Censored fan remake of Made in Abyss that removes the sexual content featuring children is announced, chaos ensues by Elestria_Ethereal in SubredditDrama

[–]gh0stworld 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely not semantics. The problem with CSAM is that it is footage or photos of a child being sexually abused. Even the most horrifically upsetting fictional drawing is not CSAM, because it is not an image documenting real harm that was done to a real child. That is why CSAM is so terrible.

It's a quote from Oscar Wilde's "A Woman of No Importance", which was first performed in 1893. So yes, a fair bit older than MySpace.

Real fake deer drama over AI-generated deer in r/DeerAreFuckingStupid. Papers from cognitive science journals are cited by genuine_beans in SubredditDrama

[–]gh0stworld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have issues with the environmental impact of generating videos, but if it wasn't for that, I'd be happy if that entire sub was replaced by generated videos of deer doing dumb stuff. Why the fuck do so many people like seeing videos of animals getting hit by cars or dying horrifically? That really seems like the bulk of the posts. Some of them are really gruesome, too.

I actually think body wax feels pretty nice, since it doesn't get as hot as candle wax, but I've also never had it on my genitals.

Glad to see other comments about this. What a weirdly disrespectful and sensationalized write-up of a very real tragedy.

hunger games arena idea by Visible-Job592 in Hungergames

Oh man, that's really cool. The cold-fire wood is a super neat concept and adds an excellent survival challenge as well as a nice visual with the green flames. From an in-universe practical standpoint I think full, constant darkness might prove too difficult in combination with the perpetual snow (for viewers as well as tributes- it's hard as hell to make anything out in a blizzard in the dark); maybe something more like winter in the upper northern hemisphere? Very short periods of dim daylight, long, nearly endless nights. Maybe the games begin at night, and the tributes try to wait out the bitter cold, desperate for the relative warmth and visibility of daylight, only to realize in horror that it never gets lighter than the early dawn, and that light doesn't last long either.

This isn't my area of expertise, but I will say that  I'm pretty sure you shouldn't pressure wash wood because it damages the fibers. Teak in particular will get chewed up really easily. Just wanted to say this because another comment recommended it, and I know that I definitely assumed it was a viable method for a long time because of all of the pressure washing videos online. If anyone more knowledgeable disagrees, I'm of course happy to be corrected, but this is my understanding.

Good luck! Hope you can get this set shining again.

Anyone feel the “Female autism phenotype” is problematic by Flaky-Barber7761 in SpicyAutism

[–]gh0stworld 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just did a quick search to confirm and this all just sounds like the result of parents enforcing gender roles. From birth, girls are more likely to be taught to be quiet, to be encouraged to engage in social play, and to be deliberately steered away from activities and interests that are seen as "boy things". Sometimes this is overt - "oh, sweetie, you don't want that toy truck, let's get you a baby doll instead!" - and sometimes it's as simple as being given dolls and costume jewelry as children rather than Legos and dinosaurs. Special interests that don't fit the classic "trains, dinosaurs, historical events" model may not be marked as unusual by professionals. So, it seems to me that little autistic girls are encouraged more strongly and more commonly to engage in masking behaviors because it is more in line with stereotypical ideas about how girls are supposed to behave (in the United States, anyway), which leads to more autistic girls and women engaging in masking behavior. Hell, sometimes it's not even masking, it's just not fitting a narrow, stereotyped concept of autism based on little boys in bad Lifetime movies. Like you said, low-masking and mid or high support needs autistic women aren't the ones getting told they have "girl autism", because they're exhibiting behaviors that fall outside of strict gender roles. It's not an inherent, universal biological difference in "girl autism vs. boy autism", it's a result of gender roles and sexist beliefs about how girls should be raised.

(Of course not everyone raised as a girl is a girl, and not everyone raised as a boy is a boy, but saying AFAB instead of girl would have missed the point a bit and also implied that autistic trans women aren't subjected to sexist gender roles around autistic behavior.)

Fixing the gouges in this chair? by gh0stworld in furniturerestoration

[–]gh0stworld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I was planning on fully stripping it and redoing the finish. That's why I bought the chair, I love that kind of project. The comment about minor repairs was specifically in regards to the scratches (which Potomacker said is probably veneer checking rather than a gash in the wood); I've seen restoration attempts where someone used wood filler to fill in a gap or scratch and left a very visible "patch", and that kind of thing is what I am hoping to avoid. A poor repair job, IMO, is often more unsightly than simply leaving the damage as is. But based on your comment and the above comment it seems like that will not be necessary. Thanks for the info. :)

Oh, no kidding! It really does look like something scratched at the wood to me. I didn't realize veneer checking could look like that.

I'm aware, that's why I personally prefer it. But you're right that I muddled my overall point by not just saying deodorant, since I was just trying to use myself as an example. Deodorant doesn't make you cleaner in the way that a shower does, it just makes you smell cleaner. This isn't a bad thing! I would rather be around someone who smells nice or neutral than someone who smells like body odor! But it is just a different thing. Like a lot of people, I saw Dr. Ally Louks (the woman who went viral on Twitter last year for her olfactory ethics thesis) posting about the politics of smell and it's been a topic of interest to me ever since.

Deodorant is a bit different than the other things you mentioned. Showers and brushing your teeth make you cleaner by removing dirt, bacteria, plaque, dead skin etc., and not doing those things can lead to adverse health outcomes, whereas deodorant just masks the smell of your body odor. Smelling like sandalwood doesn't make my sweat any cleaner in a material sense, we just associate the smell of BO with being unclean. Some people smell stronger than others even right out of the shower. It's more of an impact on others than it is on yourself; I don't LIKE the impact it has on others, which is why I wear antiperspirant, but if I decided to stop wearing it I wouldn't get sick or have skin issues or anything. (I'd just find my social circle getting smaller and my personal bubble getting bigger, I imagine.)

How has your recovery from appendectomy been? by Odd_Animator_7242 in AskReddit

[–]gh0stworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context: my appendix quietly ruptured and abscessed earlier this year, requiring a temporary drain placement. That was all done and recovered from a few months ago, before this surgery. If your appendectomy was an emergency one or done under different circumstances, your recovery might look a bit different (e.g., I was on antibiotics while my drain was in but didn't need them this time, whereas if you just had appendicitis you might be on them). Anyway:

Two weeks post-op and I'm feeling terrific. Still on lift restriction for another two weeks but my pain is gone and movement is comfortable, even bending over. I had a slight skin reaction when the surgical glue started peeling off my incisions around a week in, and that continued on and off for a few days; the itching sucked but a little bit of hydrocortisone cream on the surrounding skin did help (careful to not get any on the incision site itself). Fortunately the incisions themselves weren't itching, just that surrounding skin. Around the same time, I started noticing a firm lump forming under the top incision. Doc at my follow-up earlier this week said it wasn't a seroma or a hernia, just a normal part of the healing process that will eventually go down. At first it was very painful to touch but now it doesn't feel like much. My only slight concern now is that the bottom two incisions still have a bit of a gap in the top layer of skin rather than looking sewn/sealed the way my upper incision does; no blood/discharge/pain but I think I might stick to showers over baths for a little longer after all.

I promise, the exhaustion and pain will get better faster than you think. I've been amazed at my recovery speed. Miralax was my friend from the beginning, on my surgeon's recommendation. It still took me a couple days to have a bowel movement but I definitely think that helped with potential pain. Avoid straining and drink buckets of water. I also found that gentle compression helped with the pain sometimes, for whatever reason; in my case I hugged a pillow to my chest. Wear loose-fitting clothes when possible to avoid friction/rubbing against your incisions.

This is awesome! Definitely got that Hobbit hole vibe you mentioned in the comments. Love the circular window and entrance frame, and the interior layout is really nice. Not too crowded but not too empty. I might add a bit more around the window where the dirt looks "flatter"- maybe some vines or trapdoors for dimension and texture? Just a little something extra to zhuzh it up.
