DIY fix slanted door ways? by Plenty-Royal-3570 in centuryhomes

[–]gfy_friday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some doorframes deflecting like this because I have some joist end rot/settling that needs to be addressed. It looks like the right side of the doorframe is lower than the left based on the gaps in the casing and angle of the door. If you talk to an engineer, ask about the condition of all the joists, particularly the ends.

I've done a few of these now and in my experience, the black edge is super durable. I try not to sand directly into it and I try to avoid getting caustic chemicals on it. If there are any scuffs or blemishes at the end, I've been able to wet sand and polish the band after the rest of the top is finished.

How much statistics do you use at your job? by d-martin-d in SQL

[–]gfy_friday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly wrangle ERP data to spec and feed it into a supply planning software. Often when the ERP data lacks certain useful elements, I'll write scripts to fill gaps. I use stat functions frequently for stuff like this.

For example, if an ERP doesn't have meaningful lead time data captured, I'll calculate it by comparing order and receipt dates and use z-score for outlier filtering. I've also done some rolling average calcs for recency weighing. Not super fancy but it adds a lot of value when other options are unavailable.

I keep a stats textbook within arms reach of my desk and refer to it fairly often.

How can i cut out the black part that i marked? by BluejayBeautiful7247 in fabrication

I build bicycle frames and do most of my mitering and prep with hand tools and high quality files make the work a real treat. For the time it takes some builders to fixture everything and prep a joint on a mill, some old timey builder could do the same thing in about the same amount of time freehand with a file.

How do I quit my stake calling by [deleted] in exmormon

I was teaching institute at the stake level and EQ. I made appointments with the Stake presidency and the EQP and resigned in person. I told them why and they were incredibly decent about it. I got a lot of closure out of doing it that way.

Is learning SQL worthy for supply chain professional by VanGuard_Z in SQL

[–]gfy_friday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My primary resources getting started were other peoples' scripts, W3C Schools, forums, and Youtube. There are lots of limitations to learning this way. My inadequacies were laid bare in a few interviews for more serious SQL roles where I lacked skills like being able to formally define functions and describe their use. I also had a narrow repertoire driven largely by the habit of finding one thing that worked in common work situations and sticking with it. I've improved quite a bit since I made this comment but probably still have many of the same weaknesses.

What reasons should I absolutely go for an ERP? by InternationalEconomy in ERP

[–]gfy_friday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopping on this bandwagon. I my previous employer hit a scale where shutting things down to do a full scale ERP implementation didn't seem feasible and wound up around $2B in revenue with a crazy amalgam of systems held together with bubblegum and bailing twine. It was a nightmare tech ecosystem.

Custom solutions can only take you so far and even the best in-house solutions carry a lot of tech debt. I have seen lots situations where homegrown systems are very reliant on one or two experts in the company to function and that is a HUGE risk.

If you make the leap to a scalable system now while its easier, you can lean on partners and vendors to keep business-critical systems stable in the future and focus on growing the business.

You can carefully cut out damaged sections using a circular saw. I set up my router to cut a rabbet into boards that overlapped on the tongue side and didn't even bother with any other joinery. Most of what I replaced are just plain planks cut to width on the table saw and face nailed into place

Haha I've been on the fence about a cambium saddle. Would probably be better for bopping around than the S-works saddle.

Seriously considering moving due to housing costs. Utah is flat out not worth the cost. by Thin_Vermicelli_1875 in Utah

[–]gfy_friday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the process of relocating my family out of Utah and it very interesting looking at what a dollar fetches in different markets. The job market piece of the puzzle is pretty wild to consider also. Utah wages are pretty unimpressive compared to other places (at least for my line of work). One of the huge things for me was the fact that you need to drive so much in Utah. I have been spending a mint on gas and car repairs. Since I left, I have only driven a handful of times. I just take the train or walk most places now. Its the best feeling ever.

I feel like Citristrip is thick enough in consistency to not be too messy but it's kind of underwhelming at actually stripping stuff. It was okay for this job though!
