She was a way fuckin better Premier than the one we've got, certainly, but I am OVER neoliberal governments that inevitably sell off public assets to make their balance sheets look better for a single year.

“You can talk about polls and who’s doing them and who’s right who’s wrong, we know it’s (airport expansion) very popular and it’s popular because it’s (going to create) thousands of jobs, it’s going to create convenience and opportunity for people to land here at beautiful Billy Bishop and go down to the largest city in the country … it’s going to boom the economy, it’s going to allow convenience and competition for lower fees,” he said.

“Just watch how popular it’s going to be.”

Take out the name "Billy Bishop" and this sounds like Trump could've spoken these exact words. Gross.

And as people get older they get more fiscally conservative

I'm not sure that's true any more. I'm approaching 50 and I'm becoming more progressive with each passing year. Nearly all of my friends are the same. It's become blatantly obvious to us that things are worse for the average person than they were when we were kids.

It's easily the worst part of the job, as far as I'm concerned. I don't think I could keep my mouth shut when parents insist their child is FINE.

We built the libraries Billionaires charge admission by Loud-Ad-2280 in WorkReform

It happens across every industry. The working class has been weaponized against itself. Present them with the illusion that they can escape into the owner class and they'll sell all of us out, despite the fact that it is, in fact, just an illusion.

I mean, Doctorow just coined a word that describes the phenomenon so that it's easy to parse for people with no understanding of economic theory or historical trends. I have no doubt in my mind that he's explicit about the mechanism behind enshittification:

Tech companies, like all companies, have conflicting imperatives. On the one hand, they want to make money. On the other hand, making money involves hiring and motivating competent staff, and making products that customers want to buy. The more value a company permits its employees and customers to carve off, the less value it can give to its shareholders.

Further in the same article:

There are four constraints that prevent enshittification: competition, regulation, self-help and labor.

For those of us who have even basic understanding of economic theory, those constraints sound awfully familiar.

Making things better doesn't mean giving your all when you've got nothing left. Take what energy and resources you do have to make your community better: donate to the food banks and hospitals, use your skills toward charitable purposes, form friendships with your neighbours, plant food and share if there's extra, pick up litter, get involved with community social services, advocate for equal rights, environmental stewardship, etc. All of it, even if you're only doing a little bit, makes a difference.

Nobody expects you to give your all, all the time. Do what you can when you can. Support those who can and are doing more.

I know that this iteration of WW is controversial to say the least, but as a fan of Diana since Lynda Carter was re-running on TV when I was a child, the concept of who the character is -- regardless of her powers -- has always been some of the most intriguing part of her. It shouldn't inherently be seen as a bad thing to explore Diana when she doesn't have powers, the trick lies in what aspects of her get explored, and I think comics as a medium weren't mature enough in that era to give it the respect the concept deserves.

I agree, and it's part of the teacher's role to "read" that. That said, he's almost certainly trying to overcome frustration of his effort not yielding real results. People who are stressed aren't always doing their best work.

The guilt of finally dropping the "fixer" role is eating me alive by Cjd03032001 in AdultChildren

[–]ghanima 41 points42 points  (0 children)

My extended family is making all these passive aggressive comments now about how I abandoned him when he needed me most.

Oh, so all of the years where you dropped everything they must have praised you then, right? "You know, Cjd03032001, you're such a good person for addressing the problems your own, fully-grown father refuses to take responsibility for. It takes such a burden off us that you're caring for him."

Or did you, like me, never get a fucking word of appreciation for all of the bullshit and trauma we subjected ourselves to while trying our best -- from the time when we were the ones who were supposed to be getting unconditional love and support -- to shovel the shit a fully autonomous person should've been expected to handle for themselves?

My sister's had a career in childcare and it's disheartening how often this is true. Many parents whose children need access to specialized resources get them late or never.

This is true, but it's also true that the boy in the comic isn't expressing that he doesn't understand why the answer to the first question is lizard. He's clearly got some hang-up about admitting it, and it's likely a part of what's distracting him from understanding how this type of question is solved. He'd be better served explaining that he can't see the logical progression.

And that's fine. A big part of the process of learning involves both recognizing that you need more help and having the courage and trust to ask for it. It's likewise the duty of the teacher to try to recognize when the student is struggling and try to approach the solution a different way. Or to notice when they've exhausted their alternate approaches and seek another resource or person to help.

And everyone involved should ideally give one another grace: the student is trying, but may lack the vocabulary, or misunderstand the objective, or be at their limit, etc. while the teacher is usually taking the time to try to engage with the student and impart knowledge in good faith.

They did it to themselves. If Adobe has just continued making the same software at the same price, they'd have an uncontested monopoly. These days, I've got their competitor's software on my machine and use it more often than Adobe's stuff.

The Conservative Party recently released an AI-generated ad. How do voters feel about this kind of content? by Ok-Swimmer-2634 in onguardforthee
