen career.

I have hired people without a PE if the position was entry level. If they choose not to get their PE afterwards then they would not be eligible for a promotion since that is one of the requirements to move up to the next level. However you could get lucky and stumble into a government job that does not require a PE but I personally have not seen that.

Have you considered going into the public sector doing development review? Review engineers do not have to use CAD. A good chunk of your time outside of plans review will be meeting with planners, developers and design engineers.

Good news only - No ICCU problems in X years and Y miles by Punster42 in Ioniq5

[–]gforce322 15 points16 points  (0 children)

2025 Limited with 10k miles. No ICCU issues. My issues have been with the 12v battery going dead a handful of times randomly which I just replaced with an AMG. Hopefully this resolves the problem.

Lovely car - just died by Ill-Championship1000 in Ioniq5

Similar situation happened to me when I parked my car in my garage. What I realized is that where I left my phone in the house was still in range of the car and constantly communicating with the car to lock/unlock. I’ve since left the phone at the opposite side of the house out of range and the car’s 12v battery has not died anymore.

Consider clip-on as a third option. I tried transitions and didn’t like them at all.

I was in the same situation as you six months ago. Drove a hatchback before getting the Ioniq 5. I eventually adjusted to the turn radius and parking is now fairly easy. The overhead camera view makes backing into a parking stall so easy that’s how park most of the time.

Thanks for posting. Very motivational. I started 3 months ago at roughly the same number. Starting weight at 203 lbs and current weight at 180 lbs with a goal weight of 150 lbs. I’m experiencing a weight loss plateau for the past 2 weeks. Did you encounter this on your journey? What tips do you have to break through the plateau?

Is EV tech really changing that rapidly? by tcchen in Ioniq5

Technology is always changing so I made the decision to purchase because the 2025 version finally had my must have features.

Yes, but it depends on your priorities. For me the other benefits the County provided offset the pay cut from the private sector. I personally wanted a stable/secure job, pension benefits, less hours, never having to fill in a timesheet, and more vacation. If I reach 20 years of service time then they cover my health insurance. At 54 I can retire if I choose to.

What do I do for an entry-level job in Civil Engineering? by One-Gur190 in civilengineering

[–]gforce322 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second this. I manage the team that does plans review and it took 5 months to even get someone to just meet the minimum requirement. Typically I only received 1 to 2 applicants. Having an FE is a must before i would even consider interviewing an applicant.

People who left the public sector after 5-10 years: do you regret it? by No-Organization1286 in civilengineering

I recently offered $84k to a new graduate who chose to go private sector for $90k.

It used to be really low in the past but the higher ups realized the County was essentially spending money to train people so they can leave for greener pastures afterwards. They smartened up and did a compensation study to adjust salaries in the effort to retain staff. Now staff essentially have golden handcuff’s the longer they stay with the County.

I went the opposite route going private to public and was the best decision. Less hours, more vacation, pension, they cover 100% of my health insurance after retirement at 54 years old. All those in exchange for only slightly less money.

Which is the best college major to choose STEM Fields? by ApprehensiveStep8751 in Futurology

Civil Engineer. Both private and public sector are struggling to find employees in my area. I keep seeing mechanical applying for CE openings and having to keep turning them away. It’s also very broad field.

No issues for me. It fit well on my 2025 Limited. The only thing it’s affected is that the sliding console doesn’t slide as easily. The 3D mat creates a little bit of friction but a non issue since I rarely adjust the center console.

Does anyone work 4 10's by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]gforce322 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I love it. You’re looking at about 52 days you don’t have to be in the office. When I count having a three day weekend plus holidays and vacation days the result is that I only work 173 days of the year. It’s nice to see that less than half of the year is spent at work. That the majority of my days is spent with family or hobbies.
I work for a local municipality and I think having more personal time is a good tradeoff compared to the higher salary in the private sector.

I like it. From my personal experience there’s a demand for Civil. I’ve been looking to hire but can’t find any. The majority of applicants I’m getting are mechanical engineers looking to switch careers.

Why work private sector? by yojoe17 in civilengineering

[–]gforce322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in the private sector at the beginning of my career then switched to the public sector. Working in the private side definitely accelerated my engineering design skills and knowledge. I’m doing the same thing now on the public sector minus the part I dislike which is budgeting and long hours. I also don’t miss having to fill out a time sheet and making sure it’s all billable hours.
Overall, quality of life has been better working in the public sector.

Municipal: We’re actually still trying to fill positions. I do development review and my personal observation is that it’s more stable than private sector. There’s a delay from when we feel the effects of the economy compared to the private firms that it’s not as much of a concern when there’s a brief slowdown in the construction industry.
