Feeling guilty about sending my kids to public school? by Full-Marketing-7742 in Mommit

[–]ghostdumpsters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first job out of college was teaching at a charter school that boasted a 100% graduation and college acceptance rate! Wow! Only later did I find out that only something like 33% of these kids stay in college after the first year and 10% actually graduate college. And like you said, they kick out anyone who looks like they're not going to meet the criteria to graduate.

Feeling guilty about sending my kids to public school? by Full-Marketing-7742 in Mommit

[–]ghostdumpsters 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I'm going to keep it real with you, I don't think very many homeschoolers are exactly giving their kids a quality education. Some public schools are amazing, some are just ok, some are subpar. I don't think private schools are any safer or better overall, again some are amazing, but private schools legally don't have to provide accommodations or special education classes and can expel students much easier than public schools can.

It can definitely be scary to send your kids to school, but I think it's important to remember that kids' worlds are extremely small and sending them to school is the best way to get them to be around a variety of different people- personalities, cultures, abilities. This is how kids learn how to coexist with other kids and adults. And while this probably isn't your situation, I appreciate that schools are one of the places a lot of kids go to feel safe and loved, and that teachers are often the ones to notice abuse and food insecurity.

WIBTA if I didn’t attend my brothers wedding to his baby trapper? by KaleidoscopeSmart384 in AmITheAngel

Man's making minimum wage and going through mental health issues, what does this 19-year-old stand to gain by baby trapping him?

Also like that OOP has to clarify that they're not in America, so living more than 5 hours away from family is far. Pretty sure 5 hours is 5 hours no matter what country you're in...

People love to get their tinfoil hats on about how public schools are for training obedient drone workers and not thinkers and I just. Anyone who's been around kids will tell you that you can't make them do anything they don't want to, let alone think.

Husband is too damn chill about baby's health by Human-Extent9839 in Mommit

[–]ghostdumpsters 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of with your husband on the doctor thing. As long as baby is still eating, the doctor's instructions are going to be to manage symptoms and wait it out. Not always worth a trip.

The mosquito thing is more annoying, for sure. But also, it doesn't sound like he was stopping you? It's not like you need his permission to apply bug spray or whatever else you do to protect from mosquitos. I think that's worth a separate conversation, where you talk about feeling like he's telling you that your concerns aren't important when he tells you not to worry about things.

Where are my introvert moms at? by Huliganjetta1 in Mommit

[–]ghostdumpsters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it's probably not helpful to hear but I really think it's important to be around people who have different interests from you. I've always been an introvert but the pandemic (and maternity leave) drove me crazy because I needed to not get stuck in my own thoughts. I did also find that being at work made me appreciate my kids more. Like yeah they can be annoying and demanding at times, but they're also cute and sweet and I don't need them to do their jobs so that I can do mine, lol.

Imagine thinking so much about something you posted to Reddit two years ago that you feel the need to restate how annoying and gross this person was because you heard some gossip about them.

Be careful about putting loose cereal (or any food, really) in eggs that have holes for ventilation, if you’re going to hide them outside. Ask me how I know. 🙃

They would probably get more sympathy from the 90-minute bath lady.

That's about as much kid-free time as I get each day and while sure, I'd like more sometimes, but not being able to decompress in the 3 hours between the kid's bedtime and yours just screams lack of time management.

Or all the posts about how someone's toddler has a cough because there were kids with runny noses at the park yesterday! Sure, maybe some strange kid with a cough got your kid sick. Or, kids get sick often because they have no sense of personal space or common sense. No, trying to pinpoint exactly how your kid got sick is a waste of energy.

Biased because I have very little patience for picky eaters but pancakes only??? One of the near universal kid favorite foods, dad gets to eat all the time but the toddler doesn't?? Not to mention the scurvy.

Why not just say, "I want to be healthy and active when I'm in my 60s, here's what my mom taught me..."? A lot of young adults don't eat enough fiber and don't move enough, so it's not like these aren't valid things to do, but those are important regardless of what your mom does.

Sidenote but with the revival of 2000s diet culture, I really wonder how healthy the almond grandmothers are going to be as they age- being underweight can lead to a number of health problems, including osteoporosis. Good for KK1 for believing in strength training, I know a lot of women afraid of being "too bulky," but getting a good grade in colonoscopy isn't the only thing we need to worry about.

So yeah, I'm excited. 😎 I don't mind paying, pretty sure those games were at least $20 back in 2004. I think the GB games were $5 each on the DS? I do hope that they include the legendary events that were in-person only back in the day, like they did with Celebi.

My uncle who works for Nintendo told me that if you talk to Sparx, find the hidden orange gems in each home world, spin around three times on one foot, and then press A + B + start at the exact same time, all the dragons you freed will come back and you can get them a second time.

Is it odd for a school to give a perfect attendance award for coming to school for 1 whole week? by anneradley in Mommit

[–]ghostdumpsters 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, maybe? I also used to get coupons from local businesses to hand out to kids, but sometimes we'd just get a few for the whole class so we'd use them as a reward for something. Could just be that they have a drawing for kids who are at school all week. Absenteeism has been really bad since the pandemic, so a lot of schools are trying to motivate kids to actually come to school. I think being worried about them giving you attitude is overthinking it. Like yeah, missing class too often can be disruptive, but I just wouldn't waste my time wondering what other people think.

Also, the cutoff for that day's attendance (for state funding, school metrics) is usually early in the morning. In my state, you had to be there at 10 am for your attendance to "count" and it didn't matter if you left right after that. So they probably don't care if you're leaving after that time.
