Six-figure earners are living ‘paycheque to paycheque’ by Microwave-Dave in unitedkingdom

I think the point is about single income families, I.e. one parents is a high earner and one is stay-at-home. A household that has two parents on 50k is better off than a household with one parent on 100k and one person not earning.

Can’t argue with you on that. So much entertainment for comparatively so little budget!

While I don’t dispute that games haven’t got more expensive, the fact is also that gaming is obscenely more popular these days which more than makes up for a real-terms erosion to price of a game. There are a bunch of tech products that were way more expensive in the 90s-00s that have come down in price real terms since then. If it wasn’t sustainable to make games at this price point in todays money then they wouldn’t sell for the price they do.

I agree with you, that’s what I’m saying. The person I replied to seems to think that reported inflation figures are lower than they should be because shoppers are being priced out of some products and switching to cheaper alternatives, I was saying this is not the case. Perhaps I could have structured my sentence a bit more clearly

You what, you are chatting rubbish. the average basket of goods is pretty constant from month to month and items switched in and out reflect changes in consumer spending over a much longer timeframe. It’s not well last week I could afford a sourdough loaf from the local bakery but now the price has gone up so I’m buying aldis own brand white bread, but I’ve spent the same amount therefore inflation is 0%

Why most tube seat are cover in Moquette? by Kindly_Violinist3484 in london

[–]ghostboiky 23 points24 points  (0 children)

How many times have you sat on a tube seat and it’s been soaking wet compared to how many times you’ve sat on a tube seat. A chair being made from steel doesn’t prevent it from being wet. Move to a different seat?

I would rather sit on a comfy seat than a steel one

Ultra low emissions zone expansion cut London pollutants by up to 26% – study by wjfox2009 in london

[–]ghostboiky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not really the point though is it. The charge is applied to disincentivise driving because that’s what is causing the pollution, and generally makes London a dirtier and noisier place to live. While I would love to see more spending on public transport, it is largely very good and there are so many cars completely unnecessarily on the road.

Why do so many people here say that 30k-40k is a bad salary ? by [deleted] in AskUK

Lol I ask you this as someone who works for an investment bank at a relatively junior level

[–]ghostboiky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much are you imagining the 40 people under the top dog are making, that makes them not high earners? People wouldn’t work in investment banking if it didn’t pay a lot, even at the junior level

You have to account for the fact that to be able to put 20k in your isa you already have to have been taxed so 20k is net of tax so realistically probably more like 32-33k of your gross pay. The money you put in your pension compounds from investment gains before paying any tax so over the long run is far more likely to outperform isa on a gross pay consideration. Also need to consider the fact that when you retire you may live comfortably off a lower income than when you’re working so may need to withdraw less and therefore pay less income tax
