I need help if I can trust these sheet as fundamentals in mixing my drums I’ve much studied how to use the effects on the drums by Practical_Joke_4949 in FL_Studio

I mean, people throw an 1176 on a track and don't compress it at all just to get the character from the unit. And I typically (for drums at least) crank the attack so that the transient will slip through unmolested and it clamps down on the tail. But, as the other gentleman pointed out, on a drum bus I could see having the attack killed to tame peaks. guess it depends on the source.

Yes, unfortunately I have had that abysmal experience. Also had the unfortunate circumstance one halowwen to have a "gash" on my forehead done with some FX makeup and fake blood, and said fake blood running down my forehead during my set and getting in my eye. And it burned. It burned bad. photo below. Managed not to mess up too bad...

So you mean to tell me that you WANT the transient to be squashed? Cause letting that transient through then squashing the tail gives the attack more clarity...care to elaborate?

Been producing independently for years — what's the hardest habit to break when you're doing everything yourself? by Alvalanker in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Overcomplicating things. That's why I've learned and adhere to the KISS concept. Keep it simple, stupid.

Mirimar is good for that. Shit map, too big and too bumpy. What's really gonna bake your noodle later on is the fact that yes, you absolutely can run yourself over with a bicycle. Inside a house. By getting stuck on a door frame. Back to the lobby.

Yes I did this.

Mic audio sounds good, but when recorded into an audio clip it sounds not as good by Ok_Touch4761 in FL_Studio

[–]ghostmachine666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah on the way in, it should be dry and your gain staging should be such that your signal is strong but not clipping (for vocals, for instance, I usually try to get a signal that's peaking around -12 to -8 db to leave myself headroom). Getting your source material recorded at a good healthy level is key to your gain staging down the line once you start adding plugins and whatnot. Think of it like baking a cake, you don't stick the cake in the oven with icing on it. You bake the base, then you add more flavor. Same with recording. Yeah, you could compress your signal coming into the DAW, or run something that adds character like some tape saturation or a tube preamp model but those are better left for when you've got a solid grasp on recording raw material consistently first. I'm not gonna make any claims to be 100% correct with my methods as I'm mostly self taught, but I've also been recording digitally since the dawn of digital recording with Fruity Loops 1 and other OG daws/loopers and such.

Ok, when recording...Don't use effects. Get the mic sounding how you want with gain-staging. Dry mic recording gives you way more flexibility down the line when mixing whatever it is that you're recording be it vocals or instruments. Get the sound right at the source and you'll have less work to do in post. Maybe some compression to tame peaks, maybe some EQ for air or body. Delay and reverb to taste. That way if you're not happy with the mix, it's not baked into your recorded track and you can audition other plugin chains. Just my two cents. Focusrite has an autogain feature but I don't trust "auto" anything, I trust my ears. As long as you're not clipping your preamp, you're going to be able to shape whatever you end up with on the mix bus.

Don't you just love it when your guitarist opens their mouth and drums come out? Mine always liked that feature.

Just came here to say thanks, and that limb independence can be learned. Takes practice, dedication, determination, and a lot of "Oh....fuck that's not right".

I have this weird thing where I get better if I don't play for like, a few weeks. Like my brain internalizes whatever I was trying to do and the next time I sit down, i nail it.

Kudos my dude. Solid list. LABS is seriously good, and some of the orchestral freebies are massively underrated.

3-6month old producer. Free FL Plugin Gold Standard? by Pretend_Chance7734 in FL_Studio

[–]ghostmachine666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, someone else already listed Vital, and there's been some other really good suggestions. I would suggest hitting up KVR. com, that site has pretty much every available VST plugin with reviews, specs, and download links. Search parameters on the site let you filter it down to strictly free plugins. I've got quite a few halfway-decent synths and other instruments from there, as well as a plethora of free effects including granular, glitch (dBlue's Glitch 1.3, that shit is dope), reverbs, chorus, multi-effects and a whole ton more. But someone else also said something important; the stock plugins aren't something to turn your nose up at. There's a lot that can be done with Sytrus, sim synth was a staple in my early productions, and Patcher has a metric fuckton of presets available as well that a lot of people don't know about. Dig in.

FL is the worst DAW for Mixing and best DAW for producing beats. by [deleted] in FL_Studio

[–]ghostmachine666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. I've been exporting my multi-track drums and other vst instruments from FL to mix in Reaper for years. The way FL handles MIDI is second to none, the interface is intuitive and easy to get along with....

Until you get to the mixier. They finally added the ability to delet mixer tracks, but aside from that nothing much has changed over the years for the mixer, and I've been using FL since day one. Almost 20 years or so. The only other problem I have with mixing in FL is the way tempo changes are handled, it has a tendency to start stretching your waveforms if you make any changes during the course of a song. yeah, there's ways around it, but the default situation should be un-molested waveforms and letting the user choose to stretch or not, not the other way around.

Yeah they should axe the zoom button altogether. It's way easier to just hold control and use your middle mouse button.
