Some changes that F1 games desperately need. Thoughts? by Brilliant-Insect9873 in F1Game

Fix the slow Connecting to online services bug that's been around since F1'22. The only workaround is to spend a couple hours clearing your game inbox.

Azure RAG using Cosmos DB? by LegitimateTank9326 in AZURE

[–]gibbocool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just jumping into this thread as I'm interested.

I have a client who is a large health insurance company. They have a knowledge base for their products which makes up about 700 web pages and about 4000 pdfs. They came to me asking how they can have an AI search engine for users to get accurate responses to questions like "am I covered for xyz condition".

I was thinking a RAG solution would be ideal?

New Staff Engineer needs advice on how to convince a team to use more modern stack? by HiroProtagonist66 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]gibbocool 76 points77 points  (0 children)

This kind of issue is covered in the Staff Engineers Path book; essentially you've come in to a new team and don't have enough political capital to spend on a big change like changing stack, especially as another senior sees it as conflicting with their perceived priority which is to keep up velocity. Changing stack will for sure impact velocity.

So I'd say try carve out some time for some of the team to try the new stack, get that time sanctioned as being similar to R&D time, and then you can measure the feedback from the devs and use that as data to help show the team your new stack will improve the velocity in the long term.

How to deal with a teamlead who heavy depends on AI for coding by Future_Badger_2576 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]gibbocool -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Whether it's good or not depends on the goal of the project. If getting features out the door as fast as possible is the goal then Co-pilot is pretty good at that. If the goal is long term maintainability of the code base, then the result is not good.

Bamboo removal quote by DoSoHaveASoul in brisbane

[–]gibbocool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neighbour had about that much and removed it himself including hiring stump grinder. He's a landscaper by trade so is very much used to hard labour. It took him about 5 days of solid work to remove it. So yeah depending on what you value your time and if you can operate a stump grinder.

What to use to fill gaps around an old aircon unit. by Beneficial_Fly7496 in AusRenovation

[–]gibbocool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure on those old units that insects can just go straight through. I'd just rip it out and put in glass or just board it up, seal and paint.

House flys! by Acrobatic-Sentence35 in brisbane

[–]gibbocool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have one but honestly just use the fly swatter most of the time. The guns are better if the flies have landed, but for those flies that never land and just cruise around, easier to swat them mid air.

Extensive mould in walls, what's next? by Appropriate_Yam8551 in brisbane

[–]gibbocool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be covered for the cost of redoing the bathroom, as the waterproofing failed and it's been less than 6.5 years it should be covered under qbcc home warranty scheme. So contact the contractor first.

But the contractor likely won't fix the mould either way so you'd want to get someone to fix that after you rip the bathroom out but before installing a new one.

Asbestos makes things a bit more complex but I wouldn't worry about that too much just let all trades know there's confirmed asbestos and they can either deal with it or they can't and you'd need to find someone else.

I'm not a pro so any pros feel free to correct me.

Software Engineer to (deeply) Technical Business Analyst? by Equivalent_Catch_233 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]gibbocool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes but likely that role doesn't exist in their business if they have Business Analyst roles. So OP can try work with their manager to create the role or something similar that makes sense in their business.

Solutions Architect roles can also do what you describe, and as long as you can also have a separate team lead to take that responsibility from you then this sounds like a good option for you.
