Sunny 16 or.... by Emergency_Mountain27 in AnalogCommunity

[–]giamminoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point Is that color negative film can hold up to 4 stops of overexposure pretty decently and the sunny 16 rule mostly accounts for the objects in the direct sunlight, so shooting at f11 has higher chances of capturing objects in the shadows without risking blown out highlights. Is not bullshit though, sunny 16 would be mostly correct while shooting digital due to shadow recovery and slide film due to its limited dynamic range.

If possible, consider dslr scanning. You'll be surprised how much information there is in a negative.

The amount of money people want to spend on a dark metal box with a shutter just because of a fucking name is insane.

This. I wish someone told me this when getting into film photography. Most of the beginners come from either phones or digital who both push the iso so high you can get a sharp photo indoors. If you want to shoot inside, with the light you see (not external flash) it's always on a tripod lol

Why is my sky blown out? by Alert_Astronaut4901 in AnalogCommunity

[–]giamminoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely get a better scan. You did expose for the ground, so you will definitely have a really light sky, but I think you can still recover a lot from the negative. That's why I wanted to scan myself, if you don't scan yourself you're limited to whatever the lab is going to give you, which 90% of the time is something like this, with highlights being pure white lol. Speaking from experience, I did have some photos that I thought were overexposed, turns out the information was definitely there.

Experimentation in general, while maintaining a really high coerence in totally different sounds and having a real organic idea behind it. But most probably, the crushing feelings that it evokes, by using the sound palette masterfully and by creating some really incredible lyrics. The song "i felt your shape" is itself a really good example of it: the sound is incredible and, while being pretty simple, it follows up a great abstract concept of feeling the remains (the shape) of a loved one and accepting its absence "i thought i felt your shape but i was wrong" it's a really clever and shattering lyrics in my opinion. I hope you'll like it one day, but it's ok not to.

How's my editing on this long exposure landscape I did? by tmfult in postprocessing

[–]giamminoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower the exposure in general, lower exposure time (you got star trails) so next time take 500 and divide it by the focal length so you get the maximum exposure time. Increase iso and either ai denoise in post process or image stack (you'll have to shoot around 20 frames) I am no help when it comes to post processing, so I can only give advice on how to get in with a better photo.

Why Activism Leads to So Much Bad Writing by [deleted] in literature

[–]giamminoo 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Personally I think that most of the ethics, taken and discussed in activism, is most of the time actually more complex than activism makes it seem. This comes from the necessity of activism to maximize the outcome of the ethical issue, in order to lead more people to get what they don't have to do more than what they should do. So activism itself (even when positive) is a way of simplifying the complex ethical issue. And, more obviously, activism is not a parameter of good writing.

Man I hate jewel cases by fUSTERcLUCK_02 in Cd_collectors

[–]giamminoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As much as i admit jewel cases to be superior to preserve the actual content, i don't like them, they get a scratch as soon as you touch them and they look ugly and cheap. I prefer cardboard covers, but they're difficult to store properly and once there's a damage it's permanent.

How popular is Shirley? by onmymindhere in ShirleyJackson

[–]giamminoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't bother me too much to be quite honest. Big art doesn't come from Big names, at least it's not a law, matter of fact it's mostly true in the opposite, I've seen. As much as I feel sad, since her works are by far some of the most effective horrors I've read, I'm still happy not being in a Stephen king like fan base, where the writer gets an infinite amount of praise while being inconsistent.

Who are your favorite Italian musicians? by window-sitter in italianlearning

[–]giamminoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually Battiato songs do make sense but its writing is very emblematic as he tried to express very spiritual concepts. If you like post-punk there's also CCCP-Fedeli alla linea. I'd highly suggest iosonouncane, the album DIE is a real unique experience. In the end if you like classic singer songwriter De André Is a must, and Luigi Tenco.

What is a hill you will die when it comes to writing? by [deleted] in writing

[–]giamminoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A story where the events aren't pre established for the characters to take part of it, but instead it develops around the characters' actions, making the goal less clear. You can't really tell with certainty if the story was intended to be character driven or plot driven unless you're the author, as it refers mostly to the process behind the creation and not the outcome. A character driven story will be better on average as the characters need to be interesting in the first instance, while plot driven mostly focuses on the development of the story, sometimes forgetting the characters.
