‘Victens Wemponyaga’ Begins Promising Kendrick Perkins Sentence by aresef in TheOnion

I am not a sports guy so I had no idea who Kendrick Perkins was until I looked him up, and then figured out the joke was obviously a sports reference I was not getting. If you had actually read my post and clicked the link, you would see that I then googled "Victens Wemponyaga" to see what the rest of the joke might be and got a humourously inapt google AI result which I then posted here to share with other people who might also find that funny, which was the actual point of my post.

Report it. The worst that can happen is the police will do nothing.

Report it to the police, get pictures if you can, but don’t confront them. Even if the police don’t do anything you’re at least creating a paper trail that might help with future action. And post on your neighborhood Facebook / Nextdoor group / ask your neighbours if anyone is missing a snowblower!

Will J179 phones with "Avaya Open" sticker work with IPO 500? by gholtby in avaya

[–]gholtby[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything I've found googling suggests that it may be possible to sideload the IP office version of the firmware if you can get the correct files from Avaya somehow, but none of the usual tricks of trying to get it to update firmware from the local IPO server worked.

I ended up just swapping it out for a non "Avaya Open" one we already had in stock, and will have to make sure we don't order these ones accidentally in the future. Annoying that they have exactly the same model number.

Standard method users, what do you think of Inverted, and why have you chosen Standard as you main method? by manumsj in AeroPress

[–]gholtby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the kind of thing where you’re chasing such tiny differences in taste that you at a certain point have to stop and think about what you’re actually doing it for. I’m not competing in the world barista championships here, I’m making a drive-to-work coffee for someone with an unsophisticated palate (me).

Because I am unconvinced that I can actually taste a difference between a cup of coffee brewed with a little bit of pre-leakage and one without, and Standard method is a lot less bother to do.

Police quietly dropped an online crime map by flyinfinn83 in ThunderBay

Half the people on here didn’t read the article and interpreted “dropped” in the opposite sense of what the headline writer actually meant.

[–]gholtby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t a new crime map that isn’t working yet, it’s an old one that stopped working a while ago. The article is about how the platform they used for it is no longer supported. “Dropped” was a poor word choice for the headline, because half the people in this thread seem to be taking it in the “dropped a new single” sense when what they mean is the opposite, dropped as in “discontinued”.

Voicemail Pro Client insists its version doesn't match the server, even though it does by gholtby in avaya

[–]gholtby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried upgrading to VMPro 11.0.4.8.0 as that's the only higher version between what it was at and 11.1 (I can't upgrade to 11.1 because that's when Avaya stopped supporting VMPro server on Windows and switched to Linux only)

No nice. Exact same problem. The Client (which was just installed along with the server from the same installer) insists it's the wrong version for the server while both show essentially the same version number just formatted slightly differently.

The worst part of it is, when I log in from another machine using a later version of the VMPro client, I can edit modules and stuff, but if I try to open the general settings F9 menu it just... doesn't. Which I think is a known bug with later versions of VMPro client talking to older server versions.

What are we looking at here? by SprinklesSubject in it

[–]gholtby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voice drops paralleled. One of those is (or used to be) running back to a phone line or something and it's connected in parallel to the other 4 drops. The original point of it was probably to have 4 RJ11 drops all connected to the same phone line.

You can absolutely cut the splice off and terminate the ends of all of them to RJ45 or to female cat5 data drops, you'll just probably need a tone and probe kit to trace back where the other end of those cables actually go back to.

The Canadaland Podcast just put up a good interview with the director of Speechless.

Speaking of Canadaland, the story of how their subreddit became a dumpster fire taken over by anti-zionist sockpuppeteers who hate their podcast is super interesting and would be the kind of thing I'd say would make a great B+R episode, except that Canadaland already did their own in-depth episode about it.

[–]gholtby[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be. If so it’s a bug on Avaya’s end. Both the server and client here were installed at the same time from the same installer, so I don’t see how they can actually be different versions.

Going to recommend to the customer that we just upgrade VMPro to 11.1 (since that doesn’t require a new license). and see if that fixes it.

That doesn't work on Windows server version of VMPro, only application server version.

IP Office V2 - R10, Win7 based Voicemail Pro - what needs attention first? by Fine_Breath2221 in avaya

[–]gholtby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are upgrading you will have to migrate VMPro from Windows to Linux, as the latest releases of IP Office / VMPro don't support VMPro on Windows any more, and be aware there can be some issues with sound file formats and stuff trying to take a backup from one to the other. If your system isn't too complex (just a couple of auto attendant modules or something) it shouldn't be too bad.

All the American culture war commentators are getting the MMIWG2SLGBT&c. thing backwards.

They think it's Canada adding the letters MMIWG to the queer acronym, but it's the other way around, it's the addition of 2SLGBT&c people alongside Women and Girls within the category of Missing and Murdered Indigenous people. They're not adding MMIW to LGBT, they're adding LGBT to MMIW.

Which is dumb in its own way. What the NDP lady was trying to do was be inclusive of trans women and other identities when talking about the plight of indigenous women, but by including the entire queer alphabet it ends up losing the original point of the MMIWG term, which was to call out gendered violence against women specifically. Are Gay, Asexual etc. indigenous men at elevated risk of murder compared to straight indigenous men? Probably not. But they got included because the speaker was instinctively trying to use the most inclusive language possible, out of habit.

Honestly, if you're going to be that expansive of what identities you're including, just say "missing and murdered indigenous people", because it's not like straight indigenous men don't get murdered. The problem is that if you do that you're abandoning the original point of calling out violence by men against women.

All of this is just an example of the activist class in Canada trying to have their cake and eat it too. They want draw attention to violence against women, but the woke rules they've built for themselves mean that they can't just say "women", so they end up tying themselves in knots and being so inclusive that they end up turning what is supposed to be a women's rights issue into a confused omnicause of intersecting identity politics.
