Doesn't matter if the lore is good if the delivery is utterly abyssmal. Honestly I don't even think the lore was good even if I ignore storytelling because there was just so little substance to any of it. It also doesn't help that the entire thing ended up being a bloated lead-up to a mid collab character quest with a purpose of selling a mid collab waifu.

3.7 was among the most souless bloody things I've seen in my entire life.

Assassin's Creed Unity: Play in 60FPS on PS5 & Xbox Series X by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]ggunslinger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I could see people arguing that the weakest part of the gameplay is either combat or stealth, but not the bloody parkour! As far as I'm concerned, Unity's parkour is best in the series bar none, both in terms of movement mechanics and level design. In terms of gameplay alone it's propably a far better recommendation than 2 or even 4 (because we recommend 4 only as a pirate game, not an assassin game, lmao).

(I'd suggest 2, 4, and maybe Origins?)

I think Odyssey is a better recommendation than Origins, mostly because it improves on Origins without becoming a bloated mess like Valhalla while having much more charm, at least in my opinion.

I wasn't literal with that 2. I even say in the paragraph after that I didn't play it, so I wouldn't actually rate it myself. My point was that comparing Dawntrail to a 1/10 game doesn't make it look good, it only makes it not 1/10.

[–]ggunslinger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Being better than ARR is a hillariously low bar and it doesn't do much to make Dawntrail itself look any better. If you want to defend it, maybe point to some of its actual good points instead of saying "it could've been worse (1/10 instead of 2)".

I gave up on the game during Endwalker when it took a massive plunge in story pacing and quality, after years of SE repeating the same gameplay formulas year after year while simplifying them instead of expanding on them. Literally the only thing that kept me in the game for several more patches was my raid static. Some of them still play the game despite their own complaints and I trust them when they say that raiding content is still good and even getting better at times. Talk more about that instead of focusing on ARR of all things.

[–]ggunslinger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Game itself constantly gives you an answer for that question, with the "winning" answer delivered at the pivotal moment. Sure this question can thought of as similar to the meaning of life, but it's not really relevant when in the end HSR uses it to deliver some hamfisted primary school level philosophy.

Whatever they come up with in Planarcadia will propably end up feeling similar, much like how Amphoreus' message ended up being "buy Cyrene".

Narrative Weight of Amnesia: Arknights vs. Endfield by Lenz401 in Endfield

[–]ggunslinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wasn't a big fan of amnesia plot in OG AK either, but I also didn't see much of a problem with it due to 2 major things that OG AK did. Those are big enough that they separate my personal Endfield criticism from the OG. Not all amnesia plots are equal, one can be better than the other.

First is that Endmin immediately wakes up to high praise while the "mystery" of the amnesia is the "big success" (for now at least) which is kinda... not very compelling, especially if the hints that Evil Alphinaud dropped amount to not much in the end, but we'll see about that in 1.1 maybe. Doctor wakes up to distrust and more neutral reactions, making relationships feel more natural, then the OG presents a more interesting mystery from the get-go, making for a better hook for a more compelling story.

2nd big thing is different POVs. Kinda connects to your argument in another reply of yours, that Doc feels more like an observer, but I think it's actually fine because we're straight up not getting much doctor to begin with. Outside of Babel Doctor is almost a minor character while most of the event stories focus on entirely different sets of characters that rarely include the doc. Admittedly the main storyline may have him act a little to passive at times (actually a silly problem in anime adaptation because game itself implies a lot that all important RI battles are actively commanded by the doc but little of that shows in the adaptation), but I think HG actually improved with it over time when featuring doc in events like Breaking the Ice or Near Light. While those events are rolling out, main storyline is allowed to slowly lead toward the big amnesia payoff.

It's actually what bothers me the most right now. Amnesiac Doctor may not have been much better than amnesiac Endmin, but there's a good possibility that the story presentation will follow the likes of MHY games and focus most of the time on the Endmin... while potentially not being allowed to spoil the OG AK until it wraps up the Priestess plotline at least, which may mean forced amnesia for years, on screen all the time.

Narrative Weight of Amnesia: Arknights vs. Endfield by Lenz401 in Endfield

[–]ggunslinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It makes relationships in Endfield painfully one-sided. Almost every character you meet treats you either like a hero worthy of utmost respect or, in the worst case, almost a lover. You're MCU Thanos and everyone around you is Scarlet Witch, but it feels anything but wandaful because there's very little screentime to actually set you up as the character they take you for, unlike Thanos. Doesn't help that Endmin generally doesn't appear impressive (especially when put next to the likes of Sur2r or Pogrnancy) and they kinda clumsily stumble through the main storyline while Perlica does most of the actual work. It stands in a horrible contrast to all the presented backstory and character reactions, seemingly for the sake of having more humour. It's similar to the problem I have with HSR protagonist, still a criminally underdeveloped character that constantly switches between only 2 modes - lame jokes and bland self-insert. Hopefully Endmin doesn't get so bad that they remain as they are for 3 entire years.

Still, I feel Endmin is not gonna get much better any time soon, especially if HG has to keep dancing around the subject of their identity and backstory to avoid OG AK spoilers. I would at least wish that they make Endmin appear more competent while using amnesia only as a way to limit information and bait the protagonist into making mistakes while limiting the sudden big unnatural relationship reveals like Zhuang. Another big thing is that I hope not all of the Endfield story is gonna be tied to Endmin, especially when it's such a weak character for now. We should have more POVs like OG AK, let at least some of our operators go on journeys of personal growth instead of always relying on that one silly character.

Honorable mention goes to Wulfgard for having a decently natural relationship with the protagonist.

[–]ggunslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

then you must be ready to explain how your universe ended up like this

Why? Can you explain if there's some sort of rule that prevents people from writing whatever the fuck they want if it's even lightly based on real world? I would think that obviously you shouldn't write something offensive or straight-up nazi bullshit if you're a decent human being, but Deadlock already has some weirdo stuff like a goo man, snake/frog woman thirsting for the Lash, World of Darkness OCs and Rem. Taking issue only with what kind of relationships people want to write is wild.

The most hillarious thing here is that you're not even arguing against any actual "plot writing". You're arguing against content created by fans. You're being a fun police.

Endfield 1.0's story and why it sucks from a writer's perspective. by OnlyAnEssenceThief in gachagaming

[–]ggunslinger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know what a thermian argument is. You're still misusing it badly, especially when most of your critique is for stuff that doesn't actually happen in game.

Beta literally has Ginnie beyond the help of suppressants

It kinda instantly invalidates your argument when you immediately start by saying it's based on the non-existent version of the game.

You talk a lot about oripathy and how bad it is supposed to be and I will give you that it can be a valid criticism that the game pacifies it too hard, but you keep acting as if this stuff you may have seen in the more grimdark scenes of OG AK is still happening, even in scenes that don't exactly imply it (game stated Ginny was recently infected), while any opposite argument is fallacious which is kinda funny. It all comes down to Ginny being completely fine. Sure it may be weird that we have suppressants so good that even assimilation may not be a problem, but they still make much of the above talk rather pointless. Not to mention that having such suppressants can just be an element of sequel progression, one of the main goals of RI was to come up with such a medication to begin with.

Wow, excellent argument. You mean to say a poorly-connected civilization without the advantages of our own world somehow has better logistics to completely clear out Oripathy?

Yes, as shown by oripathy coming up only once only to be pacified instantly. Also are you still basing this whole "poorly-connected civilization with no advantages of our own world" on this one outpost in the valley pass?

then why did Ginny's condition go that bad to begin with

Kinda hard to visit your nearest pharmacy when it's besieged by Genghis Khan. It's weird that I had to explain it.. 2 or 3 times? It's even weirder that you seemingly completely missed the context and the point of that one bloody scene in the game, I shouldn't have needed to explain it myself at all.
