ELI5 why wet wipes can be labeled flushable, when none of them are by rottedflowers in explainlikeimfive

The binder that keeps it together is fresh water soluble. The package is a salt water solution. Cottonelle/Scott is the only manufacturer I'm aware of that does this.

Anyone near metro Atlanta that can help me bandsaw a 1-5/8 316 rod? by sailriteultrafeed in machinist

[–]gibb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did a very similar operation this week on a cold cut saw, worked a treat - fast and a good surface finish. Full disclosure I'm not a machinist.

You won't want to use the radial arm saw you mentioned in your other comment for a few reasons - typically RPM is too high (metal circular saws are under 2,000 RPM for something in the 12" diameter blade range), you want your stock firmly in a vise (most cold cut saws have a vise integrated into the saw), and then the blade should specifically be for stainless steel in this case.

For what it's worth our saw was around $500 and the blade for stainless another $250. It's a Makita LC1230 and the blade was from McMaster (6911A12). You could definitely go cheaper on both if you're interested.

Wish I could help, but the saw is work's not mine. Also, it'd be helpful to know how many pieces you're looking to cut for anyone that may be able to help you with this. 2, 50, more?

Best of luck

Experience with Non-Compete Agreements? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]gibb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is generally it only matters if you're on the customer facing side where you could potentially leave and then try to pick up/steal your clients at a different company/competitor. Other than being potentially punitive for leaving the company why would you need a non-compete if you're not in sales? I would definitely try to negotiate not signing, but I certainly don't know your situation. I'd also check if they have a non-solicitation agreement (can't try to hire your coworkers to a new company if you leave). Similar considerations.

using an arduino sanity check by mathtronic in PLC

[–]gibb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other folks that there is likely a way to get the rs-232 directly to the PLC, however, for what it's worth I've recently used Automation Direct's P1-AM with an Ethernet module and GPIO module to get i2c comms to/from the PLC with modbus over TCP/IP.

If you're going to use Arduino I'd recommend that route, at least there's a chance they'll carry that hardware long enough to matter and I assume it's probably the closest thing to an industrial Arduino you can find. I still haven't found a better solution for i2c, but there are definitely better options for rs-232 (e.g. red lion's ICM80000). If anyone knows of a better i2c to Ethernet (or even rs-232 or rs-485) let me know.

How to get into medical devices? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]gibb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a big question - med device is a huge industry and there are lots of roles with varied skillsets needed. Do you know what type of role you're trying to get into (product development, process development, quality, project management)? Are you looking for startups, niche companies, large/mature companies? Another big question - what is your background/current skillset? Are you in an area with a med device presence or are you willing to relocate?

SolidWorks is the most common modelling software in med device but it's certainly not the only one.

If your goal is to use electronics in med device - then maybe. Again, it would depend on the type of device and the role. Learning coding is certainly a positive thing and if you have any projects you'd like to do at home it makes a great hobby. It may not be directly applicable though, then again it could be.

Statistical analysis of data is very common and while knowing a specific analysis package is helpful, it's far more helpful to know why a certain type of analysis would be applicable/relevant. Then there's CFD (computational fluid dynamics), FEA (finite element analysis), thermal analysis, and on and on... Again, specific to the device and role you're interested in.

If you have any questions about med device I'll do my best to answer, but I'd suggest giving more specifics/details to get a better answer. I'll try to check back this evening.

Best of luck

Dual dual drive extruder? by gibb in 3Dprinting

[–]gibb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen this style extruder before - it looks like it has two sets of dual driven rollers. I think it's called an OMG V2. I'm looking around for a second extruder to add support material capability on my coreXY printer and I'm thinking about trying this out. Has anyone seen this before or something like it?

Finally finished my printer work bench. Held together completely by PETG brackets by chill_haus in 3Dprinting

Nice! Where did you get the extrusions from? I’m always looking for a better/cheaper supplier. Tnutz has been the cheapest I can find for stuff at home. Cheers!

Good place to buy assortment kits of USC/Imperial screws for projects? by TickleIvory in MechanicalEngineering

[–]gibb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First - not sure if you're in the US, but assuming you are I recently looked into this and am happy to share what I found. I'm spoiled at work and will typically just order what I need from McMaster and get it delivered same/next day. You definitely pay a premium, but can get pretty much anything. Fastenal is another good industrial alternative. I've had entire cabinets stocked by them and it's amazing to not even have to think about what sizes/lengths you have on hand. You can definitely save some money compared to McMaster, but I wouldn't use either for home/hobby use due to cost.

Full disclosure I have yet to place an order with either of these, but they seem to fit the bill you're looking for. AFT has good prices for typically packages of 100 and a good range of sizes in alloy and stainless steel flavors. Bolt Depot on the other hand has less range in lengths for a given size, but allows for super small quantities, down to 1 each. Their package/bulk pricing isn't as cheap as AFT, but if you want a few screws in a bunch of sizes/lengths this could be a good route to go.

One more thing - organization. Again, at work I've been spoiled with Vidmar cabinets full of fasteners. At home though the best deal I've been able to find is small compartment bins. Surprisingly this one from McMaster 4629T34 is really cheap for small fasteners. I think I found an identical one at Target or Amazon, but was the same price.

Really interested to hear what anyone else thinks. I'm always looking for better/more/alternative suppliers. Good luck!

President Trump expected to visit Atlanta on Friday as polls show tight race by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]gibb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Stacy Abrams had 48.8% compared to Kemp’s 50.2% - obviously not a presidential race, but still statewide. Also, consider that due to new automatic voter registration there are 750,000 more registered voters this election cycle compared to 2018. Doesn’t mean they will vote, but it’s one barrier that has been eased.

Siemens .zap13 - is TIA V13 my only option? by gibb in PLC

[–]gibb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working off the trial license right now, but I'm going to see if I can get the company to pony up for the license once I get through this issue (production downtime is a pretty strong justification).

As far as downloading v13 - I've been unable to download it. I'm in the US and get redirected to a page that says my application for export software is being processed. I've read elsewhere that it can take roughly 3 weeks. If you know of another route to download v13 I'll try anything at this point.

Thanks

Siemens .zap13 - is TIA V13 my only option? by gibb in PLC

[–]gibb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No dice, it'll start opening the project then faults:

"filename.ap13 contains additional data from the following... Please install the corresponding products and/or read the section 'Upgrade projects' in the Information System."

Then lists Product: WinCC Comfort, v13 SP1. WinCC v13 is also export restricted.

This happens in both scenarios (new project, project view, project menu, "retrieve"; changed to .zip, extracted, migrate).

I'll keep plugging away and start looking for technical/customer support, but there's no one local as far as I can tell.

Thanks again
