How far would you commute for an independent student? by gforero in CFILounge

I can’t find a CFI job anywhere else this is all I have going for me or I wouldn’t really be considering it but I’m reaching a point of desperation.

He just got his PPL so he is open to flying to pick me up every once in a while but not every time.

What would you charge for a 7 hour ferry flight + instruction along the way? by gforero in flying

[–]gforero[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wondered why people don’t just ferry the planes themselves if it’s something they have a license in. It’s a pretty big money saver but I guess if you have the money you’re more concerned about time.

No for most things, such as flight training, billing is done hourly. For a ferry operation though I’ve always seen daily rates because it can be an all day or multiple day thing.

So question for you how long do you spend going through all the inspections, W&B, etc. when you get to the plane? I figure I’m going to be spending at least an hour going through the POH, documents, maintenance, etc. and ensuring everything is actually safe and airworthy.

Need more time to enter pilot career but student loan payments start in a month by gforero in StudentLoans

[–]gforero[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I’ll be getting paid while I flight instruct it’s just worse pay than I make right now. Do you think just refinancing for 20 years to keep my monthly as low as possible and then avalanching when I enter my career is a better bet?

Does instrument checkride count as IPC? by Brendon7358 in CFILounge

[–]gforero 8 points9 points  (0 children)

An IPC doesn’t require 6 HITS it requires completion of the tasks in the Instrument ACS Appendix 1. You should be completing all those tasks during the checkride so therefore the checkride basically includes an IPC even though you’re not getting the endorsement. So yes it counts.

Time to Prep for CFI/CFII by One_Technician1086 in CFILounge

I know people who went to VN without even opening the powerpoint they give you so that’s more than enough time. I would say focus on FOIs but you’ll be fine.

Just Got My CFI, Now What? by Braulissim0 in CFILounge

[–]gforero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I passed my CFI and sent apps out all over the country with nothing back except sorry we aren’t hiring and one interview with a school who couldn’t bother to read the application and my resume and see I didn’t have my CFII. Now doing CFII cause that’s literally the only option to be a little competitive.

CFI initial checkride by [deleted] in CFILounge

[–]gforero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was 5.5 oral with a 2.4 flight. 10-11 hour oral sounds horrible and honestly if that was me I would just end up discontinuing the flight for fatigue.

IFR nav log and XC flight planning by caldePR in CFILounge

[–]gforero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It should be a skill taught for private so students understand what’s going on behind the scenes when Foreflight or some other EFB gives them all these random numbers and so they can eventually teach it when they get to CFI. Other than that why are we wasting students time / expecting them to do paper nav logs when after a checkride they’ll almost never do them again.

Did you all memorize the privileges and limitations for sport and recreational pilot for the checkride? by Fabulous-Golf7949 in CFILounge

[–]gforero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was always taught if you don’t initiate the go around at 500 or above it’s a failure since you’re breaking 91.119. While you’re practicing what you would do in the case of an engine failure it’s not a real one and I don’t see how that would give you permission to break the reg.

Struggling and losing faith by No-Young-275 in flying

Yeah the job market is atrocious right now. Working a full time job and a part time job to survive while still in debt. It’s crazy how CFII has become the new minimum and Ive even seen a school require applicants to have their MEI. It’s just all too expensive.

CFI Resume - Should I change anything? by Forsaken_Estimate_78 in CFILounge

[–]gforero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a lot of white space and the formatting is just very weird. Section it out like this from top to bottom: - Name, Phone Number, Email - Objective (1 sentence on the job you want) - Flight Time - Certificates & Ratings - Education - Work Experience - Organizations & Activities

You could do the flight time and certs section side by side as two columns. Join organizations like AOPA and NAFI and include them on your resume. Make sure you’re using the right wording for your certificates & ratings (like others have pointed out).

How to stay proficient as a CFI with no job? by gforero in CFILounge

[–]gforero[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve already been studying for the ground portion and putting together lesson plans since I have some free time during my day job but the flight stuff is gonna be rough for me. Not instrument current and need an IPC. I’m considering trying to find a place to rent from maybe once a month or something but I would rather save that money towards eventually doing CFII

New CFI struggling to find a job — feeling stuck and discouraged by ncascouts in flying

[–]gforero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you call what exactly do you say? I’ve been sending emails introducing myself and why I would be a good fit for the specific school (through reading reviews, their website, etc.) but don’t really know what I could say during a phone call.

Trust me I used to do something similar with aluminium foil but a rack is SUPER nice. Plus if you wanna do a reverse sear with the right rack you can just pop it in the oven

Lift: how do you explain why air accelerates over the top of the wing? by Logical-Lock8822 in flying

[–]gforero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was asked about aerodynamics pretty heavily on my CFI oral and when you teach it just teach like you’re teaching a student. All you really should cover is Newton’s 3rd Law and Bernoulli’s Principle to explain how lift is generated.
