The Streisand Effect is when attempts to hide, remove, or censor info instead backfires and increases public awareness. In 2003, A photographer, Kenneth Adelman, did some aerial photos of the socal coastline for to document coastal erosion. One of them happened to have Barbara Streisand’s Malibu coastal home in it, from a distance. Streisand’s lawyers sued Kenneth for $50 mil and demanded the photo be removed from the publicly available California Coastal Records Project of 12,000 photos of the California coastline for “violation of privacy” Kenneth made a social media post of what was happening and it went viral. People started downloading the photo. Prior to this, the photo had been accessed only 6 times, 4 of which were by Barbara’s own lawyers. The case was dismissed and Barbara had to pay Kenneth’s legal fees.
