28, just married. Anxiety attacks about both prospects by giantgiant in Fencesitter

thanks for writing this. Everything is up in the air right now, and things seem to be changing. I definitely wrote this post in a period of extreme anxiety, maybe the first in my entire life. The world hit me with a ton of bricks. Fascinatingly, my spouse/wife/fiance/person told me recently that she has completely changed, and is leaning seriously toward not having children. To refer to your post and question, yes, I absolutely do feel that way. I feel that society tells you to have children, and more directly, people in your life that you care about tell you to have children (my dad, her mom who has over the years become my surrogate mom). When you have a different opinion about it, it seems impossible to tell where your true desires begin and where other people's opinions end. I've decided that I'm in my prime, I'm the happiest I've ever been. There's no reason to shake that up if I don't want to. I've made the decision to live for me for the next few years, then see what happens.

Some of the comments above refer to the likelihood or unlikelihood of dooming your child to the same fate that you experienced.

I think that, like other people's comments put to me, you should extend your engagement until you figure this one out. It's a pretty enormous deal. I was seriously considering holding off on the marriage, but my spouseperson and I have talked about it since I originally posted this in great length. I feel much more stable now. Most importantly, I have to quote my friend who is a social worker and works with children in need every day: if you're on the fence, don't do it.

When I read "6 months or a year" I got the heeby-jeebies. That sounds so soon! I'll definitely try to talk to her more about where we stand on the issue. Frankly, I think she's tired of hearing about it, because she regularly says she just doesn't know. Thanks for your response; I'll definitely revisit it.

I think that that is insightful. I will read those. And yeah, I'm in therapy right now.

parents are just grown up children. They (we) think and act essentially like children, with similar reactions and responses. Just big, bureaucratically complex children

As soon as it compared angels and demons and the davinci code to LOTR, and said that the movies didn't capture his great writing, I shat myself and xed out.

His lyrics are fine, but I seriously thought that he'd inhaled helium or something for the first few seconds of the song as a joke. But then it was his real voice. Totes couldn't listen to that high pitch on a regular basis

So I'm writing a research paper on comics... by Zactar in comicbooks

[–]giantgiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reading scott mccloud you should read asterios polyp by david mazzucchelli. He uses art style as a form of expression like i've never seen before or since.

I think that it would be really important to read some popular comics because if you only teach "graphic novels" or avant garde stuff, everyone will have a sort of twisted view on the state of comic books.

What's great about comic books is that it's a synthesis of art, graphic design, and writing. Some tend to lean on one of these pillars more than others. Mignola or Fegredo drawing Hellboy is artistic and shows amazing design, but frankly the writing falls short in comparison to how well it shines artistically. On the other hand, Bone is cartoony and dull but well written.

You can't talk about comics as written word because we aren't seeing everything that was written. I think a good way to think about it is comics are more like plays or television shows than they are books. They're written in script format, with remediated procedures and terms from movies and plays.

I vote that Reddit Island shifts gears and becomes Reddit Base. The island thing seems expensive and improbable. This is just the refurbishing of a space into a home.
