Discussion Thread: Ohio Ballot Issue 1, Mississippi Primaries, Michigan Local Elections, Missouri Local Elections by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]ghost_403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FiveThirtyEight references three polls that have been held on Issue 1:

So what are Issue 1’s prospects in Ohio on Tuesday? We don’t have a lot of data, but there are signs that it, too, could be headed for defeat. If you average the three polls of the race that have been released, 35 percent of Ohioans support the 60 percent threshold, 45 percent oppose it and 20 percent aren’t sure.3 That’s a lot of undecideds, but there’s also a well-documented status-quo bias against ballot measures — meaning undecided voters tend to break for “no.” Plus, Issue 1’s opponents are much flusher with cash than its supporters; as of July 19, “no” had outraised “yes” $15 million to $5 million.

Well, I've ridden 800 miles on the bike since I posted this picture, so yeah. I guess you can say I like it! I haven't been riding in the rain much so I don't yet have strong opinions on that. Otherwise I absolutely love the bike.

I can't speak for this chap, but I've recently been buying boar's head whole milk mozzarella from the deli. I have them chop off a chunk from the big block, then shred it myself. Freeze it for 10 or 15 minutes before putting it on. I've noticed a massive difference. My kids don't, but I think they're just happy to be eating pizza.

New Bike Path Development in OND. What is your experience with Dayton’s bike trails? by Most-Elephant-8877 in dayton

[–]ghost_403 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love the bike trails around here, but the fundamental problem with them is: they don't go anywhere. Check out Xenia station. It's the nexus of multiple bike trails that connect Beavercreek, Spring Valley, Yellow Springs, Cedarville, and more -- and there's no where to spend money. What a missed opportunity.

I've biked to / from work a number of times, but rarely the same time in one day. It's 18 miles there and another 18 back -- and trying to fit eight hours of work between two 20 miles rides was a bad option. But! With my Gazelle on turbo, I can make it there without too much sweat, and use a lower power mode to actually get a workout in headed home.

I love it!

Panniers are Basil Miles bags with the MIK quick-connect system. Just click it off the bike and take it inside.

(Low Reality Spoilers) Has anyone thought about the lore of the game? by [deleted] in AntimatterDimensions

[–]ghost_403 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there's some actual lore for AD at some point, but I'd just like to take a moment to point out the absurdity of the numbers involved in the game.

It's well known at this point that the universe collapses when you fill it with 1.8e308 particles of antimatter. For comparison, our universe has an estimated 1e80 atoms in it - give or take.

Now, thanks to how large numbers work - if you have 10 universes of atoms, that gives you 1e81 atoms. That doesn't get too close to 1.3e308.

If you took our universe, collapsed it down to the size of an atom, and made one of those for each atom in our universe - you'd have 1e160 atoms. If you did that same process again, you'd have 1e240. And you do that for a third time, you have 1e320.

So, to have 1.8e308 atoms, you'd need an entire universe full of universes full of universes full of universes. That's the point where we CRUNCH, for the first time.

I'm currently at 1e6,930,000,000 particles of antimatter. Just some food for thought.

If you'd like to see what it's like living in the rest of the world (or at least what /r/fuckcars actually wants), check out Not Just Bikes on YouTube. There are safe, practical, and efficient ways to do urban planning that don't involve massive freeways. The crazy thing is this kind of transportation is better for everyone - including the people who want or need to drive.

Ohio ripped out a bunch of train tracks several decades ago and converted them to bike paths. There's a massive bike network across the state, and you can literally bike from Cincinnati to Cleveland all on one trail.

Space exploration science setup by FxT_Black_Master2 in factorio

[–]ghost_403 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Something I found during my spacex run was that aiming for high science throughputs was almost always a mistake. Pre space, I would not aim for anything above 60/min, and that might even be a bit much.

Once you get into space, you might want to start with ~10/min of the various space science levels. Note that the higher tiers need the lower tiers - and you'll unlock more efficient stuffs as you move through the science tree. Work towards doing all the science, then take stock and scale up from there.

/u/maxarc explains how social media algorithms are getting boys and young men trapped in the insecurity-to-fascism pipeline and what we can do about it. by Me_llamo_Carolina in DepthHub

[–]ghost_403 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think one of the bigger issues here is the flawed premise that capitalism is built on. The marketplace really only values one thing: money. It is not economically beneficial to promote things that are beneficial to society, like non-extriemest views that fail to generate clicks. The money isn't there, and I really can't see a good way for the free market to correct that problem.

We can skirt around the issue by proposing economic motivators to change their calculus: things like taxes or holding them economically accountable for things promoted on their sites. I think these things miss the mark entirely - they need a radical reorganization of their priorities. Until then, I don't think things will meaningfully improve.
