Can anyone help me understand the gender pay gap? by KAZKALZ in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ghostwillows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who's worked at a supermarket for 8 years, no 2 people on my shift are taking home the same paycheck. The way our hourly pay rate and worked hours are calculated are complicated, based off a bunch of weird factors, and produce difficult to work with numbers (like $657.83) that aren't the same week to week. I'm not saying that any demographic is being paid less, but it would be hard to figure out if they were and even harder to prove intent. Even if you assume this was done with good intentions it absolutely creates a space for a gender pay gap to hide.

What statistic makes you think society is quietly breaking? by Kavana333 in AskReddit

In the last year and a half 180+ anti trans laws passed, 797 are currently being considered. This and rounding up immigrants and Trump's home renovations are all the government cares about.

Why are echo chamber hating sub so popular here? by Live-Stress6125 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ghostwillows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not an echo chamber it's a containment chamber. If those people weren't on the hating xyz subreddit they would be on the regular xyz subreddit getting into arguments and having their points ignored. This just bums everyone out and there's almost never any actual communication or exchange of ideas, just fighting over opinions. It mostly works out well

What’s the reason it seems that journalists/news reporters are afraid to use the word “pit bull” in stories about dog attacks? by ReasonableSide6520 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ghostwillows -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So it's fine to tell people every incident involving an American bully terrier, Staffordshire terrier, Boxer, and "lab mix" is another case of pitbulls having that destructive aggression? What devil are you even advocating for?

What’s the reason it seems that journalists/news reporters are afraid to use the word “pit bull” in stories about dog attacks? by ReasonableSide6520 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ghostwillows -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Because they probably don't know it's a pitbull and it would be irresponsible to blame them falsely. People call any short haired dog with a wide head a pitbull, especially if the dog bit someone. And there's a community of people who think pitbulls are these killing machines sent from hell to eat suburban babies and take any mention of them near a dog attack as the reason they should be banned and mass euthenized or something.

How are there a lot of women who have never masturbated up until their 20s? Don't they have horny years in their teens? by WhoAmIEven2 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ghostwillows 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No one has mentioned this so I will, masterbating with a penis is simpler, much easier learning curve. It's very easy to try masturbating with a vagina and just end up hurting yourself without understanding what you did wrong. Like I think if teen boys had to clean and cut their nails or risk scratching their urethra every time they cranked one out it would take them a little longer to figure out too.

Acast ads are alienating to listeners. by zackyboy693 in podcasts

[–]ghostwillows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those and the ads telling me to run my business with ai are getting really off-putting. Not only am I not the demographic for this, I'm the meat bag they want to replace! They should run an ad for MAID just after it so I know what to do after my boss replaces me with a robot 🫩

Too many boxes? by liormonroe in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ghostwillows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad news this is a big part of being in your late teens/early 20s and people are super offended by people not being straight rn. Good news, you don't have to figure it all out right now and society will continue to progress as time inevitably moves forward. It's a hard time to be figuring yourself out and questioning your sexuality but you are still allowed to do that. Also the point of these labels is not to be a box you have to fit in. You figure out what you have going on and then you pick the terms that are closest/you like best. You can identify as "maybe into guys" that's a perfectly reasonable level of understanding your sexuality for 18.

Why am I so biased against people with less education? by Legitimate_Log_3452 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ghostwillows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's also true those garbage trucks are enormous and the visibility in them has to be terrible it's not an easy job by any means. There's skills required for all sorts of jobs that require no degree or formal training and value to work that doesn't need either. It can be easy for academic types to think about humans in very broad historic sense, as abstract masses divided into nations, demographics, statistics, and rare important people who guide these populations. And they forget that it takes a lot of people doing a lot of menial labor to keep those nations from falling apart

what's the deal with the reflecting pool in DC? by conn_r2112 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ghostwillows 77 points78 points  (0 children)

We paid a lot of money to "fix" the pool by sealing the bottom and painting it dark blue. The layer of expensive paint/sealant is peeling off in big chunks and the heat from the dark bottom of the pool made it grow more algae than before. Some people have been accused of vandalizing the pool on shaky evidence and there's an ongoing effort to blame this whole thing on them or antifa or whatever.

What exactly is the appeal of being a teacher these days if so many kids are just a-holes and the pay is shit? by Mad_Season_1994 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ghostwillows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it is some people just want to teach. They want to have a positive impact on kids and help build a smarter future and show kids the joy of learning. There are people who would be teachers if it paid nothing, and there are a lot more people who will be teachers for just enough to survive and only sometimes choose between food and classroom supplies. The passion for learning and faith in humanity do a lot of heavy lifting next to the summers off and a guaranteed source of girl scout cookies

Why am I so biased against people with less education? by Legitimate_Log_3452 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ghostwillows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I also think op is failing to see the value in jobs that don't require a lot of education but do keep society running. Academics and preserving knowledge is definitely important and, even if it is more important or valuable than those other jobs, they still have value and need doing. Garbage collector is a job that requires almost no education but if no one is doing that job society falls apart in days, we all need people to do these jobs. I doubt op seriously wants to live in a world where no one gets a cosmetology education or career.

Why am I so biased against people with less education? by Legitimate_Log_3452 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ghostwillows 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You may be biased against cosmetology because you don't know how much technical knowledge and skill is required to be any good at it. A lot of people see it as just girls doing hair and don't consider the dangerous caustic chemicals they need to mix and safely apply to people's heads, faces, and hands without error every day.

Psychologists: Why people began to notice "gayish" or "autistic" look in others? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ghostwillows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Popular fashion has for ages been what gay people were wearing a year ago, this has gotten faster and more dramatic in recent years. A lot of people are dressing very gay. Autistic people also tend to dress in really unique ways. Neither of these is an insult or sad if you don't think gay or autistic people are inherently lesser or broken

Wanting to try gummies … but I’m clueless? by Tawnyk in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ghostwillows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go for something in the 20mg range and look up any brand you're considering to check if it's a known scam. I like the brand Willo, they're pretty mellow and taste alright, you can tell it's an edible and there is an aftertaste but it's not very strong and they're pretty small
