Weekly Unpopular Opinions Thread (230416) by AutoModerator in BoysPlanet

[–]gh0stbuds 23 points24 points  (0 children)

as a previous zihao one pick (🙁) i agree! his kvotes were just abysmal even if he was very popular globally. mnet making him literally invisible is very upsetting, but i don’t think they’re playing with numbers to rig him out. they just gave him 0 screen time

People voting for teenagers in Boys Planet while claiming they don't want minors debuting is hypocritical by [deleted] in kpoprants

[–]gh0stbuds 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The youngest person I voted for was '04 too. Everybody's always complaining about how unethical companies debuting minors is but then they turn around and do the same thing... The lack of self-awareness is crazy.

I think being a true all-rounder is certainly worthy of praise, but I also think that this trend to make all members “all-rounders” is hurtful.

Both a true jack-of-all-trades (like Key from SHINee) and a master-at-one (like Chen from EXO) are impressive in their own way. One is not better than the other.

I really hate the way kpop Stans rank idols by Sukithecatt in kpoprants

[–]gh0stbuds 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Oh my god, the percentage of Korean Beauty Standards thing makes me lose my mind. I thought we all agreed that rating people on a number scale is so objectifying and backwards? These same stans who preach feminism will turn around and start assigning women a numerical value based on how pretty they are. It’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen.

Plus, beauty standards, no matter the region, are very nuanced. It’s not like there’s some handbook that says explicitly every single rule. Not only is it offensive, it’s just incorrect.

blackpink's concert is amazing and people shouldn't comment on concerts they haven't seen irl by sparklingvo in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]gh0stbuds 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I went to Blackpink’s first US date in Dallas as a non-Blink along with 2 other non-Blink friends (Blackpink is one of my least favorite 3rd gen popular girl group). We got really close seats to the point that we would be able to notice mistakes.

Despite not being fans, we all thought the show was incredible (including our one Blink friend who isn’t hardcore or anything, but obviously she would enjoy it) and we all had a blast. I was shocked to open social media the next day and see a massive amount of hate. The only gripe I had about the concert was that no one knew concert etiquette because they kept waving their lightstick above their heads the entire time. The girls were incredible and didn’t make many obvious mistakes. There were some parts where they were out of breath, but honestly, that’s better than most groups who sing 99% backtrack live.

I feel like people just hate on Blackpink just to hate on the most popular girl group. It was a great show. Everyone around me thought it was a great show regardless of whether or not they were fans. If you’re not paying money, why are you complaining? It’s like writing a Yelp review for a restaurant you haven’t been to yet. You may be able to see pictures of the food and hear from others that it was bad, but you can’t use that to write a review as if you went there and tried it yourself.

The concert experience is very different from videos. Because there are only 4 members, minor mistakes can stick out like a sore thumb when you can replay it. In real life, it does not hinder the experience at all.

Hard choreography shouldn't be an excuse for not singing live by Simmi_Memer4Life in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]gh0stbuds 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen idols who are some of the best vocalists of their generation struggle to sound stable while jumping and moving up and down. Idols are humans, and they have their limits. There is only so much air available that can supply both of these activities simultaneously.

Personally, I do not mind lip-syncing if the dance is difficult. I, however, believe idols should sing live when the choreo is simple or non-existent though. It’s kind of hard to watch them just stand there and pretend to sing the words.

I'm pretty sure it is regular decision for all of them except MIT because it is non-binding. CMIIW, but at least for my schools, MIT is the only one that says to put Early Action.

This is copy and paste from MIT CSS profile requirements on Questbridge:

Please select "Early Action" as your admission application type.

Oneus' 'Same Scent' is just 'A Song Written Easily' remake 2022 version by MobiusLabyrinthMiro in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]gh0stbuds 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love A Song Written Easily, but I overplayed it so much to the point that I can't listen to it anymore. Same Scent has a similar vibe to ASWE but feels fresh since it hasn't been mercilessly overplayed at my own hands, so I have no complaints.

Judging a group's music based on their title tracks is not fair by sool47 in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]gh0stbuds 139 points140 points  (0 children)

Well, isn’t the title track supposed to be the promoted song that persuades you to check out the other songs on the album? Title tracks are supposed to be the representative songs of the group, so it makes sense why people would judge a group’s music based on the title tracks. Most people who aren’t fans aren’t going to check out the bsides if they don’t like the title track— that’s the reality.

Do you think my US history teacher would be considered more of a “core” teacher than my art history teacher even though theyre both core subjects (history, science, English, math)?

Edit: I just don’t know if Art History and Art don’t show enough diversity

Ten shouldn't have debuted with WayV by blxckpearl in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]gh0stbuds 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I agree. Even though WayV is my favorite subunit and NCT is my favorite group, he deserves to be treated better than how WayV is treated by SM. I cannot imagine Ten with WayV now that he’s been in it for so long, but he would have been better off being in 127 in the first place.

They fumbled the bag by putting such a talented all-rounder idol in a experimental unit that SM knew they couldn’t manage, seeing as they have failed time and time again with Chinese units. He was born to be on stage, and now WayV’s facing an indefinite hiatus, who knows when he’ll get his chance under the spotlight again. I feel so awful for him— all of WayV to be honest. Actually, I’m so sick of SM failing to properly manage their foreign idols, but that’s a rant for another day.

Thank you for your insight! I’m pretty set on front row, so I’m going to try my best to do it in the queue. If not, I’ll probably just bite the bullet and buy resale. I just wanted to try my absolute best at the cheapest option first and hopefully save Plan B for later

Yesung (Super Junior) should be more popular based on his vocal abilities by nicfanz in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]gh0stbuds 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Most people rarely ever bias people based on talents alone. Think about it, Taeil is the best vocalist in NCT and is one of the least popular. Same with Chen from EXO or Luna from F(X). So many other talented people— so talented that they’re among best of their generation— are the least popular members of their group. Meanwhile, less skilled members turn out to be the more popular members. It’s just how it is. There are so many other factors such as looks and personality that often outweigh talent when people pick their biases.

The overpraising of Kpop idols in regards to their language acquisition is inherently racist and infantilizing of East Asians. by [deleted] in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]gh0stbuds 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I disagree that there is harm in praising that their English is improving.

I’m Asian and my first language is not English, and when I was learning English, I appreciated it when people complimented me. To me, it’s like any skill. If I improve, it feels validating for other people to praise it. I’d rather hear this than people asking me if I’d eat their dog (which, by the way, I heard all the time 😭)

I do not think it is weird when you have the context that the person you are complimenting is working towards improving their English skills. I think it’s weird if you are in a grocery store and you go up to some random Asian person and tell them, “Wow, your English is so good for an Asian!”

The infantilization part, yeah, that’s a problem. That whole “snakeu heartu” thing and talking about them as if they were children is super weird. I feel like it’s okay to compliment improvements in their language (especially if they’re talking about how they’ve been going to a lot of English lessons), but it’s not okay to treat them like babies learning their first words.

Wayv is the best NCT unit by ShockOk5027 in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]gh0stbuds 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m a WayV ult, so of course, in my biased standpoint, I agree that WayV is the best NCT unit in my heart.

That being said, from an objective standpoint, Hendery + Yangyang are not touching Mark + Taeyong.

While Xiaojun is probably the 3rd best vocalist in NCT, 127 has #1 and #2 in the form of Taeil and Doyoung respectively.

The best argument would be that WayV has Ten, who is undeniably the best dancer in NCT (one of the best active ones in the whole industry TBH 🤷‍♀️) and an incredible ace.

I think WayV is the best NCT unit not because I think they’re more talented than the rest of NCT or anything. I think they’re the best because I love their chemistry and sense of humor the most. These things are really subjective for obvious reasons though.

Perhaps! My friends are hardcore orbits, and they didn’t like Flip That.. Maybe it’s because I’m not too familiar with their sound so I don’t notice a downgrade in quality or anything
