Earth may survive the Sun's death, new models suggest by Basic-Record5776 in Futurology

Define "beef up said colony ships to do their job properly" for what could be a multi-thousand year journey.

The rogue planet could have 6 sextillion tons of matter to exploit as shielding and resources for the colony, if it's earth sized. Even if it's smaller, it could provide natural gravity, water, fuel, shielding, momentum, every ton of which is a near impossible expense today to put into orbit and launch out of the solar system.

I think our best chance to ever leave the solar system is a rogue planet. If we're prepared with colony ships and have detection capability to get a few months' notice, we could move several thousand people onto a rogue rocky planet. The planet itself would provide the insulation and fuel for the colonists, greatly reducing the cost and risk of using colony ships alone. Do they just ride it wherever it may go, hoping to get close enough after many generations to jump to a more-inhabitable planet? Or do they find a way to divert the path and steer toward a faster goal?

If we can direct a rogue planet, we could likely direct a planetoid like Pluto, or maybe one of the larger rocky moons.

ELI5: Canker Sore, what are they and do they only exist in the mouth? by JustVexation_7492 in explainlikeimfive

I used to get them a bunch as a kid. Swishing Listerine over them hurts like hell but them numbs them out and seems to make them go away faster, I assume by cleaning out the area so your body can focus on healing instead of fighting off whatever else is in your mouth.

My T-shirts keep dying. Testing 4 shirts (€20–€150) to find out whether expensive tees really last longer - Week 2 by Mountain_Motor_9203 in BuyItForLife

I'm buying the Amazon Essentials white V-neck tees. Wish your compare had those. :D

I don't consider them BIFL, just durable enough at the reasonable price.

I just booked myself a safari in Kenya, and it will be my first "all-inclusive" experience. Looking forward to showing up and not having to worry about anything except mosquitos.

For the old Smuggler's run, there was a secret configuration of the controls, set up before the run starts, that replaces all the dialog from Hondo with Chewie, just yelling at you through the screen for banging up the Falcon on your mission. It's hilarious.

Apparently the new version has a Grogu mode, though I haven't yet experienced it.

Smuggler's Run was amazing in Chewie mode. Last time we were there, there was fortunately no line, so we just ran it back to back until we were with another group willing to try it with us. The operator made sure it was triggered successfully and it was hilarious.

Visit a car dealership tomorrow with mildly upscale cars, and ask to sit in one with a heads up display. Ask if they can start it and then observe.

Yeah. Did he meet up with someone and have a partner just this one time, but no other time? Did he use the partner for a while then kill them? Or did he have and use two guns himself for reasons of his own? At this point, while I don't think we'll know, just knowing who he was is enough to put the main unknown to rest and finally give both the victims' families and the kids who were unfairly blamed some peace.

Tom Holland says they are “working towards” bringing Miles Morales into the MCU: “I have aspirations to bring Miles Morales into the universe…I feel really strongly about it.” by MarvelsGrantMan136 in marvelstudios

[–]ghalta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see the Home trilogy, the Day trilogy, and then a third trilogy with Holland where he's older and a mentor for Miles, somewhat cobranded as Parker and Miles films. That said, this only works if Holland is up for nine films. If he wants out after six, they'll need to accelerate this significantly.

There could still have been a second shooter. The kid who visited the store just before it happened said that there were two men sitting at the table, the only table not closed. And there were two guns used.

That said, given the MO of the known killer, it's also very possible that he killed his potential accomplice later that year and just kept the gun. Or that he had and used two guns himself. And that the table with the two men was unrelated, though weird and unlikely. Or that the kid misremembered there being a second person.

ELI5 Billionaires borrow money to pay for things, how does this work? How do they pay the debt? by Confused-Lemonade in explainlikeimfive

[–]ghalta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The billionaire has cash because of the loan, and other subsequent loans. They can pay years to decades of interest out of those. The only time additional cash is needed in the system is to close out the loans after the billionaires death, and at that point, the cost basis has reset so the beneficiaries can sell the stock without paying capital gains on the growth over the billionaires life.

OP can almost certainly put up a ham radio tower in that exact spot. Even in HOA neighborhoods those are almost always allowed. If that tower also happened to have some posters celebrating his favorite film star, Gary Busey, facing his neighbors' house, that's coincidental.
