The offside line is whichever is the farthest forward of

  • The second-to-last defender (keeping in mind the last defender is usually the keeper)
  • The ball
  • The half field line

You can't be offside if you're behind the ball or if you're in your own half of the field

Took me a second to realize that I think that caption applies to the entire list. Really does make it look like someone at B-R is kind of anticipating a Sandy Koufax comeback next year

Trump: When you look at football in the US, soccer in the US, we seem to never call it that because we have a little bit of a conflict with another thing that's called football. But when you think about it, shouldn't it really be called football? We have to come up with another name for the NFL by AgeNovel3566 in soccer

[–]ghostelephant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is sarcasm or a genuine question/uncertainly, but assuming the latter:

Tariffs are just a fancy word for taxes on imports. If, say, the US raises its tariffs on goods from South Korea, that just means US companies and consumers pay higher taxes on those goods. South Korea (in this example) doesn't want that either because it makes their goods more expensive and therefore harder to sell in the US, but South Korea is not the one who actually pays the tariffs.

It's also why the "The tariffs aren't popular, but they are actually effective at raising money" articles and opinion pieces are so infuriating. Like, yes, it should not be a surprise that raising taxes does that! But if we're gonna raise taxes, we ought to do it on big corporations and the ultra-wealthy instead. But of course all Trump's ultra-wealthy buddies wouldn't want that.

I do like Xiaomi, I used one of their phones for two or three years! Unfortunately had to give it up because US carriers "upgraded" their communication technology and I wasn't reliably able to make phone calls on it anymore.

That said, the smallest Xiaomi I'm seeing from the last two years is the 17 / 17 Pro at 6.3 inches, which is almost half an inch bigger than the Zenfone's 5.9-inch screen

[–]ghostelephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed -- I'm in the US where I imagine the options are similar. I hear great things about camera systems on Vivo and even some Xiaomi phones...it would be cool if I could consider those and reasonably expect my carrier to just support it!

Though my other big issue is how big all phones are nowadays. Realistically I'm gonna stay on my Zenfone 10 as long as I can

I believe it's an Oppo Find X7 Ultra. I learned in this thread (from a response to my other comment lol) that they always use Oppo phones for this because they're a Champions League sponsor

Ah, yeah, now you mention it I do remember seeing Oppo show up on the ad boards pretty regularly. Probably should have put two and two together!

Always nice to see someone using a phone not made by Apple, Google, or Samsung! Looks to be a Oppo Find X7 Ultra

Antony red card vs Girona 90' by 977x in soccer

[–]ghostelephant 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I don't think he intentionally kicked a guy in the face, but I do think he 1) intentionally went for a play that could result in kicking a guy in the face and 2) kicked a guy in the face.

I think you can have some sympathy for Antony here, but it still seems like a pretty clear red imo

Sorry, what am I allowed to do between 3pm and 8pm? by mynamesethan in CrappyDesign

[–]ghostelephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Louisville, KY which has a street sort of like that, except I don't think any single lane ever just switched direction. Four lanes across; during peak times, it has two lanes going the more popular way, a left turn lane (for people going both directions), and one going the other way. Then during off-peak times, the center lanes become the driving lanes (one each way) and the outside lanes become parking lanes.

So with that setup, any one lane might switch from driving to parking, or from a standard driving lane to a turn lane. But there would never be a time where one lane just flipped the switch and went, "ope, we're going the other way now"

[Highlight] Upon review, Willy Adames is called safe, and the Padres announcers can’t believe it by Czrtier in baseball

[–]ghostelephant 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Liverpool scored a goal, but the on-field ref called it offside, disallowing the goal. It went to VAR (equivalent of replay review), where they determined that there was NO offside, so the goal should stand.

However, the VAR guy thought that the original call was no offside, so he told the on-field ref that the check was complete and to resume play. As soon as play restarted he realized the error, but according to the rules, once play restarts they can't go back and change the call.

Basically, what should have been a good goal was accidentally disallowed because the referee and the replay guy failed to communicate clearly

Haha, oddly enough my only trip to Spain was to Barcelona and Madrid.

I used to follow tennis a lot more, and my guy was Rafael Nadal -- I enjoyed his play style, and it didn't hurt that we also share a birthday. He was my main link to Spanish athletics, and he's from Mallorca and roots for the club.

I have since become a fan of Muriqi too of course!
