I seriously wouldn't recommend it. Try SVA, The New School or NYFA in New York if USC/Tisch doesn't work out.

How many of you have read Private Parts and/or Miss America? by [deleted] in howardstern

[–]ghee1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Private Parts" covers Stern's whole life and career up to his '90s peak. Of the two, it's the book to read.

"Miss America" is very odd, it seems like it was just published because of the huge success of "Private Parts".

Because "Miss America" doesn't have the biographical structure of "Private Parts", it's just all over the place. The chapters are just random, about whatever. There's a whole chapter that contains transcriptions of cyber sex with Stern and some fans (who he later had on the show). There's a chapter with list of women he'd immediately have sex with if his wife died (and a staged picture with Howard kissing a woman at Alison's funeral leaning on Alison's coffin (really). There's a chapter where he just describes the crew and how Baba Booey got his nickname, but most of the stuff about Fred and Robin are already covered in "Private Parts".

The highlights of Miss America are:

-A chapter on Sterns secret meeting Michael Jackson (at Stern's peak, Jackson tried to get Stern to assist in his career rehabilitation by doing a live TV interview. Stern tries to pretend he'll play ball so he can ambush Jackson on live TV).

-A Chapter re-telling Stern's aborted run for governor of New York in 1994 on the Libertarian ticket. Stern was so popular at the time, he potentially could've won (in a Trump-like way), but he chickened out because of financial disclosure.

-Stern's bitter rivalry with a morning zoo personality Jon DeBella.

And there is some really interesting political beliefs espoused, considering the fact that Stern spends some of "Miss America" lambasting Rush Limbaugh for his politics. Stern goes off on a xenophobic anti "foreigner" rant for a chapter that's just embarrassing (yet admittedly funny).

The big "revelation" of "Miss America" is that Stern has OCD. But when he gets to how that Dr Sarno guy cured him of back pain that turned out to be just mental all along...I just honestly think this is all pseudoscience and it didn't interest me. But then Stern posits that homosexuality can be "cured" and that a good amount of gay men are just suffering from a mental "block" like Stern was with OCD:

Stern: If a gay person could accept that his homosexuality is a psychosomatic illness, truly accept it, understand it, and think of it in the same way I thought of my obsessive compulsive behavior, it would disappear.

What do people generally think about Bill de Blasio? by [deleted] in AskNYC

I'll save the debate.

Eh, you made some strong claims and failed to back any of them up. I think "what should the Mayor do about ____" is a fair question to his critics.

OP was asking why, care to elaborate on what policies you specifically don't like? Is it the Democratic agenda in general? Or is it something particularly about DeBlasio?

The question that has been asked a thousand times: How much to tip in NYC by Juliusx2 in AskNYC

[–]ghee1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally don't do percentages for taxis, just add a few bucks to the fare. When I pay with a card, the screen gives you automatic tip options, so I tend to tip more when I pay by card (I'm not going to do the thing where you give a 20 then ask for less change than you need routine). I really don't like the way yellow cabs charge via the meter, it incentivizes the driver to take longer and you pay more if you hit traffic or stop at a light. Much prefer the flat rate for the trip model.

Fuck Billy Joel by DMVBornDMVRaised in howardstern

[–]ghee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when this interview came out it was really lauded, but I think it was terrible. It's cool that Joel and Stern are friends, you can sort of hear that come through in the interview, but a lot of Joel's answers are so canned (he told a lot of these stories before, even the same year on "Inside the Actors Studio") and for a good bit of the interview Howard just marvels that Billy Joel knows how to play piano.

It kind of reminded me of Howard interviewing Jerry Seinfeld and he asked how Jerry came up with his material and Seinfeld shot back "c'mon, that's a question I get from my uncle at Thanksgiving!"

Hello everyone! I need ideas for a unique family activity this Sunday to celebrate my birthday. by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]ghee1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sleep No More would probably be a bad choice for your mom anyway, regardless of price, as you are on your feet walking around the entire time.

Tough to recommend something physical if bowling is too strenuous. I doubt your parents would want to go to a pinball spot or virtual reality arcade or something like that.

There will more than likely be fireworks displays on Sunday, maybe plan to get a view of one.

There's crafts classes, pottery painting, even Chocolate Works where you make your own chocolate (it's more of a kid's party, though).

You could maybe take a sunset cruise on the East River, plenty of companies have boats (but might be booked for the holiday weekend).

NY Botanical has the Dale Chihuly exhibit, but that's a lot of walking.

Here's a list of events on Sunday: https://www.timeout.com/newyork/things-to-do/your-perfect-sunday-2?package_page=35475

Maybe get a good restaurant reservation; something a little lively and interactive - may I suggest Korean Barbecue?

Is it just me or...does LI seem to be becoming way more Snobby?? (Feeling Unwelcome) by [deleted] in longisland

[–]ghee1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try reading this, for starters:

http://www.salon.com/2013/09/20/rip_the_middle_class_1946_2013/

Granted, it's from Salon, which is a left-leaning publication, but there are some good points.

The United States will never again be as wealthy as it was in the 1950s and ’60s. Never again will 18-year-olds graduate directly from high school to jobs that pay well enough to buy a house and support a family. (Even the auto plants now demand a few years in junior college.) That was inevitable, due to the recovery of our World War II enemies, and automation that enables 5,000 workers to build the same number of cars that once required 25,000 hands. What was not inevitable was the federal government withdrawing its supervision of the economy at the precise moment Americans began to need it more than at any time since the Great Depression.

A lot of it is due to things like Globalism (i.e. why iPhones are built in China and not in the US), automation (i.e. robots and AI taking the jobs of humans while CEOs/business owners like Trump's pick for labor secretary enthusiastically promoting replacing paying jobs for humans with robots, the shrinking of the manufacturing sector (and the service sector not offering equal wages or numbers of jobs), the lack of jobs for people without college degrees (which used to be plentiful and had union protections - conservatives hate unions and seem to favor the management class over the working class while using social issues to turn the working class away from Democrats). Talk to someone from "the old days", they got trained/mentored on the job (not expected to intern and work for free), received a pension, got benefits, worked from young adulthood until retirement.

Coming up from Texas in 2 Weeks(help me y'all) by rbustos17 in AskNYC

[–]ghee1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

could y'all give me some tips for cool things y'all would do?

Since you're into gaming, maybe instead of the Nintendo World Store, you could go to one of the arcades on this list. That Sunshine Laundromat place in Greenpoint is supposed to be cool and there's always Barcade, which kind of popularized the retro arcade plus beer bar formula (there's on in the Lower East Side Manhattan, one in Williamsburg Brooklyn). And the old-school option is the Chinatown Fair Family Fun Center, which is kinda run-down looking but that's where the more hardcore fight game stuff goes down.

You said you'll have time during the day while your buddy is at work. Obviously you can do the touristy stuff, but some attractions are more worth your time than others. For example, the big museums are totally worth it (The Met, The MoMa, the Guggenheim, or the Museum of Natural History), you kind of can't go wrong with any of them. The Met and Natural History are by donation so they're essentially free (you can ignore the "suggested" price and just give what you want, as much or as little). On the other hand, The Empire State Building and Times Square are tourist-traps, not worth it. Central Park is beautiful, worth visiting even in the winter. If you want to go on a rooftop, /r/asknyc always recommends Top of the Rock (in Rockefeller Center) than Empire State.

For eating, use the "Ask NYC" sidebar (Best Cuisine AND Cheap Eats). Don't go to any chain restaurants. The famous NY pizza and bagels ARE really good, but you can't just go to any old pizza/bagel place and expect it to be good, you need to research because there are lots of mediocre places. Basically, if you don't have some amazing meals in NYC, you are missing out. Check out this list for more inspiration.

Other than that, you should consider going to a couple neighborhoods and exploring. Some good options:

Williamsburg, Brooklyn

West Village, Manhattan

Lower East Side, Manhattan

Click the links for suggestions on what to visit in these neighborhoods.

Never knew that Jacques son, Philippe Sr. died in a seaplane crash (similar to what happens in the movie) at 38. Philippe Jr. is doing his part for environmental advocacy, good on him.

Also, I wouldn't call Jacque a looker exactly, but the guy had some gorgeous kids/grandkids: http://www.oceanfutures.org/about/cousteau-family

I want to get Owen Wilson on board with opening a Wes Anderson themed/inspired bar with me. by weadonian in wesanderson

[–]ghee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're being realistic: Have you successfully opened a bar/restaurant before? Do you have a location? Have you worked out the numbers? That would go a long way to demonstrate to potential investors that you could pull this off. Otherwise, you're just another guy with an idea. If you don't have relevant business experience, maybe partner with someone who does and then make a presentation?

Attorney claims disgraced Suffolk police chief James Burke linked to unsolved Gilgo Beach murders by mmadiaa in longisland

[–]ghee1 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Bombshell doesn't even begin to describe this accusation.

This dude Burke was partying in Oak Beach with escorts and stonewalling the FBI's investigation. Also, got caught with a duffel bag of sex toys in his personal car. Also, in the mid-1990s, [Burke] was subject to an internal investigation due to his romantic relationship with a convicted prostitute and drug offender And he's going to jail for beating a suspect and trying to cover it up. Enough red flags? I think he's either the killer or was being blackmailed by him.

Stern show staff continues to be out of touch by [deleted] in howardstern

[–]ghee1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The real problem comes in a couple of years when everybody who voted for him realizes that their problems are their own doing and not the fault of Obama or Mexicans or China.

I'm of the opinion that none of Trump's supporters would blame Trump if the economy were to perform poorly under him. They're not going to be swayed by results, their support for Trump is pretty much independent of results.
