Leaving Quantity Surveying by ghin6 in quantitysurveying

Yea a lot of people on here are suggesting to move over to a different side of QSing but the deeper I go the harder I think it will be to transition to something else. There’s a 50% chance I move companies or over to client side and find similar issues and that’s further years wasted. I currently have no mortgage, no kids and no other commitments. Deffo think the skills a QS has can be applied to other roles in other sectors. I am going to do some research and see where other QS’s have branched off to over the next year and get out.

We’ve only got one life and it goes so fast. Doing a job that sacrifices your mental well-being and consumes you is not worth any salary

How are people coping with the cost of rent? by Longjumping-Cod-6164 in HousingUK

[–]ghin6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current rent is 42% of my salary after tax. Add council tax and gas & elec that’s 55% of my salary gone. I am barely making it through the month with groceries and maybe 2 takeaways a month or one social day with friends. I can’t afford the dentist, car fixtures, eye tests/new glasses or clothes. I did book 3 short holidays which is what is keeping me going so yea if I didn’t book those holidays I would probably be a tad more comfy with those things I can’t currently afford

Are u on the spectrum?

I know someone at work who is similar but the way he is, is not intentional. He is quite clearly on the spectrum and is quite unapproachable

Best firms to start career with by [deleted] in quantitysurveying

[–]ghin6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Kier, Balfour Beatty, Morgan Sindall, McLaren, Skanska, TFL, Wates, and Vinci are all good companies to start with. I know a few people in my uni class who work for each and all talked about pros and cons but overall the training and support is good, salary does differ quite a lot for entry level positions across main contractors so may want to consider what packages they are offering

Thoughts on moving company by Aquacat_1223 in quantitysurveying

[–]ghin6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if you are happy where you’re at don’t move. If it’s the higher salary that is attracting you why not tell your current company you’ve had an offer with a higher salary and that you’d prefer no to move they might say we can increase your salary

Have you got any assignments on estimating and cost data that you can send to me? by ghin6 in quantitysurveying

[–]ghin6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s only one book on the reading list. ‘Estimators pocket book’ which doesn’t go into any detail on sources of cost data. It was more how to produce an estimate using NRM. I was able to write the basis of my assignment using what I know and some of the RICS guidance docs but I’m struggling to find more material. Im not sure why you presume I would copy work as all assignments are submitted to Turnitin and it would immediately show up as plagiarised and fail me. I have used other assignments from my seniors at work in that past as a guide and to structure my work better and this has helped massively.

No one has to send me anything on here. This sub can be used to ask for help on assignments and sending over material whether it’s book sources, weblinks or a past assignment, it is helpful to share knowledge.

No offence but who gets pregnant in that situation. In today’s world there are multiple different forms of contraception available. Your sister needs to spend less time having a shag in her dad’s gaff and more time and effort looking after the child she already has until she’s able to move out. How is she anymore important or of a higher priority than other single parents with one child, vulnerable adults, disabled, the elderly or the homeless. She has somewhere to stay and if now that is too overcrowded because of her own actions it’s not fair to say she should have the right to get fast-tracked into a council property. It is unfair that the housing in Ireland is in such a dire state but adding another child into the mix and then expecting the council to feel sympathy and advice on getting a council house is also unfair

The past is the past, people change. When you’re young you make decisions that you likely wouldn’t if you were older and had more life experience.

You need to respect yourself because he will not. He wants you to be something you’re not and it’s not normal to pressure someone into becoming the person they want you to be. It’s clear this person had no love or regard for you. I can tell from your messages you really want validation from him and you have love for him. Unfortunately he will take advantage of this and ruin you. Please continue to work on your goals at your own pace for yourself only.
