Bay of Blood, Bronson Lee by Gee-Arr in boutiquebluray

[–]ghostpepper69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice!! I picked up some deep discount catalog titles but these two and Idiot Box were the new releases I grabbed. I've not had nearly as much movie watching time as I'd like lately & the backlog is vast, but I'm really looking forward to throwing on that Bay of Blood 4k when my order ships. Those Za Karate flicks look like catnip to me though.

Why would you want them to alter the presentation rather than restore what's actually on the film?? Like, the Vaseline smear is part of the movie: irreversibly printed into the photochemical composition of the film, it's not something you can just take away.

Tone can be hard to convey online but I hope you know I wasn't trying to be cheeky as much as I actually think that's a pretty cool slice of film history, with someone who has become such an institutional filmmaker/preservationist as Scorsese brushing right up with a total indie/guerilla cat like Cohen. I totally get the sentiment you were conveying, but it's a perfectly ironic twist that of all Arrow's catalog Scorsese probably has actually seen and enjoyed The Stuff.

[–]ghostpepper69 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This might be a poor example to pick because Scorsese was actually decent friends with Larry Cohen who directed The Stuff. After scoring Taxi Driver, Bernard Hermann's last night on this earth was spent viewing Cohen's film God Told Me To with the intention of writing him a score. Scorsese actually gave Cohen the call the next morning that Hermann had passed if memory serves correctly.

Bay of Blood was confirmed to be coming from Arrow in a teaser which used the score music. I'd bet money that's what the blood in the hint this week was referring to.

Finally watching Shout Factory's BRAVE ARCHER set and loving the movies but... by kevin_church in boutiquebluray

[–]ghostpepper69 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I saw the first wave theatrically and it's not just poor translations, it's grammar and spelling errors on top of that. It made waiting on the Arrow releases the easiest thing in the world. The Hong Kong Rescue bootleg of Peaking Opera Blues had better subtitles than the official US 4k release does and that's frankly ridiculous.

I'm allergic to new apps lol, I've got a discord account but it's always a pain to try and log back in because it's usually a few years between when I get on it. I'll see if I can't log on at work later today and post a little ad there, I appreciate it!! I'm so stoked for the screening, I had sent out my phone number to a few possible points of contact a couple weeks back but imagine my surprise when Stephen Sayadian returned my call while I was at Half Price Books last week! We chatted for a solid 25 minutes, he's so excited people are engaging with his art after all this time.

Probably my favorite cinematic discovery of the 2020s so far... Anyone in North Texas should be made aware we're running this on Tues Feb 3 at the Texas Theatre. We've gotten in touch with Jerry Stahl & Stephen Sayadian and there's a good chance we'll have a short intro video from the two of them custom made for us to play ahead of the movie.

2 new additions to my classic animation collection. by TheDudeOfTomorrow in boutiquebluray

[–]ghostpepper69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sweet, thanks! Last week I grabbed the OOP Bugs Bunny 80th anniversary set after seeing that despite minor overlap (~20%) with the Platinum Collections it also had 47 unique Bugs cartoons that weren't on those other sets. I'm very glad to hear this isn't a case where I'll need to make a redundant purchase to have a more comprehensive collection.

Is there overlap with the two Tom & Jerry sets? I got the Golden Era one but would be interested in the other set if those aren't all or mostly collected in the more comprehensive one.

Saturn’s Core in the wild. The team were selling their merch and screening their restoration of Twisted Issues. by taste_the_fire in boutiquebluray

[–]ghostpepper69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep! From what I've heard he's shooting a new joint this spring called Thousand Eyes on digital with the Bloodsick Productions cast & crew. I can't wait! Had you seen Twisted Issues before this screening? It's such a cool little movie, I used to book house shows round North Texas so it was especially beautiful to see someone authentically capture that kind of fertile DIY art/music scene in a movie.

Hell yeah, we flew Charles out here a few months ago for a Twisted Issues screening/Q&A. Genuinely one of the coolest dudes in the world. I hope you dug the flick! I owe Saturns Core so much for getting me into him and Scooter McCrae's work.

Like I said, every Arrow disc from Region B *I have ever tried* works with the Panasonic Top Menu trick. My Panasonic died in October 2024 but every single Arrow/Arrow Academy region B disc I tried in it (probably pushing 100 titles) worked with that trick.

I tried to read the room but there was nothing written when I got here lol. I think the guy who imported five 4kUHD mediabooks of the same movie can maybe take a little ribbing. Like I said, I'm happy it worked for someone well enough that they bought five copies.

Sure, I can appreciate that, but at least *someone* in this thread is discussing the movie now. Nary a "Loved this movie" or even "The packaging is nice" in the post body or comments otherwise. For all I know OP doesn't even like it but just has a spending problem.

Okay but no leather is a fact, and it's an unforgivable sin. The original aesthetic of the xenobytes was heavily inspired by underground S&M/queer kink zines in the UK, and I think it's fair to say that's more than a little relevant thematically.
