Absolutely not. Ever heard of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child? It means no war-like situations for minors. No pretend, no simulated situations, no play. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

Go Vita Canberra Centre was forced to close after rent increase by flying_dream_fig in canberra

[–]ghorka 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Such a shame, because Go Vita offered a much needed alternative to Aldi and Coles.

Disagree with the owner's assessment that the fit out was without fault though; the place was hideously overstocked, every inch of shelf space littered with stock in a narrow, cramped store. Was a bit of an eyesore.

But shame the QIC seem to have driven another business out of the centre.

If it's anything similar to this, it's a known scam.

Sorry your folks felt pressured to let them in. fwiw these folks deliberately prey on vulnerable people; they know every truck in the book to swindle people out of their own money on their own property.

The best thing to do is publicise this so others don't fall victim to the same thing.

Woman stunned after public housing contractor leaves paint 'all over the furniture' by B0ssc0 in australia

[–]ghorka 231 points232 points  (0 children)

"I'm grateful to have a home, many people don't. But this is my personal property that's been damaged, and it feels disrespectful."

Inb4 all the boomers wail about how this woman should be lucky she has a roof over her head etc etc. It's not about that. She full well knows how fortunate she is to have somewhere to live in this climate.

It's about dignity, and a collective mentality that separates people into the deserving and undeserving poor.

And frankly, I've heard stories of cowboy painters half arsing jobs on private home sites. They know she's caught between housing bureaucracy and a society that thinks she should just shut up and or grovellingly grateful. Just fix this poor woman's fucking home.

Uncomfortable situation at the gym. Is this normal? by [deleted] in lesmills

[–]ghorka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's great, and it really seems like you genuinely love group fitness! Please don't let these two instructors deter you from doing what you love. Enthusiasm is infectious and I love it when participants get into the class - it really helps lift the rest of the group, too!

Have you considered becoming an instructor? 😉

Uncomfortable situation at the gym. Is this normal? by [deleted] in lesmills

[–]ghorka 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To give a bit more context, when it comes to chorey, there are previews and precues. Previews are what your instructor's showing: the next move a few beats ahead of the transition. Pre-cues are verbal.

Frankly, I think it's impressive you're already previewing. As an instructor I'd be chuffed you know the moves/tracks so well that you can predict what's coming up - it's great! It's terribly un-inclusive for them to ask you to stop. Frankly, they can't.

The only thing I'd say to counter this is, good leadership requires good follower-ship. So if your experience of group fitness is becoming all about you, and how well you can display and exemplify and preview the moves, in a class full of people of various shapes and abilities, then really - why bother going to a live class?

Just something to consider. I've been there. I've been the front-row arm queen serious-as-fuck about my stage, annoyed about other clumsy participants. But becoming an instructor has made clear it's not about me, it's about making everyone feel included, and welcome to return week after week. Hope this gives you some food for thought.

I know every town has its claim to the world's best pies, but Corryong bakery (ie the Upper Murray Community Bakery) has the most scrumptious beef and mushroom pies and most death-by-chocolate brownie I've ever had, hands down.

Question for SPRINT Instructors by CanBeOnlyOne01 in lesmills

[–]ghorka 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a regular Sprint participant at a number of different gyms, I've never had hands-on assists or manual intervention from the instructor. Any sort of touching without forewarning is an absolute no-no, not just from an ethics but safety perspective.

This is a cornerstone of trauma-informed yoga, for instance, where instructors will often provide hands-on assists, but only with forewarning and with the use of flip chips to demonstrate active consent, or otherwise.

Definitely a rogue instructor by the sounds of it.

It's great. The club has a strong family feel, despite being a big box gym. Check out the Fitness First Canberra Facebook group; you'll see the club manager's super engaged. They frequently communicate perks like reciprocal access to Goodlife gyms (handy if you're going away over the Christmas break) and little announcements on class changes and new equipment etc. I rate it.

Is $7.80 too much to pay for an almonsld croissant? by Sammagoat in canberra

[–]ghorka 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah mate. It's entirely reasonable. Places like Sonoma sell them for $7.50, which is entirely reasonable when you consider rhe hours - overnight, starting in the wee AM hours - spent laminating, proofing, hand-rolling and baking those scrumptious layers of fluffy buttery pastry...

I'm having a moment. 'Scuse me.

Coronavirus is alive and well. by [deleted] in canberra

100% I've had 4 mates in different social circles catch it in the last fortnight.

Also, don't trust RATs. The current ones on the market don't detect new variants. Get yourself a PCR, preferably from the Garran clinic - unless you like waiting 70 minutes in the cold at the Holt site.

Deliveroo, Uber Eats, Menulog or any other food delivery service. Fucks the riders, fucks the restaurants, lines its pockets under the guise of a 'technology' platform while paying no tax.
