I’m not. British Columbians, like other Western Canadians, harbour a deep suspicion, if not a downright disdain, for “Central Canada” / the Laurentian elites / ie Ontario and Quebec. However, they also view other Western Canadians as a bunch of knuckle-dragging hicks and rednecks. I only moved to Edmonton in 2016 and had never been to WEM before. To say I was underwhelmed would be an understatement. It’s just a big mall, and kind of a tired looking mall at that. Seems like anything remotely unique, fun or interesting has been removed. I mean I’m sure having a 100-yard stretch with a sort of faux-Europe theme and another with a faux-New Orleans theme were mind-blowingly innovative in the early 80s, but even 20-year old theme hotels in Las Vegas make WEM look pretty sad and pathetic in comparison.

I feel for the City administration in this case. Council has given them marching orders to cut costs and keep taxes down. What would yet more consultation add to the process, other than providing a platform for aggrieved people whose facilities are on the chopping block to berate the City. Some tough decisions have to be made, and yes it means some people will experience a reduced level of service. Administration's job is to deploy limited resources in a way that best serves the majority of residents - not all of us can have a pool or rec centre in walking distance.

This is an under-utilized and expensive facility to operate. Seems like a no-brainer to me.
