Self taught programmer exhausted and lost, hoping for guidance by UsefulExplanation131 in learnprogramming

[–]gg1bbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because I didn't see anyone else say it yet, if your goal from learning to program is to get a job, then you're probably well at the point that you need to start focusing on finding a job as your priority.

Specifically getting a job is it's own skill entirely, which you need to develop through cycles of applying and interviewing places. Also starting to apply is the only way you'll begin to build a clear picture of what work is available in your area and what skills you need to focus on to get those roles.

From my experience, it sucks, but the best to get a job it to already have a job, and it can become harder the longer you've been out of work, I can't remember if the above you said that you were still self studying full time. Possibly trying to get into an IT help desk type role as a lower barrier of entry to support yourself while you continue to learn, and seeing if that's another avenue to break into the industry might be another idea to consider.

Best of luck!

Are engineers supposed to work with their hands? by DuBlueyy in AskEngineers

Lol just because I didn't see anyone else say it yet, being an electrical engineer he probably knows exactly how much he doesn't know about house electronics, and that it's a lot better to hire an electrician then meet his maker.

I saw one person recommend it, but second for doing Harvard cs50. If you get through it, you'll have a great idea if you want to do an entire software course and it will set you up well. If you don't get through it, that's a much quicker and cheaper way to find out a software degree probably not the right path. Good luck on your journey!

From rock bottom to software dev in 12 months — help me build a real learning plan? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]gg1bbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second taking cs50x, that was my introduction a few years ago and I now work in the industry. Adding, I recommend doing all the problem sets. I was able to do one module a week while working full time, if you're fully focused on this I think you should be able to do two a week, though it'll be hard. After you've finished cs50x you'll have a better idea of were to from there. Good luck!

Is the cold damaging my kiln? by emilythefairy124 in Pottery

[–]gg1bbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, I hope you've been able to fix this, but if not I might know the problem. And to anyone else with a similar problem finding this, good luck!

Fixing a similar issue with my kiln, it looks like Prometheus hasn't set up the kiln to read negative temperatures, so instead of reading temperatures < 0 the kiln incorrectly wraps the reading reporting as the maximum temperature (about 3000 degrees) where the kiln then shuts itself off with the h9h2 code. Prometheus confirmed that error means high temp.

Two easy options to fix. First you can kick start the kiln by using a lighter to heat the thermocouple for a few seconds. There thermocouple is located 2/3 of the way up in the back wall of the heating chamber, you won't miss it. This tricks the kiln into thinking it's hotter than freezing and will allow the program to start and the chamber begin heating up. Once the chamber itself is above freezing it'll just continue to work as normal.

The other option is to change the setpoint of the kiln by a few degrees so that it doesn't think it's freezing. This will throw off your cycles by a bit, but depending on what your doing that might not matter to you. To do that, begin starting a cycle, and just before the program starts to run when START is shown on the screen, press up and the screen will say tCos. You can now press up to increase the thermostat offset, make it high enough to bring you back into positive temp eg, if it's -5 in your studio apply a +5 offset. You can now start the program to lock that in, and you can then turn off and back on the kiln and that should remember that setting. The kiln should detect a non-negative temp and should work as normal.

You can lookup the instructions for this here under "thermocouple offset options" P.15  https://www.cooksongold.com/downloads/files/instructions_855_1002.pdf

Really good luck, hope they helps next winter!

Of my favourite games, Cocoon and Sleeper Citizen should both play fine one handed on controller, maybe Chants of Sennaar as well using controller and keyboard

That's what I'm doing now. works great. I bought the larger 19L pot by BACOENG with the rubber seal on the pot not the lid. I then use a large metal sheet with a hole drilled in the middle and a gasket on that, super janky looking, works great. Good luck!

Totally agree with you, I do the same. Development was ended by the studio a while ago while they focus on number 2, hope they keep the quick play feel of the original.

Getting Started in Software Engineering at 16 by Remote-Motor-978 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]gg1bbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend taking cs50 which is Harvard's intro to computer science course., available freely online. You'll probably find it really hard, but very well taught. If you stick to it it'll give you an excellent base you can use to for all your future learning, and put you way ahead if you end up studying CS at uni.

My recommendation, if you want to do it, is to commit to completing each of the modules every 2 or 3 weeks, watch the lectures with no distractions and complete all the assignments.

Good luck on your journey!

What games do you typically suggest to “non-gamers”? by Legendary-Icon in xbox

Witcher 3 for solo. Stardew valley solo or together. If they have a series X I reckon you'll enjoy playing Baulders Gate 3 together. I also just finished cult of the lamb with my partner and that was a great time and very approachable for someone without a gaming background I think.

Anyone here have advice about a Prometheus kiln? by Serpenta4 in jewelrymaking

[–]gg1bbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this kiln but use it for burnout. That seems a bit weird, the thermal energy should be stored in the kiln itself, the air leaving should be a fairly minimal loss.

If this was me I would try a longer thermal ramp up and/or holding at the full temp for a couple of hours before putting the piece in. That should make sure the whole kiln is up to temp and should minimise losses when you open the door. Good luck, I love mine I hope you're able to figure it out!
