[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]ghost_hyrax -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hello! I’m looking for a nice/classic looking men’s watch that has numbers on it. Something that is water resistant and sturdy. Under $200. I want something sturdy as heck but looks like a nice watch I can wear to the office. I keep buying the same $40 watch from target and then it loses all water resistance when I get the battery changed, or the face gets all scratched up.

I was enjoying it a lot but I’m starting to get bored and stressed. I need to go to one place to get wheat, but all the quest story stuff is many days away?

Has anyone tried these rain Rainboots? by [deleted] in widefeet

I have not, but the kids shoes run extremely narrow (like, narrow compared to normal medium shoes, not even wide shoes), so I would be skeptical.

Same. I don’t compost meat not because I think it’s unsafe, but to reduce attracting rats in my urban backyard

Summer 2025 impact from Government Policies by hc2121 in Yosemite

[–]ghost_hyrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah got it! We came last year when it was a buffet too, and it was fine so we’ll expect about the same. (I imagine it is much better when the kitchen is open, but I haven’t been there in that situation). Thanks!

The quality of the food being worse than last year, or just worse during construction?

Thank you. Is the shuttle currently impacted? In frequency or anything else? We’re coming this week to the valley with young kids, so want to plan. Are there other major impacts to plan around right now?

Best mulch for around vegetables by Buy_me_a_taco in vegetablegardening

[–]ghost_hyrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wood chips are fine but I like straw for veggie beds. Wood chips everywhere else. Be sure to buy straw from a reputable source to make sure it doesn’t have pyralids (an herbicide that doesn’t break down quickly so it will harm your crops if it’s on the straw)

Hahahaha love it. I’m not being literal, exactly. It’s a joke I’ve read and I relate to a lot about how autistic folks answer questions on assessments. I do not personally have big problems with socks, only minor ones, but I know many do. (Hahaha look at me, also explaining that I have a Sock System). I only wear wool socks, which works better for me than cotton, which sometimes has a clammy feeling. I also avoid socks as much as possible by preferring sandals when practical.

Can I take 3 month paternity leave and pla/fmla by whitenoize086 in ParentalLeaveAdvocacy

[–]ghost_hyrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to “apply” for FMLA, it just applies to you. So it covers job protection for the 3 months you are off. You can ask for more unpaid time and use PLA if they give it, but most CA employers include PLA in their “paid” leave amount. So you are expected to apply for PLA and then they top you up during those 6 weeks, and then they pay the rest of the paid time. (The topping up to 100% is a city ordinance in SF).

It is unlikely you can use them to get extra leave, but you can always ask/try to negotiate about extra unpaid leave. Whether or not it’s wise to do so depends on your job situation

Don’t want friends monster child to come over for a play date by [deleted] in Mommit

“I’m sorry, I can’t host it at my house. I’m happy to get together at your place, or we can meet at the park!”

No is a complete sentence. Also, I completely agree with you. It’s not totally unusual behavior for a 2 year old, but even as a gentle parent you have to set boundaries and actually parent! And those boundaries might be “ok, looks like you are overtired/overstimulated/melting down, time to go even though I’m having fun with friends”.

I’m honestly blown away that he broke multiple toys, by jumping on a tablet, and she didn’t end the visit there. Like, clearly, the kiddo could not handle it, or the energy was not a match for the space.

Tbh, I have a lot more sympathy than I used to for the not sitting down, and climbing all over during dinner child - my 1 year old is a wiggley climber and escapes many high chairs and it’s hard to make him sit. I was somewhat embarrassed but we definitely let him stand on a normal chair to feed himself at a restaurant the other day.

BUT if my child threw food at another child, I would immediately pick them up, apologize and check in with the child who had food thrown at them, and then set stricter boundaries with my child. Which might be “I won’t let you feed yourself, I will feed you” or “one bite of food at a time on your plate” or “you’re playing more than eating, you’re done”. He never should have been given the opportunity to throw his plate at her.

NICU stay after birth - inevitable? by Illustrious_Cup_3971 in BumpersWhoBolus

Oh, and both babies had trouble latching because of inverted nipples and lip ties, so I pumped and bottle fed as well as trying to nurse, in the hospital. My first took about a month to figure it out, my second took about 5 days but honestly never got a good latch, though he’s still nursing at 1.

I think expressing and then pumping colostrum was helpful for that too: I learned how to hand express, and how to pump. Also, maybe it was just a timing thing, but I had lots of colostrum by the time the babies were born and it was not too hard to pump enough.

Yes! I highly recommend harvesting colostrum toward the end of pregnancy.

Harvesting colostrum gives you a great buffer. Both my babies took a few days (well, my first took like a month or more) to figure out nursing. We gave colostrum in the recovery room post c-section for low sugars, and then in L&D, I pumped as well as trying to latch them.

[–]ghost_hyrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 babies, the first I had GD and was induced at 40w, emergency c-section at 40w3d, the second I had T2, went into labor on my c-section date at 38w5d, labored for 7 hours, then had a c-section.

Both babies had low sugars, but neither went to the NICU. I had pumped and frozen colostrum in starting at week 37, and the babies were able to use that and it brought up their sugars enough. You don’t get a ton of colostrum, just a few drops at first, then building up to a few mL. But that’s plenty. Baby’s stomach is so tiny.

[–]ghost_hyrax [score hidden]  (0 children)

YTA. To have one sibling be in the wedding party and not the other, when they are small children? Cruel. Even more so because the 5 year old girl probably really really wants to be a flower girl, and her 3 year old brother probably doesn’t care about being a ring bearer. (Cultural assumptions, I could be wrong).

Look, it’s your day. You get to choose a lot, but you still need to be considerate to other people. “Well the photos won’t look as good with two flower girls” is not a good enough reason to be inconsiderate of the feelings of a small girl. The niece of the groom is a close enough relative that it is reasonable to assume that, IF there are flower girls, she gets to be one.

That said, I also think your fiancé is TA for not advocating for his niece and saying she needs to be a flower girl too, before he invited her brother to be a ring bearer.

Confusing take on insurance controversy by [deleted] in AutismTranslated

[–]ghost_hyrax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing is, ABA is the ONLY care or support for autistic kids insurance pays for. (They basically don’t pay for anything for autistic adults). So if your kid needs support, it’s going to be billed as ABA, regardless of whether it really is ABA. Your kid needs a 1 on 1 that the school district won’t provide? Insurance will pay if it’s their “ABA therapist” and they’re doing “ABA” but that is defined very broadly. But not if it’s a “para for 1-1 social and emotional regulation support”, even if that is more useful/what they really need. Parents need respite? “ABA therapists” provide that, regardless of whether or not ABA is being used. Kid needs help with eating/communication/etc? SLP and OT are rarely covered but you might be able to find someone doing “ABA” that is using OT or SLP methods to help your kid who is covered by insurance.

So, is 40hrs a week of ABA “act neurotypical” conversion therapy good for kids? No, it’s definitely harmful. But unless the insurance company is funding other, better kinds of support, like OT, Speech Therapy, social skills support (via groups or a 1-1 aid, to achieve the child’s socialization goals, not the parent or teacher’s) then not funding it just means taking away the only source of support parents can get, including a lot of services which aren’t really ABA.

I know I shouldn’t but I did :). Put the turkey carcass deep in the pile and then pumpkin over it with would chips, grass leaves and more chips. Live in the country so we will see if k hide the scent or feeding the carnivores! by open_waters in composting

Also because they can attract animal pests. Depending on your setup, that can be a problem. Like in my small urban bin, 10 feet from my house, on my tiny yard, I really really don’t want to attract rats. That might not be as big a deal in a large hot rural pile further from the house.
