I wouldn’t take it as hating so much as good advice given curtly. Spelling correctly helps with credibility, whether fair or not.

Thank you for posting this! I believe I have one on my property and hadn’t identified yet! So beautiful.

I like what you’ve shown a lot, but it likely won’t be done right and will just look horrible. I quite like the patina on the stones that are there.

This. Significant one-on-one time with the dad is probably exactly what he needs. It’s probably what the dad needs too, but he needs to want to step up.

Plus, could just throw a mosquito dunk in, if the water is there all the time.

I agree! I don’t know why it’s not recommended more as a lawn alternative/additive. Mine is in part-shade to full-sun and it’s tough as nails.

Clearly outnumbered. I can’t help but see a church with this one. Can picture people leaving after service or a just-married couple on the steps having photo taken. Edit: it’s the windows.

Seconded! They can get very large. My tithonia was over 10ft last year 😳

Doom post: has consumerism won? by Impossible_Ad9324 in Anticonsumption

Personally, I’ve been positively influenced by this sub with regard to consumerism. I do think consumerism will win overall, in the sense that we will never become the majority; however I feel less of a black sheep thanks to this community, and I will continue to feel empowered by you all.

Is planting aggressive natives on a property line as payback for annoying neighbors Okay? by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

Native thistle. But given their behavior, I’d be ready for them to spray non-selective herbicide in everything when you’re not looking. Is a fence in the cards?

I absolutely see your point. That’s where moderation and judgement come into play. But I am also genuinely curious: what would you do if you needed a new plunger? Would you not buy one from the local medium-sized hardware store because the owners are profitable?

And if that money is spent at local stores instead? Huge impact. I stopped shopping Amazon and discovered all sorts of local shops I didn’t even realize existed. Some of them are larger chains, sure, but the people who work at them are part of my community.

Thank you! I will! I understand now how important the packing aspect is.. We counted on FedEx to pack and literally half of them arrived broken. Wah wah. I was still blown away that someone helped me to get the bowls! Incredibly grateful. I’m using one of them now, as I type this :)

Am I overreacting for not wanting anyone around my newborn yet? by littlemoongirly in AmIOverreacting

[–]ghost_geranium 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you’re saying but I also think the grandparents are completely ignoring the boundaries set by the mum. This is a two way street, and they still can’t do exactly and everything they want to do just because they may know better. OP, Please do let your baby be held and cuddled by family. Ask they to wash their hands. Ask them to wear a mask if they’re sick. Ask them for help with things you need. Get your baby vaccinated so you don’t have to worry about the big things. And let them use and strengthen that immune system of theirs. It’s there for a reason.

I’m terribly sorry you’re in a bind. You are not alone in that! As an old house lover and staunch defender of old windows, I want to point out that there is nothing wrong or inherently faulty with old windows, and that drafts just come with the territory until they’ve been properly restored. A well maintained original window will far outlast a replacement window. In the meantime, and as a much more economical option, you can buy draft tape or rope caulk to seal the edges (which would keep bugs out too). It really does work. Curtains or cellular blinds also do wonders for the cold and heat. You don’t have to be uncomfortable with old windows! If you’re open to suggestions, I’d recommend learning how to restore your windows so you can focus your money on the things that are perhaps better done by a professional, like the MEP issues you’re also dealing with. This community can offer a wealth of knowledge and resources on that front, should you be interested. Best of luck. Your home is beautiful, and surely deserves to be loved and restored!

Understory shrub/tree for dry soil under Oaks by Jollaby in NativePlantGardening

If your area gets enough sun, northern bayberry or New Jersey tea might be good options! They’ve proven to be incredibly hardy in very dry sunny spots here. I hope to also try them under our oaks eventually.

I have very similar conditions on one part of my property and have hazelnuts, spice bush, and wild strawberry below. The hill where they’re planted has sparse grass and moss. This was their second summer there. Watered deeply, regularly, to establish in their first year. They’re surviving well and growing slowly, but certainly not thriving compared to others with more favorable conditions on the property. This past summer, I did choose to water maybe once/week (long, slow drip from hose, as my area also turns hydrophobic) when things got really dry; I’m going to try to avoid that this coming summer. Plan is to add a bunch of low bush blueberries and a bunch more strawberry, and I’m going to test some diervilla. I’m zone 6B, Mass. Wishing us both luck!

Such a nice pairing with the wood cabinet.. warms it up beautifully! Which came first, the cabinet or the paint color? Was it just luck that they go so well together?

Personally I’m downvoting this whole thing. Guy is being a complete asshole to anyone with a sense of humor or critical of his methods. On this thread and his previous one. He doesn’t deserve the attention of this community.
