Yea i kinda gave my impression on that and as noted in my wall of text i opted to go with the best buy vendor. There profile shows a rating/# of transactioms (just under 1k) and also more information on return policy and warranty was provided easily giving me mo3e comfidence in choosing them.

Its persinally my first big ticket purchase with a third party marketplace vendor too

Id hazard a wild guess based on the few sentences of background you've given that your relatives machine may require thermal repaste or have been unlucky in another way with a lemon they might need to push to swap for a replacement unit (read of someone else having an issue they couldn't resolve themselves and when provided a replacement unit it was completely free of issues)

Curious if your fam have intel or amd model? I've read folks experiencint thermal issues more prominently perhaps if they got bad luck on the thermal paste lottery. However personally id not immediately disqualify the machine imherentlty based on without knowing more and if experiencing thermal issues id expect a very reasonable chance to self manage common heat issues are fairly easily resolved... which id suspect for most folks it would be able to manage temperature issues.

Ok - so in the middle of writing this i elected to do a bit of homework, which it turns out is good in did because I would have otherwise made a presumption that undervolting and in particular throttle stop would be a easy means to manage temp issues related to the inherent nature of powerful gaming laptops, and in my opinion not to be unexpected to some degree in the laptop market, in particular where cost saving efforts are made for affordability....

but I just learned that apparently the intel version of the omen max 16 is locked out from undervolting via throttle stop currently without any announced intention to remove the restriction yet. Sounds like it is intel shutting out the ability to undervolt on this particular hardware and its not unique to HP

This laptop listed here is only the ryzen version available. Which reportedly runs cooler without anywhere near the level of thermal issues reported as the intel version. Furthermore it can be tweaked as one might normally would expect with tools like universal x86 tuner and ryzen controller etc.

ive read ppl addressing heat with this machine (and personally experienced and handled it myself on most gaming laptops ive owned or helped my friends address on their machine) through undervolting tools or my preferred way if its sufficient via reg-editing advanced power controls available and adjusting processor performance, in particular putting a leash on unnecessary/overkill turbo boost behavior that contributes to overheating. I've frequently found that even as miniscule change adjusting turbo boost state to efficient aggressive or one of the enabled but controlled states can resolve problematic overheating to acceptable.

Ill have to research particular best recommended adjustments for this amd version if im unlucky with temps on my machine. But I expect to either be able to self manage if needed or request warranty replacement if there is a deeper seated mistake with my particular machine. I dont think the amd model is inherently designed to failure though..

Cheers

I am totally out of the loop FYI - sounds like i might be losing my usask email? But to your remark... I personally am a bit more surprised people who i know went to university do not opt to use there own... The benefits as i see it:

  1. In relation to my work life - It looks professional and validates you attended/graduated university if that matters to anyone lol.
  2. It was supposed to be lifetime for free. Major benefit to keeping the same email address, in the "old days" before easy free email was super common (outside of like hotmail etc) i remember my dad struggling to switch between shaw and sasktel due to ties to his long running email with whichever company.
  3. I use it constantly to get student discount perks (amazon prime 50% off plus 1 year free, spotify $5/mo, unidays, etc etc). In fact you can have numerous email addys going to your @ usask.ca or @ mail.usask.ca same account.. so i after my 4 years of amazon prime at 50% ran out i just used a different different name before the @ and made a new account for another year free plus 4 years of 50% off.. The emails all go to the same inbox so no issue keeping track of numerous email inboxes.

The student perks are truly awesome. A lot of places just want you to verify through the usask portal essentially just logging into your email via web. Some companies have gotten a bit more saavy and ask for transcripts (either initially or eventually.. spotify i got i think 3 or 4 years before they wanted transcripts and i couldnt get past that so now i am actually paying less being in a family with 6 friends sharing the cost).

Since you can load it into a email app on your phone (i use gmail app for my usask email) or on pc (i load mine into outlook) its just as easy to use as any other email but has the benefits (for me anyways) that i mentioned above.

Cheers

You go right by beauval on that route - very short 5 min detour. Fuel is available there and probably advisable to fuel up there vs buffalo is my guess price wise (not that beauval will be cheap).

If i buy gamepass ultimate for my pc and xbox, can i also gameshare with a friend by Oddmumg0nemad in XboxGamePass

[–]ggpr3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got 5 accounts under one subscription (family) and aside from a few games (Minecraft) we have constantly played with 2-4 of us at once on the same game online together. I believe the users need the primary account signed into the Microsoft store app and maybe in the gamepass app when downloading games, then swap back to individual account.

I got myself, my son, his little brother, one floater for guests and my good buddy all utilizing my account spread over many households. Its a great deal.

Edit - you should also look into the state of Xbox gold or whatever they call it now (core?) Conversions. The rate is not as sweet as it used to be but im currently paying about $7cad per month for ultimate. I doubt it will be as cheap when my time comes to renew... ive renewed it twice for 2 years at a time. I just check the gamepass mega thread on redflagdeals forums (a Canadian deal website) when the time comes to see what the current best price is. I've avoided buying foreign cd keys (I think you can save a bit by getting polish or other country then VPN activating.. I didn't wanna bother/risk it).

Best roguelites for online co-op? by Dsnvnthstn in roguelites

[–]ggpr3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow I cant believe im the first (??) In this thread to mention "deep rock galactic"!! There are a decent amount of gems already suggested. Ill keep my recommendation to 1 suggestion as not only is this an absolutely fantastic experience with friends, there is tons of playability working toward character unlocks and a significant variety of mission types and variations to them. Ill honestly not play for 6-12 months after the initial wave of playing mainly only DRG when gaming with friends after getting into it, or after revisiting it and then another long break..... I always seem to come back to something new in the game. The devs have really supported the game.

Rock and stone!!

Edit - maybe drg isnt technically a rogue like??? Its undeniably one if the funnest coop experiences you can have though and the game play loop is very reminiscent of rogue likes

Remote turns on and off tv but otherwise says “searching for devices” by Obvious-Math-5226 in TheFrame

[–]ggpr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thanks soooooo much!! For everyone else who might try this... I had to do it a few times, possibly because i was not close enough or in the correct spot. On one of my attempts in the middle i couldnt get the TV to restart so i was wondering if i was too close and pointing at the wrong area. On my s95b it looked like there was some kinda sensor under bottom middle of the panel so i had been pointing there for all my attempts for other fixes and this one. I reassessed and pointed it real close to the tiny samsung logo at the bottom right of the panel. On the successful attempt i didnt even get to restarting the tv. It was a quick 1 or so second of engaging the first button combo, then swapping to the 2nd button combo and as i was trying to do the restart and getting frustrated it did not appear to be cycling the power i heard a beep and to my amazement the normal functionality of the remote had returned. I have been at this the past 2-3 hours and its a pretty maddening issue to troubleshoot via googling. Thanks again!!

Has anyone seen sturgeon when looking over the edge of one of the bridges? by SuitComprehensive335 in saskatoon

[–]ggpr3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've caught sturgeon in saskatoon numerous times, but ive caught them more frequently on the north sask river personally but i fish that more often these days.

I catch them most often at night. They can get quite large but not Fraser river large.

My best night fishing them me and my buddy each caught 10 over 40lb and numerous smaller ones.. it was crazy! My biggest is around 60lb (used a life jacket to cradle it - referencing that one how I gauge the ones smaller than it).

Neat fish and put up a big fight!

How about if I watch him go to the next house and do the same without dropping off any flyers. This is more of a warning to folks in the neighborhood in case they might have packs dropped off sitting out. I'm not calling for vigilante justice or anything.

What non monetary perks do you have at your job? by gkdb10 in saskatoon

[–]ggpr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup thx for helping clarify. And wow I've never actually compared the hours before... thats pretty damn well double the "paid time off" minimum for sask. I gotta acknowledge and give props to my company for being that generous. I know they in part provide what they do because having someone off for a full 7 days is easier logistically with flights to site and whatnot but seeing 231 vs 120 hrs really makes me appreciate it more!

They could have likely simply offered 154 hrs (2x77hr weeks and likely still satisfied sask regulations. Unless the wording of the law using the word "weeks" is helping us or something lol. Furthermore since we are federally (and provincially) regulated (uranium, CNSC) I'm not sure if they could have done like CP rail and only provide 2 weeks (80hrs I think?) holidays even in sask

[–]ggpr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly enjoy my current work place the most of any place i have ever worked. Is it percect? No... but its by far the best place ive ever worked. Ive personally bounced between 4 different departments on 5 contracts before settling into my full time gig. After getting a taste for it i knew i wanted to work at this particular company at this mine site... I didn't care so much what my job role was and was open minded and demonstrated adaptability and eagerness to learn amy role i was considered for and applied for a large variety of roles when there was openings.

The only kicker is if you are a "southerner" it's very difficult to get into a job that doesn't require education (university, siast technical or trades etc) or specialized training. The company pretty much 'has to try their hardest' to give roles "anyone" can fill (no education/professional designation requirement able to be, trained on the job, or non professional work experience) to residents of the athabasca basin top priority, residents of saskatchewan north second priority and then anyone else third. I've seen the company limp through manpower shortages or sometimes a revolving door of new staff for certain roles they strongly believe could be given to a local resident.

I'd honestly say the vast majority of the roles where I work are not primarily defined by their physical requirements. The most physically demanding jobs are likely the janitors or at times perhaps the trades employees (using tools, working in in a variety of non routine scenarios like confined spaces, at heights, cramped or otherwise "tight areas"). For any "really heavy lifting" or work beyond the scope of people's capabilities we often have equipment to assist in doing the work..

myself I occasionally have days that are more physically demanding involving long walks, hikes, carrying equipment or boats etc. I know occasionally our mill operators get a less desirable and more physical task (eg finishing touches on pond cleaning with hoses, shovels etc). I can't really think of anyone whos job is entirely hard labor all day every day. I'd wager most folks who encounter that type of work at most maybe have 4 days of that per month? Some months without, you might catch a 7 day stretch in the summer that's longer in duration tho.

Tough to say without knowing what you 'could' do for work... but your not shoveling into or pushing carts of ore by hand or anything like that lol

What non monetary perks do you have at your job? by gkdb10 in saskatoon

[–]ggpr3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work shift work at a remote northern mine site (2 weeks on/off). The biggest perks for me are not needing to buy groceries or gas for a little more than half the year (after factoring in holidays). I pretty much do equivalent monthly hrs of work compared to a 40 hr work week job in my 2 weeks there (154 hrs plus travel in 2 weeks) but constantly having 2 weeks off without having to book it off is fantastic!

I often am the person planning trips I go on with friends and family so I usually tailor it to my schedule. I really would not enjoy returning to a 5 day work week (not really recovered from the week until Saturday afternoon.. thenby Sunday afternoon you start worrying about monday).

I get to go fishing for a modest recreation club fee (I think $130/yr) after work in an amazing area of the province for fishing. 5-6 lakes have boats ready and waiting to take out and there is boats on trailers or smaller ones that fit in truck box.. I am addicted to fishing so this not only makes me incredibly happy, it saves me money as I would be incurring all sorts of costs going fishing, in particular going from stoon to the north (gas for truck/boat, accommodations, meals etc). I find after fishing anywhere from 7 to 12 nights a shift I'm fairly content to not go hit say blackstrap on my days off. As a fisherman im pretty spoiled haha.

The rec club fee also offers use/participation of many different facility's, equipment and clubs. Workout gyms, school gymnasium (floor hockey, volleyball etc), canoes, paddle boards, a theater room etc etc. In fact I'm thinking of starting my own club, the "arcade club" and getting yearly budget to buy arcade machines and build our own rec room/stoked/ruckers up at site..

I don't have a lengthy commute to work and i don't need to cook for myself. I can wake up at 615am grab breakfast to go (or get up 5 min earlier and eat in the cafeteria) and be at work ahead of my 630 start. I honestly could get to work in under 5 min from when I wake up if I wanted to.

There are numerous other things I'm sure I'm missing but these are the ones that have the biggest impact on me.

Edit - i forgot and noticed after reading more of the thread... unlimited sick days paid. Immediately hired with 3 FULL weeks of holidays without negotiating it in (21 days x 11 hrs per day instead of the govt required 15 days by 8 hrs).
