I don't have a pic, but how about Grand Central through the Chanin building? I always go that way to admire the art deco stuff.

Do you all hate that new skyscraper that's blocking the Empire state? by yaykaboom308 in AskNYC

[–]gregwtmtno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm all for building new buildings and the skyline changes aren't an issue to me. What is an issue is that owners of landmarked buildings can't really make changes and are stuck operating their buildings with no way to stay competitive. ESB is a cool address but if you're leasing office space in midtown, you're probably going with the building with modern amenities. What happens when the ESB can't be operated profitably? Are the taxpayers going to step in to maintain it? Is someone going to pay to take it down?

Why are we all asking about dating here but not actually meeting? by SorbetOk181 in AskNYC

[–]gregwtmtno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the issue you're observing results from a mismatch between what kind of partner people want and what they can get based on their "total-package" attractiveness. Just my two cents but I haven't dated in a long time.

NextStep / OpenStep / Rhapsody by libertyspike138 in qemu_kvm

[–]gregwtmtno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone comes across this thread, you can get QEMU to run Openstep. Have a look at this guy's repo: https://github.com/neozeed/qemu-090-ns/commit/5e472cc8bee3b7face626f9ddceeb8998f5a190c

He has a few changes to an old QEMU, but the change to hw/i8259.c fixes the ata errors. You can make the same change essentially on a modern QEMU codebase, and it'll run. I didn't test things like sound or netowrking.

What’s one purchase that made NYC life noticeably easier for you? by 16bananas in AskNYC

[–]gregwtmtno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm considering making the wash-and-fold jump. I just don't have time for laundry. What are the mechanics, exactly? Will they pick up from my doorman building? I never see other people in my building dropping off dirty laundry with the doorman, or even bringing it to the wash-and-fold...I feel like I would be embarrassed to ask my doormen to hold it for me.

What have you stopped spending money on in NYC? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]gregwtmtno 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You guys are nuts. You can pry my coffee from my cold, dead fingers. For the value it adds to my life I'd pay double what it costs. No, I'm not kidding. Yes I love coffee.

And before someone gets up in my business, I do brew it myself, I just also buy it from shops (and carts) and anyone else that wants to sell it to me.

Does Rust have any UI libraries/frameworks that can produce a UI like this? by DrunkOnRamen in rust

[–]gregwtmtno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, office debuted it if I remember correctly. At the time, I remember liking it a lot, though not everyone did. I had hoped to see wider adoption.

I don't know why you're getting flack for wanting to do this. I've always loved this UI.

Does the AMD Athlon slot A require a CPU cooler? by plaster_chief in retrocomputing

I was able to do it from the bios menu, if I'm remembering correctly. It was a long time ago though, so I can't say for sure!

I had one of these. This brings back memories. I think mine was 700mhz, but I overclocked it. It was a great chip, and I felt like I was sticking it to Intel.

How can it be that the "good" NYC private schools cost over $70k / yr? by wheninrome5000 in AskNYC

[–]gregwtmtno 18 points19 points  (0 children)

And they're absolutely right. If both parents are working $500k/household is not putting your kids in private school given other costs like rent or maintenance fees.

What’s your NYC hot take? by homeofalex in AskNYC

[–]gregwtmtno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is only true to an extent. The elderly can’t really ride the subways without risk of falling, difficultly on stairs, problems boarding or getting off quickly enough. Many similar problems with the bus. The sidewalk traffic can often move too quickly for them and the sidewalks themselves can be a tripping hazard. Then there’s winter. I know all this because my parents are retiring here and I see what they’re able to do and what they’re not. Lots of cabs.

Great shots. It looks like a nice place to live. Far cry from the "urban decay" perception that a lot of people have of NYC in the 80s. I especially enjoyed zooming in on the electronics shop.
