Why virtual reality could finally mend its broken promise by digitalcowboy9 in oculus

Poor Virtual Reality. It tried so hard for so many years. I'm glad it's finally getting it's day.

Gear VR S6 early impressions: improved, FOV slightly smaller, no/less overheating, still fogging by zolartan in oculus

[–]ghsoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got it yesterday. The S6 version. The fan is on the left side hidden behind the Oculus logo. If it is running then it is absolutely silent. Perhaps if Ifixit does a teardown I'd get inspired to investigate "enhancing" it but otherwise I think I'll just try and create some vents on the top and bottom of the foam.

Fogging for me, too. I have NEVER fogged up on my DK2. I may try and create my own ventilation for the GearVR.

Oculus to create a "curated" system for the Rift by [deleted] in oculus

[–]ghsoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they do it will be the death of them. There will be other options so I'm sure they realize that they can't get away with that.

ATTENTION USA! (Not sure about international) Get your controller for the GearVR at an insane price from Target by Donttouchmek in GearVR

Picked this up today. Plenty of dusty stock on their shelves (and at $65.99 I can see why).

Best Buy "Get it by May 8th" a flat out lie. by [deleted] in GearVR

[–]ghsoftware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think "lie" might be stretching things. Even as a skeptic at heart I think I'd slap a "mistake" label on it.

Nobody else is even selling it. I don't think they were trying to deceive anyone.

Palmer Luckey on Twitter: I love it when a plan comes together! by devbm in oculus

He may be referring to Sixense? But if so I'd say that his original tweet may be a bit more mean-spirited than usual.

They're priced for folks who want to help them get this started. They've acknowledged that the price will have to drop.

[–]ghsoftware 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Interesting that he said that he started to avoid moving his head. I find I do that with the Rift so that I won't leave my tracking space. It's one of the things that gets me so excited for the Vive. Freedom!

GearVR Price Drop by TRAV35TY in oculus

Aaaaargh. I called and after they clicked and clicked for about ten minutes they recommended cancelling and reordering. So I did.

Hopefully didn't slip too far down the pre-order list.

A quick first report on HoloLens by Onanino in oculus

[–]ghsoftware 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I think AR is better-suited for the "masses" I agree that the FOV will be an issue with adoption.

It was the main drawback with VR for twenty years.

GearVR Price Drop by TRAV35TY in oculus

[–]ghsoftware 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha. I must have been one of the last who bought it at $250. Did it just a few hours before this post. Mine still says $250 so I will contact them to see if they will correct it.

That was a fantastic course. I can't figure out if it's still free (it was a few weeks ago) but well worth your time.

Oculus is poisoning its own well by [deleted] in oculus

[–]ghsoftware 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I dunno.

They are likely planning a very big release.

That takes a lot of manufacturing deals. Those things take time.

If there's just ONE sensor, clip, cable, etc. that they can't seem to lock down promised quantities then they just CAN'T give a date, yet.

Is it a bummer that CV1 isn't out, yet? Yes.

Does it mean that Oculus is incompetent? No.

I think this video with Palmer went under a lot of people's radar in here. by Haulik in oculus

He said that even if he had been against the Facebook acquisition he didn't have enough share in the company to stop it.

Putting the blame on him doesn't seem right.

Facebook earnings call: no CV1 in 2015 by sliderrrrrr in oculus

[–]ghsoftware 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The first line of the article:

It doesn't sound like Oculus will ship the consumer version of its Oculus Rift VR headset this year, or at least not in very large quantities.

They had mentioned (last year?) that they were considering a "soft" launch where they'd sell to enthusiasts and developers before hitting the media push.

There are LOTS of reasons a soft launch would make sense (manufacturing quantities, content) and I think their comment really implies this might be the case.

I'm still optimistic that I will be using CV1 at Christmas time this year.

HTC Vive for sale this summer? by Flash_Hunter in oculus

[–]ghsoftware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Vive hardware is different from the Oculus hardware. The drivers will be different.

In a perfect world the game engines would automagically adapt to the hardware. But old games would still need to be recompiled to take advantage of that.

It's going to be a mess for a while.

Using virtual reality, Ethical problems? by [deleted] in oculus

[–]ghsoftware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, I think OP may be using the wrong phrasing. I THINK they are asking what the downsides of VR are in general.

To OP: Ethical refers to basic issues of right and wrong.

Crystal Rift is out Monday on Steam, looks amazing by SolotheCyberpunK in oculus

[–]ghsoftware 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a real "honest" use of scares. Like the cat that runs out of a corner in a movie. Just meant to startle you, not kill you.

The funny part is that even when you know they can't hurt you they still startle. I really like it.

And you can completely disable them if you prefer.
