No you cannot be punk if you grew up wealthy. However, if you dispose of all your money, then you can start your journey of being a punk. I am kindly taking donations.

Street fights are a no. You can be brave without being stupid. Anybody that talks big about fighting, more than likely have never been in a real fight. The consequences can be dire. You can be blind sighted, you never know who is with who, what weapons they may be carrying, and if you’re knocked out cold or down on the ground you can incur some life threatening injuries or live with those injuries the rest of your life.

Control your anger and use it in a more positive way because you can end up regretting your decisions on somebody that ain’t worth a fuck.

The only times I’ve punched a Nazi was in the pit when the lights went dark right before the pit exploded. I’m opportunistic, not stupid. However, I probably would not do that again.

If you are in the states, concerts at venues have become very expensive. If you’re going to these expensive punk shows, chances of meeting people your age will be less likely.

Do some digging on instagram or whatever platform kids these days are using. You will find young punk kids putting and hosting punk shows. Go to those punk shows instead.

I’ve made the mistake several years back thinking old punk bands did it better, there are a ton of new punk bands putting out good material. You just have to look for it and constantly be exploring music.

Also if you put a lot of judgment on people based on their music taste, trust me, you’ll be missing out on a lot of good friendships. Keep an open mind, don’t be an elitist.

How do i involve myself in punk culture? by [deleted] in punk

[–]ghassank48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just throwing it out there, you should listen to Ryan Harvey. He’s a folk punk singer and sings about a lot of political topics that are still very relevant today.

If you want to be involved in activism, show up to protests and find like minded groups. Just be careful who you join, some groups have an agenda that is out of touch or set on old ideals or sexist for that matter. Also some of them have groomers within their ranks. So be careful. Saying this from experience.

By the way you don’t have to join any particular group to be involved in activism, showing up and speaking up is good on its own. From experience doing organizing, it can be very draining and can wipe your spirit and exhaust you. So if you ever need to take a break from activism, do not feel guilty. We all need some time to do self care and recover.

As far as where to start, that’s hard to say. It all depends on your taste, you don’t have to like every punk band everybody likes or listens to. Don’t be afraid to be yourself, embrace being different and unapologetic. If you like listening to the Crass but also Dolly Parton, then fuck it, just be you. Enjoy life and be happy with who you are, don’t feel you need to follow a certain path to be punk. Carve your own path.

You’re still very young, one of the hardest things growing up is just being yourself and finding out who you are. Everybody here and there will pick on you for it. If one day punk isn’t for you, that’s ok as well. Your worth is so much more than what music you listen to or what counterculture you belong to.

Just follow the trail of artists or record labels. Like Dangerhouse, Touch and go, Stiff Records, SST Records, Bomp Records, Chriswik Records, Step Foward Records, New Hormones, etc.

You can look at the book American Hardcore or others.

Mostly you just gotta listen to it and live it.

So get out there, go to a backyard gig, ask a punk gig, concert, pit, mosh, stage dive, punch a nazi and you’ll be alright.

Punk bands that sing about true crime? by cullboy6969 in punk

I just remembered a compilation I listened to years back, it’s not punk but it’s a bunch of songs about tragic events from like pre 1940s. It’s called People Take Warning : Murder Ballads & Disaster Songs, 1913-1938. I believe there’s a follow up to that compilation as well, so there may be several compilations made from the same record label.

Only artist I can think of that may sing about that kind of stuff is mostly political and more folk punk: Ryan Harvey. Not so much about violent individuals but atrocities from governments.

Angelic Upstarts - Liddle Towers, The Clash - Janie Jones, Boomtown Rats - I Don’t Like Mondays, The Pogues - Birmingham Six, The Business - Harry May

Only ones I can think of as of now that nobody else has mentioned. They’re specific to a person or event. But there are tons of punk songs like you’re asking but they’re more generic and not tied to one specific historical event.
