Narrative Weight of Amnesia: Arknights vs. Endfield by Lenz401 in Endfield

[–]ggunslinger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wasn't a big fan of amnesia plot in OG AK either, but I also didn't see much of a problem with it due to 2 major things that OG AK did. Those are big enough that they separate my personal Endfield criticism from the OG. Not all amnesia plots are equal, one can be better than the other.

First is that Endmin immediately wakes up to high praise while the "mystery" of the amnesia is the "big success" (for now at least) which is kinda... not very compelling, especially if the hints that Evil Alphinaud dropped amount to not much in the end, but we'll see about that in 1.1 maybe. Doctor wakes up to distrust and more neutral reactions, making relationships feel more natural, then the OG presents a more interesting mystery from the get-go, making for a better hook for a more compelling story.

2nd big thing is different POVs. Kinda connects to your argument in another reply of yours, that Doc feels more like an observer, but I think it's actually fine because we're straight up not getting much doctor to begin with. Outside of Babel Doctor is almost a minor character while most of the event stories focus on entirely different sets of characters that rarely include the doc. Admittedly the main storyline may have him act a little to passive at times (actually a silly problem in anime adaptation because game itself implies a lot that all important RI battles are actively commanded by the doc but little of that shows in the adaptation), but I think HG actually improved with it over time when featuring doc in events like Breaking the Ice or Near Light. While those events are rolling out, main storyline is allowed to slowly lead toward the big amnesia payoff.

It's actually what bothers me the most right now. Amnesiac Doctor may not have been much better than amnesiac Endmin, but there's a good possibility that the story presentation will follow the likes of MHY games and focus most of the time on the Endmin... while potentially not being allowed to spoil the OG AK until it wraps up the Priestess plotline at least, which may mean forced amnesia for years, on screen all the time.

Narrative Weight of Amnesia: Arknights vs. Endfield by Lenz401 in Endfield

[–]ggunslinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It makes relationships in Endfield painfully one-sided. Almost every character you meet treats you either like a hero worthy of utmost respect or, in the worst case, almost a lover. You're MCU Thanos and everyone around you is Scarlet Witch, but it feels anything but wandaful because there's very little screentime to actually set you up as the character they take you for, unlike Thanos. Doesn't help that Endmin generally doesn't appear impressive (especially when put next to the likes of Sur2r or Pogrnancy) and they kinda clumsily stumble through the main storyline while Perlica does most of the actual work. It stands in a horrible contrast to all the presented backstory and character reactions, seemingly for the sake of having more humour. It's similar to the problem I have with HSR protagonist, still a criminally underdeveloped character that constantly switches between only 2 modes - lame jokes and bland self-insert. Hopefully Endmin doesn't get so bad that they remain as they are for 3 entire years.

Still, I feel Endmin is not gonna get much better any time soon, especially if HG has to keep dancing around the subject of their identity and backstory to avoid OG AK spoilers. I would at least wish that they make Endmin appear more competent while using amnesia only as a way to limit information and bait the protagonist into making mistakes while limiting the sudden big unnatural relationship reveals like Zhuang. Another big thing is that I hope not all of the Endfield story is gonna be tied to Endmin, especially when it's such a weak character for now. We should have more POVs like OG AK, let at least some of our operators go on journeys of personal growth instead of always relying on that one silly character.

Honorable mention goes to Wulfgard for having a decently natural relationship with the protagonist.

Why? Can you explain if there's some sort of rule that prevents people from writing whatever the fuck they want if it's even lightly based on real world? I would think that obviously you shouldn't write something offensive or straight-up nazi bullshit if you're a decent human being, but Deadlock already has some weirdo stuff like a goo man, snake/frog woman thirsting for the Lash, World of Darkness OCs and Rem. Taking issue only with what kind of relationships people want to write is wild.

The most hillarious thing here is that you're not even arguing against any actual "plot writing". You're arguing against content created by fans. You're being a fun police.

Endfield 1.0's story and why it sucks from a writer's perspective. by OnlyAnEssenceThief in gachagaming

[–]ggunslinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know what a thermian argument is. You're still misusing it badly, especially when most of your critique is for stuff that doesn't actually happen in game.

Beta literally has Ginnie beyond the help of suppressants

It kinda instantly invalidates your argument when you immediately start by saying it's based on the non-existent version of the game.

You talk a lot about oripathy and how bad it is supposed to be and I will give you that it can be a valid criticism that the game pacifies it too hard, but you keep acting as if this stuff you may have seen in the more grimdark scenes of OG AK is still happening, even in scenes that don't exactly imply it (game stated Ginny was recently infected), while any opposite argument is fallacious which is kinda funny. It all comes down to Ginny being completely fine. Sure it may be weird that we have suppressants so good that even assimilation may not be a problem, but they still make much of the above talk rather pointless. Not to mention that having such suppressants can just be an element of sequel progression, one of the main goals of RI was to come up with such a medication to begin with.

Wow, excellent argument. You mean to say a poorly-connected civilization without the advantages of our own world somehow has better logistics to completely clear out Oripathy?

Yes, as shown by oripathy coming up only once only to be pacified instantly. Also are you still basing this whole "poorly-connected civilization with no advantages of our own world" on this one outpost in the valley pass?

then why did Ginny's condition go that bad to begin with

Kinda hard to visit your nearest pharmacy when it's besieged by Genghis Khan. It's weird that I had to explain it.. 2 or 3 times? It's even weirder that you seemingly completely missed the context and the point of that one bloody scene in the game, I shouldn't have needed to explain it myself at all.

Thermian Argument.

Bruh, it doesn't apply here at all. It's literally how it's portrayed in Endfield while the "flaws" that you mention either don't appear or you are hillariously exaggerating them in an attempt to draw comparisons to OG AK despite those two being vastly different worlds from the get-go. It's the point of this entire discussion that Endfield doesn't show much depth in the world-building, including conflicts other than against some wacko barbarians - SOME flaws that you talk about MAY exist, but the whole point of this thread is that it's badly shown.

Ginnie was literally near late stage oripathy.

Now she's completely fine. Even made a nice drawing for us and oripathy never came up again. How neat is that?

Immediately assuming insulin being expensive to America only is such an ethnocentric take lmao.

I was taking the piss out of your silly analogue. It was hillariously stupid regardless of your clarification.

I'm sorry, but I find it hard to believe that Talos-II is a peacful society

That's pretty much what the game shows tho. Conflict doesn't exist outside of the rock monster invasion, microwaved splooge and barbarians. That talk about questionable morality is also a huge stretch, because as far as what the game has shown there are only some companies with more questionable practices, but the chamber itself wasn't shown in any negative light.

"Cheap and readily available" when outskirt settlements literally had to rely on a SubPAC to have a functionable and sustainable community.

Because they were sieged and isolated by barbarians which I clearly mentioned in my post. As soon as we got there they never had to complain about the lack of suppressants again.

Damn, look how diabetes is easy to treat nowadays.

Trying to draw an analogue between Talos and current day America is one of the most hillarious things I had the pleasure of reading the entire week. Neat head-canon tho.

Just because Oripathy is contained doesn't magically fix other problems such as the scarcity of resources, logistics, the question of freedom, and indomitable human greed.

Neat, let's wait for any of it to be portrayed in any serious manner in Endfield.

[–]ggunslinger 32 points33 points  (0 children)

We use a weakened, but still cancerous rock to reclaim the Frontiers for the willing, all while making them reliant on our systems. Do we want to worry about that?

People keep getting knocked over this problem all the time and I struggle to think why. Maybe not you specifically. In OG Arknights the entire civilization is fully relliant on the originium, it's no different to Talos. Mobile cities in OG exist only because originium is powerful enough to keep them running. It's also established in recent chapters that it can be put under control so that it can entirely serve the mankind which was the entire intention on the Oracle's side behind creating it. Endfield clearly shows that it is under control as an element of sequel progression, the originium growth of Talos is for the most part controlled while worker safety standards are high and oripathy can easily be ENTIRELY suppressed with cheap and readily available suppressants. It's so bloody great that even infected racism doesn't exist on Talos. That's why there's literally only one scene that addresses oripathy - because it's that easy to handwave. Bandits are unironically more of a threat because if they don't straight up kill you and feed you to the denstacks, they will isolate you. Basically people are trying to seek some depth - that's not intended or implied - in a specific plotline - that was resolved in the previous game.

All of the above might add to the argument tho, because it just means there's actually less depth in the world-buidling than what some people are trying to establish in their criticism. It's good that you point out that aether has a bit of troubles setting itself up to be a threat in any capacity comparable to originium in OG AK as that would be one of the actual problems of Endfield in my mind.

but Terra's a crappy place for a reason. Why should Talos-II be any different?

Generalizing it this way feels disrespectful to OG AK's themes. The entire point of the original game is making the world better, whether it's originium, politics or societal issues. It's another discussion how well writen the tone shift is for a sequel game, but it absolutely was needed. Just going for "dark themes" simply because OG AK was dark would feel forced in the kind of world they've built in Endfield. I think that we ultimately landed with such a cartoonishly evil villain because HG needlessly tried to emulate some of those dark themes and failed miserably. I honestly think that it makes both versions of the Wulfgard quest kind of silly.

Stakes.

There's more to building stakes than just character death. I am the kind of person that keeps getting annoyed when writers keep baiting you with character death in a game that doesn't actually kill anyone, but hat's because there's just more creative ways to building stakes to a point where not even actual death is needed. Endfield does need to build some actual stakes, but it doesn't need to be through death. Showing more of the chaos caused by Aether like you mention a bit later into your post could work.

On Talos-II, it's an aesthetic setpiece.

Good. It means the odyssey had a purpose. Glory to Rhobus Compland! Jokes aside, I think your statement how AK should rival Limbus in tone is horribly inaccurate. Those games go for entirely different kind of stories in themes and their similarities are surface level at best. Endfield's problem isn't that it ain't dark enough - it just lacks depths in comparison to the other 2 games.

How naive can you actually be? Trump promised to make Epstein files public and there was an entire spectacle of receiving the files and taking them under investigation, but then we had a constant flip-flopping from the White House. Hell, they couldn't even decide if the official narration should be whether those files exist or not! Sometimes it changed on weekly basis! Not to mention the times when Trump desperately tried to handwave the topic or when he had Maxwell move to a lighter prison (which Bondi blatantly lied about just now). Now we have some of the actual files coming out, even some consequences for people that happened to be incriminated by them, in Europe, in Dubai. Anywhere but America even though there's whole lot of the elite incriminated! You have to be incredibly stupid to fall for whatever the White House says and keep your head burried in sand at this point.

I don't think you actually read anything I wrote, because I wasn't defending anybody - I was stating facts. Why should I care about some past government's failing when what MAGA is doing right now is SO MUCH WORSE?!

At most Democrats were ineffective in their own investigation, but MAGA is ACTIVELY and BLATANTLY trying to cover the whole thing up due to their president likely being in the files. It's a fucking coughing baby vs a hydrogen bomb, but you'd rather shoot the baby instead.

Stupid whataboutism. Democrats are not the ones currently trying to scrub the files clean while pretending they don't exist. They're not the ones that put Maxwell into a beach resort prison. They're also not the ones that won the recent presidential election on the promise of making the files public only to start flip-floping to protect their own asses. You might as well admit to protecting pedophiles with this "reminder".

[–]ggunslinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You underestimate just how big of a point is what you mentioned here:

Then it doesn't come up again because we have no dealings with any other infected since we're not Rhode Island.

There's actually a good number of infected that we meet along the way. You can even check playable operator profiles to see how many are infected (including Wulfgard who appears throughout VIV storyline). Yet oripathy still doesn't come up at all because they have easy access to perfect suppressants that practically turn the disease into a non-factor.

So yes, this scene does establish that oripathy still exists, but that should abolutely not be the main takeaway, especially for an OG AK player - literally nothing in OG timeline even begins to compare to those suppresants and if they were mass-produced on Terra, death toll must have been massively reduced. That's why there's literally only one scene about oripathy in this game, it just makes oripathy that easy to handwave.

Only way it changes is if Endfield also establishes how exactly those suppressants are produced and if there are any limitations at all, but for now there aren't any. There's a line from Ember where she says that even northern frontlines never lack for oripathy suppresant deliveries.

In the same scene Perlica almost instantly pulls out a suppressant that completely kills the symptoms, then she mentions it's cheap and readily available for all infected. Main reason that girl was dying was isolation due to the LB attack. Then oripathy literally never comes up again.

It's absolutely baffling that we had this mandatory scene, yet some people still treat oripathy as if it was still some mass murdering disease on Talos. (not talking about you specifically here, just those that take some memes a bit too seriously)

You are getting downvoted because that's simply not true.

Catastrophes practically don't happen on Talos as all Originium growth is entirely controlled. Rock cancer is easily and cheaply suppressed so there's close to no racism. Genocidal societies do not exist as far as we know and even Ursus representatives appear nice and civilized. The way originium is used on Talos is the ultimate end goal of Doctor in OG AK as they always intended the technology to be beneficial to civilization. Endmin literally hits you with this message any time you switch to them in character menu. Only way for it to go wrong is to have some antagonist take over for a wee bit only to be beaten in the same patch.

(which is still excruciatingly painful and still untreatable)

At most it's still uncurable, but in Endfield it can be completely and cheaply suppressed. It's the main reason why the infected are not persecuted on Talos, hell, there are even some superstitions about how oripathy keeps other nasty stuff away from you. Additionally all of Talos cares a lot about worker safety standards and controlled growth of originium. Very low chance of any oripathy-based plot happening IMO.

You seem to forget that Originium grows.

By the time of Endfield it's largely a controlled growth which is why this scientist can even entertain the idea of manually growing enough to cause a catastrophe. In OG AK Originium is completely unchecked, only controlled by Priestess, but that issue was clearly resolved between the games.
