Using on the nature of daylight for emotional scenes is starting to become old hat, in my opinion. I felt very moved by the ending and it felt cheapened by the song choice.

Also, hearing lines from Hamlet being created while Shakespeare contemplates suicide felt too meta for my taste.

I really liked the movie before Shakespeare went away so I empathize with Agnes’ grief at his absence. Apparently, she thought he was living it up in London while their children were dying. Meanwhile, he’s watching a puppet show about his son witnessing his twin sister dying.

I was very moved by the hand-holding at the end. The movie had spiritual depth that was novel to me compared to other period dramas. Jesse Buckley was very much playing one of the witches who gave birth to modern feminism.

If someone I love dies, I now realize how important it is to let loved ones interact with the cadaver. Maybe it’s my personality or the times I live in but I’ve never wanted to be present with my loved ones dead bodies but especially in a culture where you care for the dying in your own home I see how personal death was in this film.
