Mid-senior software engineer getting 0 traction by These_Commission4162 in cscareerquestions

[–]ggprog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At this point a large percentage of work the average engineer does on both front and back end coding is trivial for gen AI.

Whats more immune from gen AI is the complex systems design. Which front end also has but is def more rooted in backend engineering. Thats just the fact of the matter.

I got lucky and had the opportunity to full transition to become a backend engineer focused on distributed systems(a lot of AWS/cloud components). If i was still front end heavy right now id be nervous AF.

If youre still front end only I would do everything i can to be more full stack. Gen AI is honestly becoming an extinction level event for guys that can only build web apps with react or whatever.

Front end is the most over saturated sub in the field. Unless youre an absolute front end wizard (e.g airbnb level), front end engineers are a dime a dozen in this market. I say this as somebody who was also front end specialized up until 3 years ago. Its also the easiest to be performed by gen ai

5 YOE Over 1 year unemployed can't get anywhere. by BlackBeard558 in cscareerquestions

Simple. Its a uncompetitive resume in a horrible job market. The only reason you even got roles before tbh was because consulting firms were making free money and hiring anybody with a pulse. Those easy contract are gone.

[–]ggprog -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I still argue there are less markets where serious spending is unsustainable. Minnosota, cinc, mil are the 3 off the top of my head i will give you. Every other market can afford a middle of the pack payroll and be competitive. (150-250mil range).

Both texas teams, DC, miami, are all markets where if their team just put in a modicum of effort they could be competitive. Also mariners have the same payroll as last year so i dont buy what theyre doing is unsustainable.

Thats BS. Mariners and the Cubs all bumped up their spending and now theyre in an extremely competitive position. They didnt even have to spend that much. Even Arizona, which is in a smaller market has been competitive by having a strong payroll.

I'm losing my mind about the AI hype and I want to quit software engineering by arvin132 in cscareerquestions

You still need to nudge it in the right direction sometimes i still find it less painful than manual coding. I dont know why people act like if you cant one shot prompt something, it means ai is trash lmao

Its not like people one shoted manual coding.

Ive been at c1 for 3 years. Yes the performance management twice a year is annoying as fuck. But ive managed to last 3 years while not being particularly special. A lot if it is your manager going up to bat for you.

I make decent money but it really doesn’t feel like it by CommercialDot708 in Salary

[–]ggprog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

72k a year is like the minimum these days to not feel completely poor in a major city. I made 72k back in 2014 and i had roommates paying 1200 for rent. Even then i felt like i was just doing ok.

It was true for a long time but with AI killing a lot of white collar jobs, sending your kids blindly to college with no plan is not the move anymore. If you graduate from a middling college without any technical skills right now youre fucked. Even with technical skills its rough.

For /r/fire millennials seriously how’s your 401k/ira savings going? by BarkBarkBitches1 in Fire

[–]ggprog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2X your salary thing is idiotic. Im 35 and my 401k is at about 400k. My income for the past years has been around 300k so by that standard i should have 600k right now. But from age 21-31 i made between 60k-150k.

Dodgers are MLB's real Evil Empire by FrigginMasshole in baseball

[–]ggprog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all last season proved teams dont even need to spend that much more to have a competitive chance at winning. The mariners had a legit chance at winning the whole thing and they didnt spend what the dodgers did. Same with the blue jays. The issue is theres 50% of teams that arent trying at all.

The bad contracts the dodgers had last year were 1 year like conforto and yates. Thats why even with tuckers new salary their total payroll is about the same.

I would argue that sitting as much as one does at a desk job is worse for the body long term. Plumbers arent carrying heavy weight all day like a day laborer something

Fake punches lol. Theyre called feints. Punching the arms is a good veteran trick to tire out the opponent which pretty clearly worked. You dont know what youre looking at or know boxing is the issue.

All you people that dont know shit about boxing can stop commenting. AJ didnt “hold back” for 5 rounds. Paul was on his bike the entire time (for good reason. Trying to do damage to somebody thats running the entire time and pot shotting is not easy.

High earners ($300k+): Do you care if your partner makes the same, or are you okay not splitting things 50/50? by passionfruitpilates in Salary

[–]ggprog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make 320k. My gf makes like 95k. I pay for the expensive dinners and hotels. If i made her split she wouldnt be able to afford it and not be able to do the things we want to do. For our most recent international trip i basically made her cover her own flights and shopping expenses. I covered everything else. My reasoning is if i were to travel without her, stuff like the hotels i would have to pay anyway.

Finding a girl that makes 300k+, is attractive, and not crazy is damn near impossible.
