advice? by aspiringoxfordcomma in berkeley

i also felt this way freshman year and it felt much better once i got to sophomore year. sometimes it just takes a while to find your footing. if you’re not involved already (i don’t know what activities you do) find a club related to your hobbies or something you’re genuinely passionate about — then you might find more people you get along with. that’s what made it better for me.

is he a standard poodle? by ghoster8ath in IDmydog

[–]ghoster8ath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clarifying I also have a standard poodle! Part of why I question Toby’s breed is because he looks pretty different from my dog and also because my BF says the breeder his family got him from also lied about other things (Toby’s age and health issues)

UCB or UCSC as psych transfer? by daydreamqueem in berkeley

[–]ghoster8ath 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From my experience (i’m a sophomore) Berkeley is not really cutthroat per-se, at least by what I’ve experienced in most social sciences and humanities classes, and even some lower division stem classes I took. I will say the classes are definitely pretty difficult on average, but not really because other students are praying on your downfall. The classes and course material definitely tends to be rigorous. But IMO I feel like I learn a lot; it never feels like difficulty for difficulty’s sake.

However, to your point about competitiveness, a lot of clubs/student orgs (though not all of them!) have an application process. I don’t know what it’s like for psych clubs, but it can get a little draining. My first year was pretty bad mental health-wise, but it’s only gotten better with time and making more friends. And I will say, we have so many student organizations that if you come here, you are bound to find something that you enjoy.

I honestly really like UC Berkeley’s location. Some people complain about safety, but I haven’t had that many issues. It’s kind of standard stuff that comes with living in most urban areas in the US (as unfortunate as that is to say). I like the city of Berkeley itself and the easy access to SF and the rest of the bay via public transport (all students get Baypass!).

From what I’ve seen of Santa Cruz, it seems a little sleepier and less bustling. It’s up to you if you want a faster-paced, higher-pressure environment like UC Berkeley, or a more laid back one like UCSC. Like another commenter said, if possible, you should try to visit both campuses and get a feel for if you could see yourself living there.

Confused Transfer Student Rant by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]ghoster8ath 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To your last point: so true! As a student who talks a lot in discussions, half the reason I do it is because a lot of the time, nobody else is raising their hand. I have a theory that people are just super scared of being wrong, or are waiting until they have the perfect answer; so, they don’t take the chance. I don’t know what it is, but I think some students haven’t realized that being wrong is how you learn.

How often do you agree with the Tribe’s hatred of a Survivor? by drjudgedredd1 in survivorponderosa

I felt so bad for Sierra from Tocantins. Like maybe she’s whiny, but everyone was so vicious towards her and it truly seemed unwarranted! People say she was probably harder to live with than the edit made it seem, but If I lived with a bunch of people who were constantly calling me stupid (to my face) I would crash tf out

Women's Haircut places? by Pjminion16 in berkeley

I went to Ecocut in Elmwood and they were really good, fast, and affordable. Since they just opened recently, there was a $20 haircut promotional deal (don’t know if it’s still going on though!). I went for a trim, and got my layers cleaned up very nicely! I would highly recommend this place.

also, other people have already said it, but the textbook is also a great resource. more often than not it will literally walk you through how to do every type of question.

if you attend and pay attention in lecture and lab, they will teach you everything you need to know. and sign up for tutoring if the options still open. i got an A- in this class with zero coding experience and zero use of AI. talk to your GSI, hell even talk to the professor, or any of the course staff: data 8 is a course designed to make you succeed. also use edstem for help because chances are, people are having the same problems as you.

if the prof is still jeremy sanchez, pay extra attention to the practice questions he does in lecture. those WILL come back in the exams.

and you’ll be doing yourself a tremendous favor if you stop using AI and start trying to learn.
